Austin Dunham just wanna you inspired me to start my calisthenics journey and its been life changing so far. Thank you man🙏🏾 been with you since the at home push up videos. Can’t wait to get on your level of fitness. Thanks for the inspiration AD. Sauce squad for life 💪🏾
Hey Austin I've got a question: If I have scoliosis, where my spine has a sideways curve like an S, do you think handstands will still be a good exercise?
1) have a flexible wrist 2)do bodyline drills 3)shoulders above palms 4)sort out kickup and bring in strong foot when kicking up 5)spread legs oppositely so you can counterbalance
@Dan Don I find it harder to hold the balance with straight legs or as soon as i straighten them. I drop out of balance. But i actually tried with the legs split as counter balance i was able to hold for 10-13 secs. I aint expert but my logic says that it is harder to balance a longer lever. Atleast for us beginners at handstand.
@Dan Don 1 and half year i kinda the first year made that mistake of not using the wall as assistance of teaching my body that position. And only practicing the kick up that was the first mistake i made. But after doing back to wall heel pulls holds and chest to wall toe pulls it kinda helped me in the freestanding balance. It was just pure luck that i was able to hold it for over 3-5 sec. But now it is getting more consistent. I am between the late novice and intermediate stage in terms of learning the handstand. And my weight is 85kg 180cm tall.
Usually people kick with their off-leg; so if you’re right-handed you kick with the left. However, I practice kicking with both legs to avoid imbalances.
As someone who ultimately managed to learn the handstand, but struggled whilst making all of the common mistakes along the way, I can tell you that Austin's tips here are truly what makes the positive difference. Having the correct process actually requires less strength, as you are using the powers of leverage and balance to turn gravity in your favour, rather than fighting against it. This allows you to be much more consistent in your kick-up (as Austin shows), meaning you will learn the balance point more quickly, as you are repatterning the brain correctly each time, rather than having lots of failed attempts. Good luck everyone, and thank you Austin.
Many have said it already but I want to point it out even more: the shoulders above palms advice is life-changing. I can balance my handstand much better since I've started paying attention to it.
Dude - you're a really clear instructor and I value your attention to detail and alignment! This is easily one of the best fitness tutorial videos I've seen on UA-cam! Thanks!
Having learned the handstand, my trainer told me when I kick up to lead with my hips. Since implementing this I can kick up and hold a straight handstand.
It is important to train kicking up from each leg not just one to prevent imbalances. e.g. Set one 8 - 10 kick ups left leg rest 60 - 90secs Set two 8 - 10 kick ups right leg rest 60 - 90secs Repeat set for each leg and rest Set five 5 - 6 gymnastic kick up left leg then switch to right leg do same amount of gymnastic kick ups on right leg Rest 2mins Using interval timer I then setup 4 - 6 rounds with 30 - 35secs set time with 60 - 75sec rest between rounds Round 1 - chest to wall Round 2 - back to wall Repeat Chest to wall is good for practicing line / body stacking and balance Back to wall good for practicing using fingers/hands/wrists balance control at the end of round use fingers to exit out of handstand.
This video really helped especially the shoulder over palm part. Never realized how big of a difference that can actually make. Thanks for the tips bro keep it up!
Duudee, those bodyline drills are probably the best exercise for handstand progression that I've ever seen. Thanks for this tip.

