There are comedic elements, but I wouldnt claasify this as a comedy in any way. Carrey is perfect for this in that he's goofy enough to be realistically someone who people might want to watch day in day out, but he also nails the emotional elements beautifully.

I completely agree with you, this is an in your face drama not comedy.
I think it's a common prejudiced point of view about comedians that they can't play in a drama role or immidiately assume that their film is comedy. Look at Jim Carrey at Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ricky Gervais on After life, Sasha Baron Cohen on The Spy or Robin Williams on Good Will Hunting and much more...
They are all phenomenal in their roles.

Since you’re another one of the ignorant people who’s misinformed about about how he really is, I’ll explain it to you… Carrey is amazingly talented in all aspects. He’s the best comedian who’s ever lived next to Robin Williams and his comedies are amazing. He’s very versatile and plays different characters in all of his movies. Those “faces” that you’re referring to is an incredible talent that no one else has. @@sorasan2466 good, I’m glad you see that he’s a good actor. Because alot of people just dismiss him as “another typical comedian who just plays the same role in all of his movies” which is completely false! I know that most comedians do the samething all time, but that is not Jim Carrey!
While a comedian, he still plays different characters in all of his movies… his versatility shows even more because he’s done dramatic movies too. Robin Williams was the only other comedian who was just as talented and versatile as Carrey

Like Sylvia told Truman about the show almost immediately in their first time alone together, she was never going to "act" for Truman.

This movie has gained a second lease of life in the reaction age; I always find it fascinating to see today's young, media-savvy reactors' take on a subject that, at the time this movie was released, seemed like an absurd exaggeration of the early "Reality TV" shows of the time (bear in mind that 'Big Brother', although conceived a year before this movie, would not premiere in Holland until the year after). Nowadays, the idea of 24-hour streaming a life isn't so far-fetched, and it's more about how fun it is to see the mechanics of what would be necessary to make it work. By the end though, the message is the same: what kind of emotional impact would it have on someone to realize their life isn't what it seems, but to some extent has been manufactured for others' enjoyment? I think that must also hit differently for some reactors too.
Sorry, that got a bit dark. Love re-watching these old classics with you as always Biss 💖

Yeah, it really kinda freaked me out how she *wasn’t* horrified at Truman’s situation and felt like Christof had nothing to apologize for. I almost couldn’t even watch this reaction. What’s wild is that she’s just like the “audience” characters in the movie. She related to those characters, even to the point of feeling moved when he escaped, but she never empathized with the protagonist at all and didn’t even seem to be able to suspend disbelief enough to think of him as a character as opposed to thinking of him as a Jim Carrey role and focusing on Carrey’s performance. I don’t know if it’s a generational thing or whether she’s just a very callous sort of person, but I’ve watched every Truman Show reaction on UA-cam and I really don’t think I’ve ever seen a reactor care so little about Truman. I found the reaction disturbing and unpleasant to watch.

Not even that, there’s some cut scenes that put a lot more depth to the actors and how they feel. Probably forced, or it’s their livelihood now. A cut scene had Truman’s friend spot him on the search for him but he let him climb on the boat and keep ‘looking’ for him.

Eternal Sunshine, well I'm not saying about Jim, he might have been a good actor in it, and I'm sure he was, but I found the movie very boring and the story didn't catch me so... The town looks like a movie set but it is a real place, purposely designed not to need cars. According to Wiki: "The 1998 comedy-drama film, The Truman Show, was filmed in a unique setting-Seaside, a master-planned community in the Florida Panhandle. This quaint town provides a stunning backdrop for many scenes, with its white sand beaches and lush greenery surrounding a medley of colorful shops and homes."
The town was especially on the basis of the "New Urbanism" and has a lot of non-traditional features, like no front lawns, all the buildings have to be different design so it doesn't like a traditional American suburban development of cookie-cutter houses, and only native plants are used. It is a private development so there were no zoning laws they had to overcome.

The actress chosen to play Meryl is sure to have signed a long-term contract committing to do the product placement and all the other things the T.V. show wanted and needed. However, Sylvia's contract as an extra is sure to have been much more limited. And there's no way she'd have agreed to the "recurring cast member" one because she was already an activist against the show who wanted it cancelled and Truman set free. Don't forget what her pin said: "When will it end?"

