Practically all the mv is a response to criticism, the exaggerated use of the green screen is because many haters said that they always used it and that is not true, so they decided to use a lot of green screen. RM using filters at the beginning of the mv, this is because in a live some people told him that the filters did not fit well. Just like V with the glasses. Also the use of Korean culture, as the antis were saying they were "Americanizing" and losing their Korean essence.
There are many more details like this throughout the mv with the clear intention of silencing the haters and making it clear that hate does not affect them because they will continue to love themselves and know who they are.

I love how it‘s basically the biggest flex and a big f-bomb to the haters. Rm with his filters, v with his glasses, jin with he finding himself handsome (wich we all should do. I mean find ourselves handsome) and jimin with „he‘s to feminin“. And the green screen and music too. They where told they are „to western“ and „not korean enough“. And what did they do. Put all the greenscreen and traditional elements (bunny in the moon, colors, music, dances etc.) they could into it while still saying: this is also part of us and we are true to ourselves and proud of who we are. And it‘s not too much. It‘s exactly right. And a damn fire song and video

i love this mv and this song a lot because it’s basically them mocking everyone that says “kpop mvs are too colorful” then they made the mv a rainbow vomit. “kpop songs are too noisy” and they made idol the noisiest! “they are not artists they are idols” they say they don’t care! i love it.

In a year where BTS was REALLY gaining traction, they released this MV as sort of a parody of how many outsiders view BTS/K-pop MV's and music as a whole: Chaotic, random, overstimulating, colorful etc. Contrasted by the song and lyrics themselves as a "this is what you think we are, then this is what you get" while also saying "idols/artist or whatever you want to call us, we don't care- we're actually just ourselves"
Alright, I have a theory about the plane: ***PLEASE READ, IT WILL BE WORTH IT***
It was first seen in Young Forever, then in fire, then in Idol, then in Dynamite, and it finally landed in Butter. They also have the songs "Airplane" and "Airplane pt. 2".
Young Forever was the epilouge to the HYYH (The most beautiful moments in life) trilogy.
What if in the final scene of Young Forever, (when they're walking on the runway) they never catch the plane (they were seen running after it).
All the music videos it was seen in, it was flying above them, or away from them.
But in Butter, they are next to the plane, the plane has safely landed, and they are all together.
The plane could represent their success and hardships. Since it finally landed, they are safe.
"Got army right behind us when we say so"
You know what else was right behind them the whole time? The plane.

I was already ARMY when this came out... Watched it over and over again... Watched a million reaction and explanation videos... And yet never thought of or noticed nearly everything you pointed out... Once again, thank you for the mind-blowing explanations and interpretations.
your reactions are always so much fun to watch!😊 you didn't ask, but in case someone is curious about the face scene (4:55) that you admitted to not knowing how it's made: i can't say for sure, because i obviously didn't make it, but based on my 3D knowledge i'd assume that the members were 3D scanned (there's a lack of fine/sharp detail in the models and textures which you tend to get in scans). the scans were then cleaned up and made into functional 3D models of the members by rigging them (rigging is essentially giving the 3d model, which is just a shell, a skeleton that you can animate), which is how they have the animated bts avatars in the "fish tank scene". the scene with many faces that you couldn't explain is then just the heads from those models arranged in a 3D software of choice, where they have tracked the camera movement of the real-life footage and applied those same values to the 3D camera in the software. this lets them export vfx footage in layers that matches the movements of the real-life footage perfectly, and can then compose the VFX layers and real life footage together in a compositing software. sorry if i explained it badly. 😅

Jin just got deployed to the front lines of North/ South Korea to serve his mandatory 18 months of Military service. All of them are going into the military right got now. Breaks my heart. I've seen them three times in concert, the 4th was canceled due to covid, and they literally sang at Soldier Field in pouring rain 40° weather in Chicago for 3 hours. That's dedication. That's love. Idol remains being the most iconic video and the only video BTS used so much green screen
fun fact: BTS used to write letters or draw little doodles for their fans in response to fan mail. this was many years ago, I'm not sure if they're still able to keep up with that. I remember seeing a video of Suga tirelessly writing letters, going without sleep or food, on his birthday for his fans. the doodles in the frames may or may not be call backs to their humble beginnings, doing anything for their fans. the fanbase is still their main focus, no matter how big they get.

I got into them through Butter, liked it a bit, then saw dynamite, got really hooked, PTD came and blew my mind, I listened to idol- meh, really god but not my type, and SPRING DAY! duddddeeeeeeeee SPRING WAS FIRE! it had me listening to it on repeat for 3 MONTHS! then suddenly. I saw one of their concert videos and the hype for idol. IDK what got into me, but idol and spring have been on my top favourite BTS songs list (cuz lets be honest, which army dislikes any of their songs right?) ever since.

the reason why its so colorful was because the western industry kept saying theyre too colorful so they laced this vid with a shit ton of colors, they also said they "all looked the same' which is why there's those faces multiplied by a 100. they also called their fashion taste "mediocre" so they wore shirts with glasses and random stuff with. this mv was a slap to their face and they dont even know it
