- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- Today we're going to check out some of the Metal Queens of the eighties. Female fronted heavy metal bands like Chastain with Leather Leone and Warlock with Doro Pesch, but also a handful of underground gems. So we're going to shed some light on some Metal Queens of the eighties. Enjoy!
Happy International Women's Day!
Correction: Heather Leather's song isn't called 'Sons of the Night'. The name of the song is 'We Came to Destroy'. An editing error slipped through.

Lee Aaron was very popular in Canada back in the 1980's as a Metal singer & by the 90's she became a 'blues rock' singer. These days she writes songs for others & owns a recording studio. She sings sometimes for fun at local clubs. She & her husband are big vinyl collectors. I've met them many times at local record fairs or stores.
Cool, I didn't follow her career at all. :) But she should have stayed with the more metal sound.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Her sound hovered mostly on the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal border with a bit of '80s hair metal influence in there. Her best, heaviest albums are Metal Queen, Call of the Wild, and Bodyrock with good tracks scattered on the rest of the albums. Her '90s album "2Preciious" was really grunge influenced and then she went full-on jazzy blues after that point. I heard her latest album is more metal but haven't check it out yet. Great voice.
Doro has an amazing voice!
ah, Cheers!
The rest of her ain't bad either
So do Lee Aaron, Loraine Lewis & Robin Landry ( Widow)
My wife fronted a band. Inspired by The Pretenders, called Chantress. She did covers and originals. Toured for 20 years. Made a shit-ton of money. She then later worked with a songwriter/producer who did the background music for the TV drama series "Prison Break". Women in rock - ROCK! 🤘
Cheers!
That's really cool and inspiring to hear!
Maybe you could do a separate episode on all female '80s bands. Not that many, but just enough to justify an episode. Girlschool, Rock Goddess, Rosy Vista, Leather Angel, Vixen, Phantom Blue. That's just from memory, there's probably a few more.
I remember an Interview with Vixen and said said their Bandname isn't so bad....
In german Vixen (Wichsen) is slang for handjob....
yeah, maybe so, it was easier to find female fronted bands than all female bands of quality.
But..... I remember phantom blue as a 90es band.... Maybe I m wrong
Poison Dollys is another good one.
Show Ya (from Japan) is another one that came to mind later. Started out as pop-rock, but definitely metal by the late '80s.
Very cool list...I think I have heard about 10 of them.
I'd add Wendy O Williams to this list. Her wild persona and punk/metal music was unforgettable.
yeaah I thoughtt of including her, but the list was getting too long. :D
I had a vhs concert of Wendy back one the day. I liked her. High school 😛
But I was honestly surprised at just how good the show was. Sad ending for her.
WENDY! WENDY! WENDY! WENDY! "SHUT UP MILAN, HITMAN, YOU'RE NOT AFRAID TO DIE' 1, 2, 1, 2 F*CK YOU"
Maggots: The Record (Plasmatics) is a pretty great album.
Definitely - how could they leave out Wendy.
I would also add Lita Ford to the list.
By the way I saw Doro twice in Canada and 3 times in Germany. Everywhere, every night, no matter how tired she might be, she stays for hours until every single fan gets an autograph or photo with her. Her incredible dedication to fans kind of reminded me of Dio. In Canada, she casually invited me to Germany to see her 25th anniversary concert back in 2008. I really went there to see her in Düsseldorf, she remembered me and invited me to their backstage party where I got to meet Scorpions and Axel Rudi Pell as well.
Cheers!
All hail Doro... those Warlock albums are killer.
Yes! Cheers!
Chastain's Mystery Of Illusion album is sick! Great video, man!
Great band, thanks man, Cheers!
Chastain. What a band! ♥️
Chastain is the easy winner on this list, far and away. Leather's vocals are incredible and the guitar work is stellar even for that golden era.
Absolutely superb 80s production values here, good honest riffs and some pretty decent/interesting tunes. Thanks for the great video, although finding CD copies of any of this stuff is probably going to be a challenge.