ive watched multiple videos but yours was the first one that got me to handstand without support for a couple seconds the shoulders above wrist part did bits thanks alot man appreciate it!!!!
What’s up bro! It’s Corey! I haven’t seen a video in a while. Came here to see how your doing. It looks like I’m watching a difference person! You’ve grown a lot bro! Your personality has even grown on camera. Congratulations on the 500k you deserve it. By the way the beard looks awesome 👊🏼
Hi Austin. I want to add some tips. That tips about wrist is golden. It's my 2nd week (Day 9) practicing my Free handstand. I can literally train it ANYWHERE without partner or wall (with the pararel bar or flat ground), at the gym/home/cali park, simply because I've developed my wrist flexibility and consciousness how to use them in exiting safely (especially if I lose my stability and getting pushed forward). I can hold for a couple secs altho not 100% straight, but I know it's only a matter of weeks or months. If you overcome your fear and control your mind (thus coordinating your whole body), you will def master the free handstand rapidly. I train the Free handstand daily or per 2-3 days, depends on my body condition/soreness (workout routine). It feels damn great to conquer your own fears in mastering this technique.
It is quite impressive! I tried to learn handstand for the past few weeks but it scared me a lot. Because of you i could finally do it at the wall for 10 to 15sec.
My track coach had a cool test to determine your dominant leg. She'd get behind you and push you in the back, dead center. Whichever leg you put out to brace yourself was your dominant leg.
Out of all the handstand videos I’ve watched this is probably the one that helps me balance my handstands longer!!! P.S I can already do a handstand I’m just training to hold it longer!!! :D
Had handstands on paralettes on lock for some time but on the ground they've been hit or miss for forever. Your video explained why! I realized I naturally line my shoulders over my hands when doing them on paralettes but never do that when I'm on my palms. Gonna start implementing that & I already know you've helped me see some progress here. Thanks bro!!
tbh i thought most of these tips were bs at first, but i just tried it out and i was like WTF i held it for like 5 seconds, and i couldnt do a handstand before this Thanks Austin, you just earned a new subscriber happy new years! :)
I've been wanting to learn the handstand for a very long time but after all my training of just trying to kick up into it and falling repeatedly for weeks with no improvement I stopped. After this video first try I was able to hold for atleast 5 seconds I cant stress enough of amazing this video is thank you
Before the pump up of it , I think the power of shoulder should be very important to maintain and balance the body. The problem is how do we know we are strong enough to start handstand?
Hey Austin, thanks for being positive all the time and for putting great content out. I hope to see you continue to grow your brand and keep inspiring people! You're positivity is your greatest asset, even more than your physique which is yolked bro! Stay awesome.

U got some huge traps? What workout do u do?
Austin Dunham you forgot to mention using your finger tips to help with balancing! 💪🏾💯
Not hating but i teach gymnastics and can confidently say i have never taught a handstand like that, but the concept is still similar💯👍🏾

Shoulders above palms helped out so much
Omg that shoulder over hand trick was like the last part missing in my free standing handstand can now do them consistently thanks so much!
helped me so much as well
Same
Yeah me too
Same here!
DONT SAY OH MY G*D THATS USING GODS NAME IN VAIN
This was so well timed, I'm 2 weeks in my handstand progression and this is exactly what I needed to make the next step.👍👍
Same with me😅
Did you get the handstand?
Can u do it now?
Update?
Y u do this patrik
Usually people kick with their off-leg; so if you’re right-handed you kick with the left. However, I practice kicking with both legs to avoid imbalances.
I have a stronger right arm and left leg bro
@@Asdfghjkl-ls1or thats what he said... if you're right handed you're propably right footed, that means that left is you're jumping leg
yes I am doing that too! Would highly recommend it!
You got it backwards, buddy.
@@tilmanrotationalinvariant2257 No, the original poster said the opposite.
the shoulders above palms & shorter kick up really helped me out! Immediately got into a good handstand position, now I just need to hold it longer

Just when I wanted to start handstands you make a video:)
+Johnson Kapofi what do you mean
@@JohnsonKapofi thanks.
Mee too
Handstand is a long journey
Dude - you're a really clear instructor and I value your attention to detail and alignment! This is easily one of the best fitness tutorial videos I've seen on UA-cam! Thanks!

Sayless I’m a try this tip
The shoulder over the hand trick is sooo helpfull!
It is important to train kicking up from each leg not just one to prevent imbalances. e.g.
Set one 8 - 10 kick ups left leg rest 60 - 90secs
Set two 8 - 10 kick ups right leg rest 60 - 90secs
Repeat set for each leg and rest
Set five 5 - 6 gymnastic kick up left leg then switch to right leg do same amount of gymnastic kick ups on right leg
Rest 2mins
Using interval timer I then setup 4 - 6 rounds with 30 - 35secs set time with 60 - 75sec rest between rounds
Round 1 - chest to wall
Round 2 - back to wall
Repeat
Chest to wall is good for practicing line / body stacking and balance
Back to wall good for practicing using fingers/hands/wrists balance control at the end of round use fingers to exit out of handstand.
This video really helped especially the shoulder over palm part. Never realized how big of a difference that can actually make. Thanks for the tips bro keep it up!
OMG…that shoulder and hand trick just worked out ….thank you so much ❤️❤️🙏

Dan Don trying to balance my handstand straight legs
Great video and timing Austin. I'm working on my handstand atm.
When I jump, I jump with my left leg, but sometimes when I do squats, I feel my right leg tend to be the one pushing more during the last couple set
That’s because you used your left leg more so it gets weaker quicker
