      why didn't you evacuate?

    • @coachtim6188
      @coachtim6188 3 роки тому +21

@@Mhats Not sure about OP, but for a lot of the people there, evacuation was simply not possible. All public transportation shut down. IF you had a car, to get out of town early enough meant having money for hotels and food. And for a lot that knew they could ride out the winds, who could've known the levees would break covering the city in 20 feet of water. To ride out a hurricane and do just fine is not uncommon. You simply have to be in a place that will withstand the winds and then wait for the surge to recede which normally happens quickly. Since this wasn't just storm surge but an entire river and lake flowing into a bowl, it was under water for weeks.

That is why it was not due to climate change, but rather a man-made issue. It irritates me when the truth is not told until years later.

It was NOT the Corps of Engineers but the NEW ORLEANS LEVEE BOARD which refused authorization and funding for floodgates (locks) to close the openings into Lake Pontchartrain of the outfall canals which for many years have pumped water from the heavy rains out of the city.
The Levee Board was appointed by the Mayor.
This has been quietly replaced by the Southeast Flood Protection Agency. It is appointed by the Governor and a council. At least one member of the 9 must be a civil engineer. A hydrologist and a geologist are also on the board.
The second part of blaming the government instead of city officials is the silence on the fact that Mayor Roy Nagin rejected Amtrak’s offer of a relief train for the residents. In a city with excellent cheap transportation via streetcars and buses. this lack of cars meant more than 1,500 people drowned. while more than 30,000 rushed into the Superdome. No buses were available as the drivers were trying to save their families .
Mayor Nagin flew to Dallas with his family.
When President Bush overrode Governor Blanco’s refusal on the third day, the Guardsmen reported conditions “worse than Beirut.”
Looters had destroyed every store in the Central Business District, even attacking Charity Hospital to get to the drugs.
President George W. Bush was on the phone wirh Governor Kathleen Blanco for three days. He notified her he was sending the aircraft carrier Bataan with helicopters, a hospital and water. He requested permission to send the National Guard. She refused for 3 days while setting up her New Orleans Hurricane Relief Foundation. The officers were Governor Blanco, her husband and their lawyer. Robert Perrot.
Millions poured in from every state and from countries around the world. The foundation is still listed in Newport Beach, Ca.
    The blame game continues.

Not to be a jerk but maybe living in NOLA is not sustainable anymore. Taxpayers spent 14 billion dollars on new pumps and levees. Just read an article from Scientific American, due to subsidence, the levees are sinking and, due to climate change, the waters are rising. The "new" levees will now be ineffective in 2023. Talk about a massive waste of money. If the levees break again do not fix them. It is better to spend that money to relocate citizens.

After Katrina, leaders from New Orleans travelled to the Netherlands per their invitation to learn some valuable info..
As we know, the Netherlands are the best in the world at preventing floods- as their region, just like New Orleans is below sea level.
As a result, the Corp of engineers have implemented much of the same technology that the Dutch have been so successful at.
So now there really is no excuse. The New Orleans levee board need to stay on top of care and maintenance.. otherwise all of that work will be for naught.

They won't... They'd rather spin tales about floodgates and drown you out in procedure and protocols that weren't followed. Mean while (similar to 9/11 and others) ground level witnesses have come out to say different and were hushed up. There def has been a cover up on how Katrina even formed in the first place. This was planned years in advance from the same group think responsible for putting GWB in power imo. The Hegelian Dialectic: Problem - Reaction - Solution
