Hey, my first car had a black racing stripe applied via rattlecan that someone had gave up on halfway through the final coat. So it was only faded about halfway down.
When I was 16 I bought an amazon $35 cold air intake for my old dodge ram. Had random holes in it for universal sensors, $5 piece of duck tape later and it sounded like it was about to suck a bird into the intake lol. Now I'm 18 and have a Focus ST and realize what real performance parts are.
@Pretty fly for a WiFi Nice car, have tons of respect for people who maintain older cars, what year is it? The focus st would in all honesty beat it at a track, so don't know what's so funny about a "performance focus", not always about a straight line when it comes to performance.
I've actually had pretty good experience with an eBay intake. Sure it was chrome and all. But the air filter sits in the OEM air box, far and well away from the header. Late winter I put exhaust wrap on my header. Intake temps are just ambient temperature unless the car sits
When talking about spark plugs cold or hot tells you how much heat the plug holds after combustion, low performance engines such as lawn mowers use really hot plugs meaning the heat stays in the plug instead of getting transferred to the engine case. High performance engines have cold plugs cylinder temps are high and the plug tries to move as much heat as possible into the case. Cold and hot does not have any relationship to the heat or intensity of the spark. If a hot plug is put in a high performance engine the internal resistance of the plug can become compromised giving you a much weaker spark. Sorry for the length great video
When i was 19 i bought a brand new Chevy Colorado and put a K&N intake and Flowmaster muffler in it. It took me 5 years to realize what a waste of money it was. Now I own a EK Civic and one of my first mods was going on ebay to find a stock factory intake to replace the crap hot air intake that was on it.
a stock manual civic with good quality tires and new/unworn suspension is about the perfect DD. still fun(dont care what anyone says), handles well, good on gas. cops dont even look twice.
I wouldnt consider ebay my store of choice for quality parts. Its 2020 if they dont have a website i wouldnt touch. Pretty much every reputable performance product ive seen does not sell its parts on ebay
I have a cold air intake but in my defense, I did not have “power” in mind. My mpg was not steady with the stock box, but with the CAI I gained an extra 5 and now it’s steady. And my exhaust sounds a little better :)
Cold air intakes are only good for NA builds, forced induction cars wont benefit from them since they have an intercooler that precools the air already.
Not true lol.. it all depends how good the OEM intake is. NA builds rarley pick up more than 5 hp from a intake and a good tune while something like the Ecoboost mustang picks up in the ballpark of 30 if I recall right. More flow is never bad
I disagree. A cold air intake(boxed off from the main part of the engine bay) is still going to provide gains(not much) but some. Reducing intake temps mean more air is metered by the maf. The colder the air, the more can get jammed into the cylinders so a good CAI is going to reduce the intake temp initially, allowing the intercooler to be more efficient and condensing the airflow. Not ever car is rolling around with a massive Front Mount Intercooler
i have only used a KN airfilter on the stock intake system. cheap but solid upgrade i think.. +2hp consistent on the dyno. if you want some better performance for your car, buy some good sticky tires, some stiffer brake lines and quality suspension system, and you can have some fun on a track day with your family sedan. ( and you also upgrade your car the right way)
I put one of the cheap cold air intakes on my 1994 Chevy Lumina, when I had it. Not gonna lie, it did its job. I got what I wanted out of it. I got more MPG on the highway. Went from 23-24 to 28-29. I definitely didn't gain any performance from it though.
Non car enthusiasts do not understand this I modify my car because I want it my way not some manufacturers way that is super limited and not fixable vs my way everything has a 2nd safety and will pick up on any problems like my air suspension system I have built with bc Coilovers tein edfc and air lift 3H system with 2 air lines going to each bag if any air line fails the 2nd one will pick up where the outher one failed
I’m not gonna lie. Putting the right spark plugs in you car really does help with freeing up a couple hp. And I think the thing with the wires comes from putting things like msd boxes and heavier duty coil packs in so you don’t risk one of the og wires failing.
