Being 44 now and having gone through Wing Chun, Silat, Krav Maga (briefly, they have some good stuff), Kali, and currently Iaido (with a practice wooden katana straight from Japan!), JKD will always be with me. Quick thought about the video -- when adding background music, be careful with vocals. It can make it slightly difficult/confusing hearing music vocals and your manly vocals at the same time. Other than that, you should end every video with perfect Japanese 😉

Ed, it's important to further the art by being as true to the art and its fundamentals and guiding principles When we do that, we must ask ourselves, for example, what did Bruce Lee mean by "All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability"? Did he mean create a new fixed, set pattern and make it an essential part of Jeet Kune Do? The "aliveness" that I'm talking about is the manifestation of Bruce Lee's admonition to "approximate the reality of the situation" in all areas/aspects of your training You're on the right track when towards the end you advise taking the pieces of the form and working them into your sparring (or drilling) because those "pieces" preceded the form's existence in the form of separate drills which never needed (and still don't) to be strung together
Yes, but we can "run to extremes" on that "fixed pattern" fallacy, too. Can we never throw a Jab Cross because it's a fixed pattern? What of shadowboxing the "kickboxing progression"? One form to help beginners learn the basic movements and concepts isn't going to kill the art. It's gonna allow new people to train it. Like the shrimping down the mat for BJJ - or a lock flow from Shooto. It's the same kinda thing. As instructors, I think we tend to forget what it was like as a beginner student - so if we can help them by giving them a drill that they then can discard - it's part of the "hack away the daily inessentials" talk we always hear about. Without clay - how does a sculptor sculp?
@@metrolinamartialarts But there's a huge difference between a 2-count fixed pattern like the jab, cross and say, a 17-count fixed pattern, yes? One has more high percentage probability so it's crazy to discard it as a "fixed pattern", so who would run to an extreme about that? And as instructors, what's all this giving students stuff to later discard? We should instead be giving them foundational stuff upon which they progressively build

Hey, how does that goat restraint stance work out if you sprawl out of lop sao or finger jab into that stance? It's kinda Dodgeball of me to say that, if it'll hold a goat, it'll hold a wrestler boy. But goats and sheep being held for hoof trimming will get you wrecked if you let that hold get weak or sloppy. So maybe the Dodgeball gets this notion right.