Thanks man. yeah, that will definitely be a challenge. ;) Cheers!
Leather Leone has my favorite female metal voice of all time. I used to call her the female Bruce Dickinson. She crushed it on the song “The Black Night” which also had Fred Coury from Cinderella on drums!
Cheers!
Tell me about Leather Malone. I'm really interested in good female vocalists back when men thought they ruled the world
My favourite all time vocalist of that time was Jodie Turner. She had that raw, bluesy voice that shivered your soul. Still got their first album on vinyl. Still love it 💎
@@geordiejohnston9815 if you check out the band Chastain and their first two albums from 1985-86. She’s a powerhouse. Different than most female vocalists at the time. Not a weak or overly melodic voice. A true metal vocalist with a heavy voice with a lot of range. She’s on some newer releases too.
Awesome list, I'm always pumped to add new music to my collection. Great seeing Rock Goddess and Messiah Force get a shout out towards the end as well!
Thanks! Cheers!
Great, great video indeed!! It brought back to my memory loads of bands I haven't listened to for ages! These are all great bands and releases, from number 15 to number 1! Of course there many other worth mentioning, the list could go on and on: the quality in the 80s was really unmatchable. If I may, I would just mention two more great releases: Messiah Force "The Last Day", an incredibly top-level melodic speed metal attack from Canada, and Malteze "Count your Blessings", a superb, absolutely amazing US heavy metal powerhouse. But there were really lots of female-fronted bands worth checking out, this video is really a great job!
Cheers!
Real great list!! My favourite is azuzena from Santa..so powerful voice. Thank you for this video again.support ruthless metal channel!!
Thanks, Cheers!
Not pure heavy metal, but honorable mention to Blondie and Joan Jett for inspiring many female fronted bands in the 80's.
cheers
Blondie is from the late 70s
Man, this is an awesome list! I love it, I'm definetly gonna to rock out these bands! Awesome job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Doro Pesch is awesome!
Cheers!
Top list, got a few new albums to spin. Having been caning The Unknown album lately -thanks for that gift that keeps on giving btw!
one of the best albums of all time! Cheers! 🤘
@@RuthlessMetalYT it really is -magic record.
Of these I only knew Warlock. But of that time I also know Holy Moses, Detente, Plasmatics, Girlschool, the Runaways/Joan Jett. I’ll definitely check more of your listed bands out, Chastain seemed quite up my alley!
Yeah, Chastain is amazing! Cheers!
Damn good work here, as usual.
Keep it up!
Thanks, Cheers!

Great list! Chastain and Acid being my favorites. Great to see Metal Lady included too!
yeah, that was an obscure gem. Cheers!
Great list Man!i love 80's Metal and my best's are Chastain,Warlock,Zed Yago,Hellion,Znowhite,Phantom Blue,Lee Aaron first period, and Bitch of course!!:-)
good stuff! Cheers!
I Love Betsy. That release was tops. L.A tops.
Doro Pesch
Cheers!
Female fan, here. Surely we're more than 2.5 percent of your audience? Thanks for the shout-out and introducing me to a few women I'd never heard. Love your channel.
Nope, it's only 2.5 percent according to the stats that UA-cam presents to me. It's definitely a male dominated music style heavy metal plus I think that men are overrepresented on UA-cam in general so that makes it even more one sided. Thank you, glad you like the content. Cheers!
Thanks for including "Taste of Iron". It would be nice to see more content with bands that include female members as part of your regular content. Great list, 'Heather Leather' was the only unfamiliar one of the 15.
Thank you, yeah it was kinda rare with female musicians, it's easier to find vocalists. Cheers!
Znowhite is one of my all time favorite bands, and the first time I heard a female voice in a thrash band and it immediately captivated me. Glad to see Lee Aaron open the video. Say what you want about the cheese factor of that video, it rocks. Those early Chastain albums are must-hear for Leather's power. Of course Warlock had to be in this list since those 4 albums are all amazing, and most of Doro's "Force Majeur" album is worth the listen too. Thanks for highlighting some bands I hadn't heard before too like Blacklace.