well to actually put some perspective on the topic of "short ram" intakes. i get the point, ebay is a BAD exmaple of getting a "cheap" intake for your car with cheap metal etc etc. BUT i did my research on my car specifically and found out that having a CAI in MY car specifically poses no difference in terms of power or anything due to my engine being naturally aspirated and with that being said, having just a short ram hooked up to my throttle body is slightly better as my "stock" intake is practically the same thing out of the gate. Just wanted to kind of put something out there. If you're gonna spend money on something, at least have the common decency to do your research on it, and for the record i spent $90-110 on my short ram (NOT FROM EBAY) and it actually works really well (aside form the induction noises) i've noticed slight increase in throttle response and some mpg increase. so for ME, it worked out in my favor :D
Wires can make a difference. If you had the factory wires from 27 years ago. But I got decent quality black wires. And I felt a good but more power (was misfiring before lol)
Some times when you have an option to get the boring old black ones or something In a color you like, you just do. I have blue wires just because they had to be replaced and it was an option. I don't go around being an asshole and popping my hood to show them off though.
The only ways you would ever improve performance from wires is by using a more conductive metal or by increasing the current from the battery to the spark plugs. Which wouldn't really work as there's only so much current required to set off a spark plug in the first place.
Good wires are more dependable, but there is no physical way for wires or plugs to net a HP gain by themselves. To gain power you require more fuel and air, without an increase in both you gain nothing.
I’m still convinced that if you’re going to supercharge your car, you want that cold air intake (not short ram). You want as much air coming in as possible.
I think there was maybe 1 time, the first time, that I bought a short ram intake for my 3000GT non-turbo. Keeping in mind that the original parts really weren't much different, I think the reason it wasn't worth the $150 it cost me, is because a K&N replacement air filter for 30% of that, would have gotten you nearly as close to the same results.
Cold air intakes are useful just not by themselves they need to paired up with a powerful engine or an engine that’s been tuned. Colder air is more dense so it would bring more power to an engine
Yes, a CAI is going to work. But not the ones that you see in the video. Those are NOT sucking in cold air, rather hot air from under the hood. The stock set up is ten times better, even if it is a little more restrictive, since it is not sucking hot air into the engine. What he should have done was made it clear as to which ones actually work. Ones with a large heat shield and/or a box as well as a hole that allows cooler air in from the outside of the engine bay.
@@jmackinjersey1I hate to say it, but I will have to get one eventually. My car is tuned, but I will be coughing up the cash for an intake even longer than the stock one with a huge heat shield that utilizes the stock ram air intake
@@ethanheitz4489 , I would check with the person that performed the flash tune before you do, just to make sure that that particular flash tune will also accommodate the change that the CAI may make.
@@847MicRoss SRI? Stock Ram Intake? As I said, cheap CAI's don't work better than stock intake filters. Especially if it is a simple cone filter stuck on the end of a plastic or metal tube under the hood. There needs to be plumbing and shielding specific to that application/model. And if you are talking about a Stock Ram Intake, those are specially designed to work for that particular model.
I'm in the UK, I see a lot of cars with teddy bears hanging from the bottom, how much bhp does this add? I've seen a 4ft teddy on eBay for £13, bigger the faster yeah? ^^
The bigger the faster, yes. You also have to remember that the bigger teddy bear adds weight, so you'll need to find a teddy bear with a good power to weight ratio after you find what's good for you
@@thesquirrel8214 For FWD cars without any weight an the rear, adding a huge and heavy ass teddy bear to the rear will balance out the front. FWD cars have all the weight at the front and tend to get lift off oversteer, so adding weight to the rear will make it more stable especially under high speed braking!
The best "performance" mods I can think of, particularly for older cars, is proper maintenance. Do the oil changes and tire rotations on time, coolant flushes, transmission fluid change or flush (some debate on which one), etc. Get the car sorted before you start looking at performance parts. I'd add huge rear spoilers and running premium gas in an engine designed for 87 octane to the list of useless mods.

