I remember this. I was around 8 years old when this happened while living in Lihue at the time. After that It causes me huge anxiety for the last few years whenever I hear wind blowing.
I remember this shit. I was 11. We were in Kaneohe at the time and we got a lot of damage, but what happened to Kaua'i was surreal. I couldn't imagine going outside.
Great video! I've been in Hawaii my whole life and I find Hawaiian hurricanes to be fascinating. They didn't think Category 4 hurricanes like Iniki could even hit the state - but clearly they can. Great footage!
The Waimea High School gym we were evacuated to had a roof collapse. We had to be relocated to an adjacent building when the eye of the storm was overhead. Then the wind changed direction and all the loose debris was blown back the other way. Coconuts were hitting the metal shutters on the windows like cannon balls. We had to search for food and water for days until we were evacuated. I had taken my parents to Kauai for their 50th wedding anniversary because we had been there for their 25th. I felt so sorry for them. We had to flush toilets with buckets of water we took from the hotel swimming pool in waste paper baskets.
crazy, been to kauai many times, glad I wasnt there during this time, Kauai is such a small island, there really is nowhere to hide, it wrecked the Coco palms. and everythying else in its path.
A major hurricane hitting Hawaii would have made more news here on the mainland if not for Andrew hitting Florida a few weeks earlier. Hawaii tropical storms are rare but one almost hit Hawaii last year and now Douglas is on a path toward the islands!
I was Chief engineer when this baby came roaring through the islands, we hauled a@@ out of of port, found and place on the leeward side of the storm to ride the storm out....what ride.
That's a great example of how the brain works, the truly terrifying and life changing events make an indelible mark on the human brain. Survival depends on your ability to recall potential danger so that if it happens again you can call upon your experience to survive it the next time around.
I spent my birthday under a kindergarten table at Kapaa elementary school, while Iniki destroyed everything outside! Vacation was a bust, until evacuated to Waikiki Outrigger Hotel. 4days and we could leave, but our dear friends on Kauai had to make do without the necessities, like power and telephones....Terrible.
I was seven in Hawaii when this hurricane happened, it was pretty scary at the time but my family was lucky in that event, nothing horrible happened to us.
i was in the sheraton princeville hotel the whole day riding this out. The hotel got flooded, walked back to our condo we rented at sea lodge down the street late at night after it was calming down, lots of damage. Super hot the following day, not a cloud in the sky
Yes, and very hot and humid. I was in Waimea where the eye came through. We evacuated during the eye, then everything that was blown one way was then blown back as the wind switched direction. Building we were in had a roof collapse.
Damn I love hurricanes. Nature is awesome, too bad it has to destroy human lives but that's the nature of the beast. I could only imagine how I'd feel if nature took away my home, it would be devastating. The energy gathered and released by the Earth is truly amazing. Water+heat+wind+Earth's rotation creates something truly unique and rare in the universe.

I can only imagine. It was bad enough on land. Thanks for sharing!
I was 3 when this happened. I can oddly say this was my first memory.

I remember it well! No clouds and no sound but birds. Even the ocean seemed silent.
