  • Bluefish Limit - REBEL JUMPIN' MINNOW / SPOOK - Light Spinning Tackle Tailor Fun - When the blue fishing is hot you can cash in your chips, or you can double down with the light tackle. I doubled down with some spin fishing tackle for the bluefish. I had a hunch the fishing would not be hot but present and a honest fish. It was. Win one. Loaded up with some light tackle and lures in the Plano 3600. Some 3 to 5 inch minnows, .5 to 1 ounce tins and bucktails, and of course some topwater lures. The surface poppers been so good to me this year it was my first grab. I picked out the Rebel jumpin' minnow. Win two. I call them spooks like the zara spook. I used them all the time for the bass in freshwater. I have a tray of spooks at home but my buddy Billy Bucktails from Staten Island told me I have to give the Rebel jumping minnow a try. That was a few years back. I work on things slow. If you know me, you know this, and you also know it will happen. This was the day to give the Rebel jumpin' minnow a collage try. I noticed the jumpin' Minnow goes tail down more so then the spook with the stock hooks I left on. I was fishing with a light drag so no worries about hooks bending out. The topwater did not disappoint! It worked so well, and just as Billy mentioned sometimes you don't have to do a dang thing with it. The fish will just eat it! One thing i love about the spook style lures is I can hold it in a zone or pod of fish a tad longer then other topwaters. I like that. I also love the action! The tailors felt like slammers on the light tackle! Good fun stuff!

    As always thanks for taking us along with you.
    Memorial Day weekend I was on the Bay side there and caught my 1st Blues on spinning takle from the surf and from the rocks. And hooked up with my 1st lstriped bass.
    I only had 20lb leader on and he snapped me right off. Popped my line clean in half within the 1st minute or 2. Dont think the line was frayed and it wasnt at the knott.
    That was disappointed but it was still a Wonderful Day!
    Thank you!
    Some of your tips and info definitely contributed to helping me have that 1st successfully day in the surf. I'm hooked for life.
    Appreciate the knowledge
    I am feeling the call of my Fly Rod again though. I haven't taken it out since the fall.

      Fabian!!! It is almost as old as me! Billy said its a must try and that we did! Loved it! Gonna work it more. I think I like it better for the salt. Gonna swap some hooks when it gets beat around a bit. Someone was telling me I think Frank Zima that someone using a rebel minnow lost the lip and said oh man now we got a jumping minnow!

    Great action, Jerry. The last few days, I've been fishing with light spinning tackle on my "home turf" back bay spots. It's always been my favorite method, probably due to the fact that I grew up fishing for river smallmouth bass with a Mitchell 300. When I first started fishing salt water, the 300 was the first reel I used. It did the job, and I still take it out to the back bay, occasionally. Looks like you're using a Mitchell 400 in this video. The 400 is a little better suited for the job, with its higher gear ratio. Those older reels are a blast to fish on certain occasions, with favorable conditions; yet I'm happy that more modern options are available. I beat up a few Mitchell 300s in the past, targeting gator bluefish, but thankfully, parts are still available to repair them. Once again, thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Your fishing channel is my favorite one, and I'm looking forward to your next video. Stay well, and I hope to see you out there soon.

      Hi Jeff! I was thinking bout you on your waters reeling em in the back! The light tackle part you mentioned is a bonus for me thank you for filling in the image in my mind. yea thats the 410. I started with the 300 I still use but that extra revolution is a world of a difference on the salt with lures as you know. I doubled the teflon drags one on top and one under the spool so the drag is smooth and reliable. Sometimes that roller scares me though it never turns!!!! But so long I hear it singing I feel ok. Thanks always for your words and I must say I always enjoy reading and hearing in person about your adventures as well! See you soon!

    Very happy to see the blues coming back! It is called fish your way for sure, but I don't get two sets of trebles when you know your casting into bluefish. Easy to swap out for a single hook. tight lines!

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  Рік тому +2

      Interesting point you bring up. Had a lengthy conversation with a good friend about this earlier. Well about hooks in general, but I used this video as an example. My good friend was on a spread good bite using single hooks. The fish did not commit but he landed a few. I asked him if he was using treble hooks. He was not. I said you would have had a few more fish using treble hooks. Yes, you all catch a million bluefish they are easy and bite anything. But that is not the case. Why does it matter? some people fish once a month and want 3 fish to take home. I want a fish to take home. People like choice. a single hook this day would not have caught any fish. I had 7 opportunities and cashed in on 4. One dropped was on sight, the 3 rest were all blind casting into rips. With a single hook I would not have landed one fish. The fish were not thick. The treble hooks were needed for a successful hook up each and every time. do I use single barbless hooks? Hell yes. That will be the next or next next video not sure yet but as to why and when I use single barbless hooks. I still have not kept 1 bluefish as yet using treble hooks. I want one for dinner. hopefully soon. Hooks are all about choice. Hooks are the root of all fishing. Take away the hooks you take away fishing. The killer is fisherman banning fishing. Banning the hook is banning fishing. What ever hook you use to impale a fish in the face and drag it a few hundred feet to your feet should be up to you. The action will always be barbaric no matter what you do to convince yourself it is not so long you choose to use a hook. The root of all fishing.

    • @jjm4643
      @jjm4643 Рік тому +1

      @@FishYourWay Woah! Easy. Not saying you shouldn't use a hook or talking about banning anything. IF you want to release it just makes it quicker and safer. Better for the fish and safer for the fisherman. If you want to keep it, still makes unhooking easier and safer. Pulling 2 sets of trebles out gets hairy. Agree, there are definitely times where you need to use full set of trebles to hook up, no question. Get a hook in your hand while the other one is still attached to a ticked off fish, not fun. As you say, fish your way, If I know blues are thick (hard to tell from a video) I'm not throwing trebles, that was my point. Anyway, nice fish. Tight lines.

    I wonder if youve noticed that the non-functional Mitchell line rollers tend to wear out line rather quickly with higher drag settings and hard running fish? I dont like running line much stronger than 10-12 lbs on mine. Two days ago I got into a crazy pike bite, basically 3 hours of fighting pike in the 36-40" range, and by the end my 10lb Big Game mono was in pretty rough shape.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  Рік тому +1

      YES! 5-6 so I have a little more room to turn it up if I feel its to short. 10lb does well, I have used 15. The line roller does not turn kinda rubs through keeping line helps. But 100% yes bushleague!

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 Рік тому +1

      @@FishYourWay Yeah, I've found that 15lb line wears out rather quickly, under normal freshwater use 10lb is ok for most of a season, I'd imagine bluefish would shorten that lifespan.