And when I'm working in the garage/shop, I like watching in overhearing similar stuff that I'm interested in, also because I'm not one to keep up with the Kardashians or some made-up reality TV bullshit. Plus it's always good to refresh and or learn new things or tricks, cuz no matter how much experience one may have, we can always learn new things. Because if you already think you know everything then you're an idiot. Regardless, even if you already know these things, such as I already know these things in the video, it is still more entertaining then some made-up drama, and or watching somebody make plans to get their nails or hair done, or order champagne to fill their bathtub. Plus your approach to making this video was a little different than how many others do. Which was a little refreshing.
I one time purchased a leaf blower (electric, 180 mph) and put it into my intake. I don't know if it boosted my Hp as I couldn't drive with it like that, but it made my exhaust smell funny. This was in 2008.

First thing I did when I was 16 was hop on the forums and look for QUALITY USED parts. I could score some really sick old school parts like Tokico shocks and old school JDM intake systems. When looking for parts on a budget, always better to look for used quality parts than new Ebay junk. But beware of hotboi parts, if you want performance, you can't afford hotboi parts, browse wisely kiddos!
@@theleviathan282 Look for brands that are known to be quality and budget friendly to begin with, like Tein and Enkei and things like that. So you can probably grab the lowering springs and struts off the guy for $70 or less since the guy upgraded to fancy Ohlins coilovers for example.
I don’t even have a learner’s permit yet, but I did research and made a wish list of performance mods I’d add to my dream car, which is legit a 1997 Accord
I agree other than the CAI, neither CAI or SRI's make any noticeably power gains. I personally got a SRI because I don't have to worry about water splashing under the bumper, it makes more audible intake noises, easier to clean without taking off bumper, and it saved me like 50 bucks (180 versus 230). Although, I guess it depends on the car. btw love your content keep it up.
I feel like the hate is misinformed. Not everything you do to your car has to add mad gains I just want turbo noises, bruh. But also fitment isn't doing an services saying to avoid them if anything people should avoid CAIs if their car isn't just for track do to neglevgence
@@shanebaronak1625 I have a turbo setup with Water-Methanol Injection so having a CAI doesn't do anything. The turbo is run very aggressivly and turns the air flaming hot anyway. then my intercooler helps to bring those temps down and then the 50% water evaporates to remove some of the heat while the 50% methanol gets combusted and further lowers the heat within the cylinder. I only got it to increase flow to the turbo, not because I care about sucking in cold air. If my car was non-turbo I would definitely not be using a SRI.

