Hi, just found this and had the same problem! I have a 1988 Marinette Fly bridge with Hynautic H50 steering up and down. Upper helm was leaking at seal shaft and found it was messed up like your when removed. Ordered the repair kit and did exactly the same thing you did and fixed the problem! I only had to bleed the system one time like you did and everything works great. Thank you for posting this repair help video!

Good job. I'm a marine mechanic and you did great especially putting oil in the top half. If you didn't do that there's a good chance you would've had to take it apart again to get the air out. The ball bearings are cams that push the valves (pistons) down which in turn pumps the oil to turn the rudder. Be very careful not to get any dirt whatsoever in the system. Use a new oil sorb pad to work on and don't cheap out by using the old oil use new oil for everything including wetting the o-rings. It isn't worth the risk of contaminating the system. Happy fishing.

thanks for your reply, i just did this rebuild. And it din't work. but i didn't fill the top hat with oil. Any more advice you have? would love to hear

@@andrestagliaferro5778 by didn't work do you mean it's still leaking? If so you might have a bad spot on the shaft or housing side of the seal. Maybe even dirt or corrosion. If the shaft has a groove warn in it it can leak as well. If any of those things are present then rrplace the helm. If not clean everything really good and put it back together checking for nicks in the orings.

Mine leaks from the lines that you bleed from, used line wrench but I loose my oil and pressure over time, should I use Teflon tape to help lubricate the threads to get it tighter?

    • @jacksmith3097
      @jacksmith3097 Рік тому +1

@Captain krunch the only place you would use Teflon tape is on pipe fittings. If it is a flare fitting you, they make special sealing rings to go between the male and female flare. Compression fittings would require a new ferrell. If I absolutely had to use a sealant, I would use a paste style, not a tape. I would definitely use tape on a pipe thread, though.

@jacksmith3097 your right, I had read somewhere that you can use the Teflon for lubrication of threads but not for sealing compression fittings, ty.

John Clunan thanks for the complement, that was a "learn as you go project"...lol, so I probably could have shortened the video but I didn't want to waste a lot of time editing. I replaced all the seals on my 18' center console including the steering cylinders on the outboard also did the hydraulic lift seals, I wish I would have recorded all that as well.
I'm going to record all my repairs in the future I think.
what kind of boat do you have? I'm on boat number 9 getting to jump over to sails for number 10.
      Thanks again!

      Hi David
I bought a 38' Egg Harbor, my first boat - won't be the last stupid thing I've done. Has been owned by same family for 30 yrs and marina has taken care of all repairs. Boat I was originally told has been out of water for a year but may be closer to 3 yrs.
You made the repair look easy and I look forward to learning more.
      Thanks again
      John

Egg Harbor, great chioce! That's a top of the line boat, I wasn't expecting that..lol What year?
I met a guy 2 or 3 years ago at put-n-bay who was selling his 38 egg (actually he had two eggs for sale) and had bought a sail boat in the keys (never sailed before) and was headed down for the winter to cruise the Caribbean.
We had a 1985 41' Egg with the full teak package. one of my favorite boats!

Just lost my steering last 3 days ago on the way back to my harbor. I plan to repair the leak behind the wheel. I like your demonstration video very much. However, I did not see on the video if you put back the snap ring before assembling the rotary piston housing.

It turned out that it didn't need to be removed. The shaft can be pushed through the back of the unit by hand, with a little bit of force. This doesn't damage anything.

Unnecessary to remove lock ring from shaft. Shaft pushes out from stern to bow. Use a 15/16 socket to drive seals on