Edit: one not mentioned but is worth a listen is the EP "Do The Blitz" by Blitz. The track "Tarantella" in particular is killer.
Yes, I love Znowhite, especially act of god. Cheers!
Totally agree on Lee Aaron. Whenever I hear "Metal Queen", I feel like I'm in church. Plus, her ballad "Barely Holding On", is an underrated masterpiece. Breaks me every time. \m/
Isn't Znowhite a Metal Band from Chicago,Il ?
@@KiraReminiec9399 Yes they are.
I appreciate that you put international bands!
Cheers!
Wow! Some good shit, most of which I never heard of! Thanks!
Cheers!

I hoped that one day you will talk about the scream queens of the 80s
And today is that day.
I prefer these ladies than the new ones. I respect their style but now are hundreds of tarjas and hundreds of angelas gossow
My favorites are:
Leather leone - Chastain
Ann boleyn - Hellion
Debbie gunn - Sentinel beast
Down crosby(RIP) - Detente.
Yeah, all the female operatic singers are just boring. Cheers!
Sweet list! There are quite a few bands I don't think I ever heard need to check them :)
Leather Leone is the ultimate heavy metal godess for me eheh
PS - Black Knight has a female singer??? Never noticed it, MOD is a masterpiece!
Yes, it's hard to tell sometimes. :D Cheers!
They had a male singer too, during a different era.
@@sylentstorm8422 I must confess it's the only record I know of them. Do you recomend any other releases?
Also great job on your band, the fire never dies is awesome :D
Great video; thanks for reminding me of some great bands.
I'd heard of most of these with Warlock and Chastain being my favorites.
Heard of Zed Yago, but never heard their music until today.
Never cared for Bitch.
For years I didn't believe Santa, Metal Lady, or Heather Leather were real bands. Their names were too cliche, or just unbelievable for metal bands.
hehe, yeah kinda strange names there. :D
That was outstanding🙏
Thanks boss!
@@RuthlessMetalYT did not know any of them before and they all souded amazing but holy fahk why did i not know about chastain :o what a voice, just as evil sounding as warrel dane was. Also that first crystal pride ep has gone through my speakers at least 3 times in last hour and zed yago are next
Chastain is amazing. they have a long discography and lots of it is great. Cheers!
EXCELENT COMPILATION, WHAT A COMPILATION, REALLY AMAZING, THANXS.-
Cheers!
Gran idea!
Saludos desde Monte Grande, Buenos Aires!
Saludos!
Cool list! Glad you mentioned Girlschool at the end... they were an excellent band.
yeah I had to at least throw them in there. :) Cheers!
Nice - for me as Belgian - to see Acid on your list! I like to mention that singer Kate recently gave new life to the band and now tours as Kate's Acid
Cheers!
I never knew there were so many kick ass metal queens out there. I do like the fact that the ladies can kick ass in hard rock and metal and make it look so damn good. LOVE DORO, she was my first metal queen crush 😍. One of my new favorite bands is Lovebites. If you haven't heard any of their music, ya may wanna look them up. They're givin the power metal men a run for their money. Looking forward to more Metal Queens in the future.
🤘😁🤘
Yeah there are tons of ladies out there. perhaps more now than ever before. Cheers!
Lovebites fucking destroy!
Love the recognition for female vocalists \m/!!!
Cheers! 🤘
Cool list. Good to see Metal Lady, really underrated hungarian metal
Female pokolgep
for sure! Cheers!
Took me by surprise
You left out FEAR OF GOD!!! Dawn Crosby was wicked!! R.I.P.
yeah this was more of a heavy and power metal video.
this is a great and quite entertaining lesson into the women of metal. While I only had heard of Doro I really enjoyed hearing of these other singers. Sadly a couple are no longer with us.. Some were better at making it but they all tried and that's what counted..
Cheers!