One of the best mods you can do to an engine for damn near free is porting and polishing. That of course is assuming you understand how to port and polish and have the tools. It's more common on older cars to have done because there's more improvement to be had with more restrictive and rougher ports. Of course, you aren't looking to increase the size of the ports necessarily, but you're looking to smooth out the transitions in the ports so there's less turbulence. Leave somewhat of a rougher finish on the intake so fuel doesn't puddle on TBI, MPI, or Carb'd setups, but you can put a near mirror finish on the exhaust. Best way to practice is pick up some junk heads that are identical for super cheap and get to cutting.
The funny thing is that dodge neons are easy to modify, every time I modified one all the parts fit, from headers to intakes to exhausts , never had an issue with them tbh.
I didn't have an sxt when I was 16, i had the srt4 with real turbo but my 1st mod was an AEM short ram intake 😆, the induction/blow off noises with the turbo were worth it though
I got a dc sports cold air intake. But after realising how much rain the filter got I removed the l shape aluminum piece out and put my cone filter in the engine bay right behind the fan. Honestly has the same amount of "power" it did. Far better than the plastic closed air intake
spark plugs and spark plug wires upgrades were suppose to compliment nitrous kits. I found a site that sells nitrous kit and they recommend spark plug and spark plug wires to be changed for a normal engine to handle a 50 hp shot of nitrous. the site in question is called Proimporttuners. it's in their Q&A section when you click on a nitrous kit.
Back in 1970 something, a friend of mine had a Mercury Cougar. Someone told him to put in hotter spark plugs for more power. It wasn't too long before they burned holes through the top of the pistons. What a dope! Then couldn't afford to fix the car.
After seeing the difference in the filtration of OEM style intake filters versus most aftermarket media I'm happy to stick with stock intakes for everyday use. Affordable and you can replace them instead of cleaning your old one. If it becomes a restriction then you should consider aftermarket options, but until them I'd stick with OEM style filters. Every car I buy gets some Denso Iridium spark plugs first thing (NGK as a secondary option) if I plan to keep it for any length of time. The new twin tips are pretty nice and the mpg gains will make them pay for themselves. It's just standard maintenance stuff. Best performance mods for people that drive used cars; bushings, motor/transmission mounts, ball joints, tie rods, shocks/struts, gaskets, brakes, etc. It's amazing some of the "built" cars I see running around with some sketchy suspension handling yet have motor work and coilovers. Then go get an alignment by a reputable shop.
While driving cold air enters the front of the car and circulates around the engine bay so there's very little hot air sucked into a cone filter and with increased airflow in air filter throttle response in increased.
I remember how confused I was, when I got 2mpg better with Platinum iridium plugs! Only to find that 4 weeks later getting 4mpg worse than before, that stock style copper plugs were literally the only decent thing to do. I committed the idea that better spark plugs were just going to be better, between service intervals. I was wrong, and wasted a couple bucks to be reminded that there's always more to learn about cars
Man thanks so much for this video , I ordered a short ram air intake like 2 hours ago and just canceled it before wasting 50 dollars on it , Im going to try to be more wise when buying parts next time , thanks once again.
A short ram cold air mod does work. But only if. 1. You heat wrap the tube with thermo tape or some other insulator. 2. The Ram intake cone is in its own insulated box. 3. * You have some kind of vent, scoop (what ever) that feeds the thing from out side air. Thus the reason it would need the moisture barrier sleeve. If your cars hood is notably scoop free and there are no vents in your fender then get the longer tube version and run that bad boy as far away from where the heat comes from as you can. Also heat wrapping alone is cheap and very effective. Even on a stock intake for efficiency reason it will help your intake maintain a more even and cooler temperature which can make the engine run more efficiently. As far as plugs go it should be noted that beside having the correct plugs for your temperature range you also want reliable plugs. Spark plugs them selves will not necessarily change the HP out put of your engine however they can greatly affect combustion efficiency. If you are just daily driving this is not as worry some and simple single or double post standard range plugs will do. But, if you plan on working that engine out like the transporter running from a mob boss then having quad post plugs of the appropriate material type and temperature range can prevent misfires, wasted fuel, and back wash into the throttle body. Alternately putting higher quality plug wires on CAN affect these same performance factors however those pretty color coated cheapo's from auto zone or discount parts . com ain't it and wont do anything of note. In fact they may make things worse for your engine since they are selling you the coating color not the core and many times under that matched skin is the cheapest filament they could use with violating consumer laws. What you want are the shortest plug wires possible with the best quality insulator, and filament material to better transmit the electricity to the plugs. Trust that any one that matters looking at your engine will be more impressed to see quality over visual coordination. I completely agree with the fan thing assessment. unless it happens to be connected to the crank and pull its own air to add to the intake which is to say a super charger. There are a few innovators experimenting with compressed air systems that look very interesting to say the least but none of them are really ready for the larger consumer market, and they do not yet have models for vehicles below what I call the Z line. (Z line: a purpose built sport vehicle such as the Nissan Z which produces 350 or more HP and costs 50k or more) I use the Nissan Z because of all purpose built sport vehicles the Nissan Z can never be anything else with its 2 cubic foot of trunk space and only having 2 seats. Not that the back seats in a corvette, hell cat, or WRX could fit more than a short 3 year old.
