In 2003, Eminem was nominated for and won an Oscar for Best Soundtrack - "Lose Yourself". It was the first ever hip-hop song to win and he, the first hip-hop artist to win. He was not there, having snubbed the Oscars, so someone else collected the award on his behalf...
Fast-forward...
Eminem finally DID pull a surprise performance for "Lose Yourself" at the Oscars, aka "like that feature" (feature film) when no one knew he was coming, and it was 17 YEARS after Lose Yourself had WON the award ("sorry if I took forever").
But what the hadn't expected was by 2020, technology had changed drastically, everything could be streaming live, and ratings were down exponentially due to the racial discrimination and sexual scandals that dubbed the Oscars "Oscars So White" and Harvey Weinstein scandal, so many tensions and slander ~ people just hadn't been tolerating and viewing. Well, when Eminem popped up unexpectedly to perform, I'm talking the second he hit the stage, due to technology, news hit Twitter and BAM.
Everyone jumped on television, livestreams, whatever. All of the small streaming site crashed and many of the main top news livestreams momentarily crashed, people were going crazy! The Academy decided to rush his performance on UA-cam like they were doing all night ~ so everytime someone won something or performed something, approximately 3-5 minutes later, it'd be uploaded ~ no big deal, right? Well. Lmao. What happened was, after Em performed, the ratings dropped right back down, even lower than before, and that's all anyone was talking about. The majority of the audience, and all the buzz, shot straight over to UA-cam to watch Eminem's performance, and it shot up in views so damn fast so quickly that not only did he "steal the show" but they eventually decided to take down the video!! From what we know, this is the ONLY video that the Academy has taken down for no good reason other than because it hurt their feelings! That is the power of Eminem and what he did, only he can do. He literally broke the Oscars the damn treasured Academy, the holy grail of film, twice, in 17 years.
That is why the line is so epic.

For everyone thinking that the dark figure in the video is Venom, you're kind of missing the gist of the video because it's NOT JUST Venom, it's SHADY. This is why: the gist of the video is that, after Marshall been trying to avoid being Slim Shady, the more malicious, dark, monstrous version of Em all these years, Shady’s (that part of him) finally been reawakened, and throughout the majority of the video, Em’s like, “Oh, no, I don’t want that part of me to exist in me anymore because I almost lost myself as Shady was taking over me.” But in the end, he’s like, “Screw it, if people want Shady back so bad, they’re gonna get him.” That’s why at the end of the first verse of this song, Em says, “You want Shady! You got him!” So, at the end of the video, he finally bonds with him.

The way he pronounces 'carryin' an Oxford dictionary' sounds like 'carrion' ... which harks back to the bird imagery and also the parasite refs earlier in the verse; carrion birds famously only feed on dead things, they're scavengers like vultures, they don't kill things themselves. In contrast to Em, who 'wrote every single word of everything I ever murdered.' Genius, man. Absolutely genius!!

I don't know what Em thinks of Migos, but I don't think the Migos line in this song is a diss against Migos. He is just saying that other rappers are copying Migos' style. Now, maybe Em doesn't like that style, but you can't take that away from that line alone.

I discovered your channel last week and I'm binging your channel since ! English is not my main language and even if I mostly understand the lyrics sometimes I don't get the word play or I don't have all the references. I really enjoy the way you explain things like rythm, lyrics, production, images etc. I think music explaination it's a good way to learn english (I started to learn with Linkin Park and Elton hahaha) because sometimes you can talk about the background of the artist, history, economy etc etc. When I was in middle school, highschool and college we only had teacher who were boring af except one and thanks to her I'm not that bad. Sorry for the long post and thank you for your hard work !