Ever since I was a child I've loved the moon.
I Live in the UK and I remember once when I was about 8 years old I went to Australia.
Seeing the moon "upside down" was really scary to me. My little child brain couldn't handle seeing something I was so used to seeing and it not being not the same. None of the stars in the sky I was so used to seeing were not there.
A child's brain just can not handle that.
There's something peaceful and soothing about the moon and the stars in the night sky. But when you are on the opposite side of the world the night sky has a whole bunch of different stars and an "upside down" moon. There's no North Star. There's no Orion, There's no Big Dipper/Plough, no Sirrus...

It was before everybody gave their personal data to social medias, before reaction channels on UA-cam and lives on Twitch.
There was also a forgettable movie with Mathew McConaughey, EDtv 1999 from Ron Howard, about same kind of fear.
Jim Carrey was very subtle in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004. There are a lot of good actors. The visuals are unique. The story is great. There is no way, you will not watch that movie. It is too good.
The Majestic and Man on the Moon are also very good movies. But they are completely based on the main role, played by Jim Carrey.
The director of The Truman Show was the director of Dead Poets Society 1989 with Robin Williams, Witness 1985 with Harrison Ford, Fearless 1993 with Jeff Bridges, Master and Commander 2003 with Russell Crowe.

Robin Williams was known for comedy. He wanted to be seen as a serious actor (he’d studied at The Juilliard School). And seeing the success with Peter Weir got him to direct him in “Dead Poet’s Society”.
Jim Carrey, also wanting to be known for more serious roles and following on the previously mentioned, got Peter Weir to direct him in “The Truman Show.”

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't ont mind lengthy outros. It's part of the reaction experience. It's the drawn-out intros where people rehash every every detail of the previous episode that I can do without.

Please check out " Pleasantville "... it's another odd little movie that is really good. Robin Williams was probably one of the more universally liked comedians to switch to acting and had great success. He was a little over the top at times which I believe other comedians took as the recipe for success and each of them tried to be more over the top with their characters like it was a competition, which comes across as way over the top and in your face type acting and humor. I think for me, Will Ferrell also falls into this category. I probably watched this movie 2 or 3 times over the years before I actually liked it and it wasn't for the great acting, but more so for the situations that are created in the movie. Keep up the great work Biss and Happy Thanksgiving !!!

I would say this movie is a Drama with comedic aspects to it. Not all comedy elements and supposed to make you spit your drink out, but to break up the drama at times. I think any "over-acting" the was in the movie was perfectly times. I would think a person in that position, thinking he's losing his mind, would overreact. For those reasons, it's one of my favorite Jim Carry movies along with "The Magestic." But I do love his crazy movies too. Great reaction.

I can't put this movie into comedy genre. There are a lot of psychological things going on in this movie. Starting from how media can alter the reality around you, create a perception that you confuse as reality... to the final scenes were the short attention span of humans is depicted - how easily they forgot about Truman. Also the last line can hint to history repeating itself. There's a lot of symbolism in this movie from 1998 and it's still applicable today in 2024, so we can say the movie was way ahead of its time. Jim Carrey is known for his comedies, yes. In this area, yeah, he is not my type as well. But the serious movies of Jim are very good. And he shows how good of an actor he is. I genuinely recommend other movies from him.

Yeah, it's better to judge this movie as a Drama more than a comedy, I think. And as you are someone who isn't necessarily a Jim Carrey comedy fan, I think that works better for you. He has a few roles where he strays from his typical rubberface comedy, and they are actually some of his best movies, in my opinion.

Jim carreys overacting is intentional here...he is basically on a tv show where everyone around him are actors who respond to him in a heightened way... as the movie goes along he becomes less and less cartoonish in his interactions...ending with his catchphrase being just a normal human response... jim carreys acting is impeccable in this movie.

Why do you need to be told a film is a drama (or whatever genre)? Just watch it and see what it is.
As for the over-the-top moments in this particular film, you're watching someone learn their entire world is not what it seems. The antics in that situation are totally appropriate.

Yes, Carrey exaggerates; that's his whole style of comedy that people love (not really for me.) If you want to see him less exaggerative, watch "23" or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
If he grew up on the show, he should not find it strange that people are advertising products or moving in circles, because that's all he knows. I can even ignore that things are not built despite there being no good reason and that the actors never learned about their fake occupation. However, what really gets to me is that everything went well for decades until everything suddenly started going wrong. I know "when it rains it pours," but that's not about things going right for so long and then a lot of mistakes within a week.

I would consider this a horror comedy myself. He is dialed back from his other choices around this time. Solid performance. I feel the same with Adam Sandler. He is just to much in a lot that he does, but certain films you really get a better understanding how talented he is. Personally I would have ended the movie with him not surviving on the boat and with the ass that created the show being taken away in cuffs.