I dont call it rice I just call it a car enthusiast that is broke and can't afford real car mods mosty associated with $500 shit boxes and it does not only apply to Japanese cars you can buy a $500 ford focus or a $500 Chrysler 200 or a $500 Chevy cobalt but Japanese cars are the cheapest and will always last longer then any American equivalent car for example 1994 honda civic runs like new with ok maintenance 1995 Toyota corola 1996 Nissan sentra or a 1997 Mazda 626
Short ram with a heat shield works decent. You do get better throttle response in most cars but some cars have them positioned like right above or next to the headers that it performs almost no better. Even the Cold Air intakes get hot. The only way to truly get much colder air is by sticking it thru a headlight or having the filter so low it's nearly scraping the ground. Their really isnt any Cold Air anywhere under the hood of a car. My short ram actually worked fine but I made a custom heat shield for it so it prevents most of the engine heat going directly on it. I was mainly after more throttle response myself which was assured as the stock air box was quite restrictive as is.
I feel like most people already know these things don't add power but they still get em anyway. Nothing wrong with that either since it introduces a lot of folks into modding and it's a learning experience 👌
My brother bought an E-Supercharger way back in the day from a vendor at Nopi Nationals. It was middle to late 1990s. He hooked it up in the lot saying this is some fake bullshit then returned it later that day. We still tease him about it.
Excellent points all around. At the risk of stating the brutally obvious, platforms differ especially when it comes to making power. Just because a given part was beneficial on your last car, it doesn't mean that it will also produce gains on your next car. How would you know which parts you need? Go to the forum. Not a FB group, even though I admin several, but the actual web-based discussion forum. Try not to have a horsepower goal in mind. We can discuss the latter in detail, if you prefer. Let me give a couple examples from the Evolution community. These are the parts needed to uncork the motor: Evo VIII - boost controller, fuel pump, the diverter valve from a IX, turbo back exhaust, a tune, and 272 cams are optional. Evo IX - boost controller, turbo back exhaust, and a tune. A fuel pump may or may not be needed. Say you want to add some pretty intercooler piping. It won't do a thing for power at this level. The upper intercooler pipe doesn't make power in any state of tune. Lower, a little if you're moving a lot more air. How about a VTA BOV? Some folks love the sound, but it will make your Evo run like crap. The point is, the intrecacies of a given platform aren't necessarily apparent without looking deeper. Good luck.
Changing out plugs and using larger compression leads can get a decent power gain provided you upgrade the coil and have half an idea how carb jetting and ignition timing work. Wont help on anything efi but if your running an old car with carby/dizzy system. Cheap hp gains.
I bought a super cheap cold air intake and had it looked at by my mechanic. He thought it was awesome and how it was away from the heat and near the cold wind and was super happy that no codes were being thrown. He was surprised. It was 45 bucks. About a 20hp increase
I purchased roll center adjusters that after looking at the design when they arrived... were just spacers that fit under the nut. They didn't alter the point of rotation in the lower control arm. I noticed immediately after purchasing them that the site took them down. I wish more shops made real roll center adjusters. The suspension works would be a better place.
ZotiyakYT - Even that’s debatable. Anything that isn’t fully enclosed and sucking cold air from outside the car isn’t going to do wonders, even if it technically increases the air flow. You’ve also got to make sure the intake is actually the bottleneck when it comes to air flow. For example, on the EA888 VW/Audi engines (Golf Mk7, S3, etc), the flow through the intake can be as much as you like, but the turbo inlet elbow is the bottleneck. Increasing your intake flow from 400 to 500 cfm isn’t relevant if that stock elbow only flows at 300 cfm.
Biggest thing is getting a tune to go along with them, and most of the time if you actually want to see a noticeable change you pair it with getting your exhaust upgraded. After it’s all said and done you might get 15-35 hp out of that with like a 95 octane tune or something along those lines. At least that’s what I’m looking at with my car, might be different with others. Debatable whether or not it’s worth the money for roughly 20 hp. Intakes and exhaust are mostly just to make your car look and sound better, the hp gain is just a nice little bonus.
I got a Cold air, Header, Cat back exhaust and Light weight Harmonic balancer and you can see the difference between stock to now I just need the Down pipe and Injectors with some different spark plugs then get the adapter for a tune and then this car is done
Short Ram Intakes don't add any noticeable power and in some naturally aspirated engines may even subtract (hot air from the engine bay). Turbocharged engines on the other hand do benefit from SRI due to the increase in air flow, and brathing hot air from the engine bay doesn't change anything because the turbo is already hot as hell and the air then gets cooled by the intercooler anyway. So SRI for Turbos, CAI for naturally aspirated. And on the matter of spark plugs, if you recently reprogramed your ECU or installed a performance chip (like I did with my DS3) you might want to do some reasearch in what sparkplugs better accomodate you new program (RCZ spark plugs in my case)
Every one knows that if you really want your car to perform stickers are the way to go. Skunk2 racing stickers add an additional 5hp to your vehicle while Sparco stickers add 10hp. If you really want to spice things up and you have some serious dough to spend, get a typeR emblem and slap that baby on for an additional 30hp. I have a buddy that got one for his Volkswagon gti and now he's spanking Lambos and Skylines left and right!

