- Jason Citron, Discord's CEO, had to visit the supreme court last week... Let's just say he didn't want to go.
But I am not a lawyer, I'm a chronically online Discord user. So you're going to the rundown of important information that normal people actually care about.
But again, as a Discord user, my brain can only compute so much non-Discord stuff. So after that I show you how to fix a bug that ruined my life (in a video game). And like my idol Billy Mays said, but wait, there's more. Discord's shop got stocked with some Chinese new year art (which slaps, good job discord employee/contractor). Top.gg did something. And gee willy baby there's some experiments to talk about.

Honestly, like it’s arguably the platform filled with the most children.
Makes me think roblox doesn't care about the ped0s on their platform as long as they generate revenue 😕😷
I would suspect that Congress subpoenaed the owners of platforms they were familiar with. Despite the incredible popularity of Roblox among young children, and how much it's oriented towards letting them play and making money of the products, a lot of older adults have never heard of it. Children generally don't tell their parents what they're doing in any detail, it's harder to oversee how a child is playing online than how they're playing with physical toys, and a consequence of making a living usually requiring more work is that parents have less attention to spare for their children to start with. And the relevant members of Congress are either parents or people acting on messages they receive from parents. So they're going to focus on the platforms the parents are using over the ones that children are.
The only people who would argue against that are small children who want to feel big XD

KOSA is a horrible bill and probably violates the 1st amendment. Highly recommend everyone reach out to their senators and voice opposition to it.
i have and i also have suggested that instead of this bs they instead create a bill to raise the age limit of children on social media from 13 to 16 and others should suggest this as well. they should also have laws in place for the little liars who pretend to be older. The fact that Jason got pulled into court over "not protecting children" is dumb as all hell. Discord is *mhhm* a 13+ app at minimum, and most servers have an 18+ age requirement.

yeah but the parents don't care, the sites don't care, and the government is under staffed to deal with the massive amount of child grooming online, much of it i might add is happening to US civilians from other countries, which makes the cases way harder to work with.
so if no one cares, and the government won't take the problem seriously enough. than i guess we shall just watched kids get groomed. as someone who has a friend i care dearly for, who got groomed, i can confidently say, child grooming is both much bigger than people think, but also much worse than people think.
It's also his responsibility. You'll notice if you had a functioning brain that since society was concepted we have told parents to look after their children, we even have these crazy things called laws in case they don't.

Parents CAN'T protect their children from the internet, that's why these laws are being passed. It doesn't matter how many kids apps you make when the internet is inherently decentralized and easy to get lost in.

@@RXYSKII Which could've been prevented if his parents checked his online activity. Discord gets around 1 million reports a week they simply can't keep up with all of them. Discord also disabled over 116 thousand accounts regarding child safety concerns in the 4th quarter of 2023. In total they disabled 255,063 accounts and received 12 million reports during those 3 months.

Which is funny, normally I'm a strong advocate for taking a CEO to court for all the bullshit they tend to spill, but this is like, the one time where the CEO is objectively not guilty here. Discord is not an app made for people younger than 13. It shouldn't need to comply by these laws since it's not built for those people. going onto discord when you're younger than 13 is able to be banned. The parents are entirely at fault here, and this is just going to cobra-effect discord into being even shittier than it already is.

KOSA is a huge threat to children who are queer or questioning, and anyone in an abusive home. If you cannot find examples of abuse outside of your own life, you are far less likely to realize it's happening, and if you are questioning and don't have safe resources, you're more likely to end up falling into the wrong circles. first hand experience unfortunately.

Senate Judiciary Committee is not the Supreme Court, nor a federal court. It is a congressional committee who does have the power to issue subpoenas for congressional function, not enforcement of law.

My thing is y should these companies try and make their websites safer and do the jobs the parents should be doing? If parents don't want their kids going on inappropriate websites or platforms then they should watch their kids and do their job as a parent.

COPPA (Children’s Online PRIVACY Protection Act) Prevents and makes selling any type of data, collected info, cookies, app/website trackers, etc to 3rd-party services ILLEGAL, IF said user of application is under 13.
KOSA on the other hand, is relevant to censorship.
KOSA forbids children from seeing anything listed but not limited to: politics, weapons, 18+, related to unstable mental health, medication, and way more.

The American Library Association is against using a filter for child safety because there isn't a filter that exists which is 1. Actually GOOD enough at filtering something basic like NSFW images vs SFW images 2. Open source (corporations who make the filters don't explain what they count as "harmful to kids") 3. Unbiased (what these corporations count as dangerous can vary from blocking everything related to LGBTQIA+ identities, abortions, basic sex ed, ect.)
Democrats want to normalize showing LGBT shit to kids and they want the age of consent lowered. Republicans dont want that shit. This is why parents need to get off their asses and actually parent/monitor what their kids are doing online than fucking relying on the federal government to parent children.

on discord most servers im in are 13+; and child grooming is extremely common on discord. and one of my friends was in a server designed for child grooming, of course she didn't know at the time. she was 13, and when she attempted to leave the server, they showed up at her house, because apart of the server at some point, was to give up your personal information. my friend was an innocent child, she did not know any better.
oh also my 13 year old friend also dated a guy on discord. which went to jail for child grooming, and had CP. but my 13 year old friend never wanted any of this, she just assumed people were kind, and because she assumed people were kind, she was targeted and abused.
grooming on discord and the internet at large, is way bigger than people think it is; and anyone assuming it's not, is just leading to more kids getting abused. a problem can only be solved, when the problem is taken seriously. i see so many comments in this comment section taking this ordeal with the CEO's going to court over child safety on there platforms as a joke.

Honestly this is a hard choice not gonna lie, while i do like the idea of protecting kids from the internet and not having any more ipad kids, i don't like the idea of blocking useful unbiased information on the internet, like information about LGBTQ+ (since the old people keep saying they're groomers and other yapping bs).
And plus isn't this the parents responsibility to make sure their child is safe online, this is one of the reasons why ipad kids exists unfortunately because of the parents not taking care of their children.