@@bergerstorm if you can hear the noise from a cold air intake over a turbo, you should slap a bigger turbo in there lmao
Not true lol.. it all depends how good the OEM intake is. NA builds rarley pick up more than 5 hp from a intake and a good tune while something like the Ecoboost mustang picks up in the ballpark of 30 if I recall right. More flow is never bad
@@turnip5465 Banks Power just did a good explanation of this.
( and you also upgrade your car the right way)

well to actually put some perspective on the topic of "short ram" intakes. i get the point, ebay is a BAD exmaple of getting a "cheap" intake for your car with cheap metal etc etc.

I mean if your wires are fucked, thats more like a repair than a mod
It gives you back lost power that it used to have not "more power" from out of nowhere
Andrey Pokhvalynskiy which is why if you purchase a kit, like a Roush for example, it will come with one.

@@thesquirrel8214 For FWD cars without any weight an the rear, adding a huge and heavy ass teddy bear to the rear will balance out the front.
The difference between growing up wanting to stick stuff on versus growing up in a car family is like two different worlds 😂

Old plugs that are corroded vs brand new plugs definitely add power because of better ignition

If it makes you sleep better, your going to save some money by not replacing your air filter every oil change. It also sounds a bit nicer.
My dyno results from my short ram say this guy is lying. Also, noticeably quicker throttle response.
It helps, but.. people think you gain a lot of HP without a tune and you don’t, but with a good tune it does add a nice amount!
Why not putting an anti-lag on my twin turbo rx-7?
That would make a truly reliable car

These are the parts needed to uncork the motor:
Evo VIII - boost controller, fuel pump, the diverter valve from a IX, turbo back exhaust, a tune, and 272 cams are optional.
Good luck.
Thank you for that deep dive into some knowledge there! 😂

K&N window sticker is nothing but MOA HERRRSE POWAH BABY
I purchased roll center adjusters that after looking at the design when they arrived... were just spacers that fit under the nut. They didn't alter the point of rotation in the lower control arm. I noticed immediately after purchasing them that the site took them down. I wish more shops made real roll center adjusters. The suspension works would be a better place.
Real Cold air intakes make a differens even though its 330 for them
ZotiyakYT - Even that’s debatable.
4:30 TRIGGERED, I have, a 9th gen coupe, j35 and I feel hit😂
Nice 8th gen coupe k24. You got a unicorn if you have yours stick.
I got so lucky this one time i was shopping on ebay for some wheels and found a set of 4 HKS wheels for £35 and they where the best because these where made of of plastic for weight reduction bro yeah man🤘👊
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Me and a mate had a bush basher (Aussie word for $200 car used on a farm and thrashed to shit) and we hooked up a battery powered air compressor to the intake and made some pretty decent hp. Car also still ran after shooting a piston through the block. Gotta love Aussie engineering
I'm guilty of short ramming and super sparking.
Lol...that wig over your eyes was so accurate. After, getting a few higher hp on the dyno with upgraded sparks on my yamaha, i do plan to upgrade the plugs on my car.
You telling me that taking my back seats out doesn’t lose 1,000 pounds????
“Crisp $230 check from fast food” damn bro, you got me