Congratulations for the video, and if possible make a second part, even more extended and with the photo of the vocalists..... Greetings from Brazil 🔥🤘🏼🔥
maybe next year. ;) Cheers!
HI ! Very interesting as usual... Do you know Marta Gabriel ( singer of Crystal Viper ) ? She's released a solo album called "Metal queens" that pays tribute to a great deal of these bands ! Personally just missing WOW here. Cheers
Yes, I'm friends with her man over on facebook. :) Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT Hail to Bart then !
Cheers
Warlock and Acid were two of my early favorites, along with Holy Moses.
Cheers!
I think it’s great that you make an effort to shine a light at these bands. Some amazing metal vocal performances here. I really would like to see more of this and maybe some more in-depth bios and reviews of bands with female members. It’s sad that it became a novelty with women in metal, it’s getting better but we still aren’t all the way there, where it’s a natural choice for a girl to start or join a band. But together we can unhinged that open door and hopefully get a lot more great metal in the future from women.
Yes, but nowdays it's mostly operatic female vocalists, I prefer this more metallic approach. Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT Me too, that evening gown operatic stuff does nothing for me.
Wow. This is very 80's metal. Sad you don't get production sound like this anymore.
I agree, this is metal perfection. Cheers!
Hi , this is Kate from kate's ACID, thanks for the support
Oh, is it really you? That's cool. Been a fan of Acid for 20 years or so. Good stuff! Cheers!
ua-cam.com/video/h4hT-H3gC6c/v-deo.html&feature=share
Awesome idea !! I was just wondering about that last week, I have almost zeo women music in my collection, thought that was a bit weird .
hehe, gotta hunt down those chastain albums then. ;) Cheers!
Thanks for always havinhg wicked metal content! Hey your wrong about def leppard but thats ok! Hails and horns from your metal sister in vancouver Canada
what about Def Leppard? Cheers!
If I may, I just want to add that any video where you rank or list albums should have an audio sample... That's something I would have really enjoyed in the Rank 'Em All series; you often mention good songs on bad albums and an audio snippet would be great... Go back and start over!! LOL (Just Kidding...) You do an amazing work!
if you pay for the rights to use their music, then it's fine... :)
@@RuthlessMetalYT oh... but you use some in a few video.... I guess you have the right to use only a limited time per band for free... anyhow, your videos always stir me somewhere cool... Thank you for all of this!
Nice coverage of these ladies from the eighties, first time I've heard of some of them, and it's always good to find new music. .
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned them in the comments already, but if you haven't heard of them, you should check out Band Maid they're incredibly talented. I'd recommend "FREEZER, Shake That" "Turn Me On" and "Don't you tell me' to start. Lots of folks like DICE and "Secret my Lips" as well. There's a lot more that I didn't list, but by then you'll have an idea of what they're capable of and whether you dig them or not.
(^^)v
Cheers!
You hit many of my favorite bands on this, and the supplemental list.

10. Anne Boelynn ( Hellion - Owner of New Renaissance records)
Cheers!
Note that none of these queens sing in the opera soprano register and have more balls than some of the powermetal guy's these day's.
Yeah, I hate that style, it's like whenever a woman are being in a metal band, they are going to sing opera. it's just so dumb, haha
Every time I hear someone gush over Floor Jansen I want to tear my goddamn eyes out. Her voice is insufferable to me. I grew up on Ann Boleyn and that's where I look for badass women vocalists.
@@Powermad-bu4em Floor had potential, but she's wasted in Nightwish (who were great....over 20 years ago when they played power metal).
@@MetalPersonJ
I just can't do modern power metal. I grew up on Helloween and the style these days completely bugs the shit out of me.
@@Powermad-bu4em Frozen Crown, Battle Beast and Tower are three female fronted bands who don't do opera singing. Check them out.
Acid, superb! Love their albums!
Cheers!
I don't know how to say it...I'm german, but i can not listen to Warlock or Doro. The moment I first listened to Chastain with Leather Leone, I knew this was the damn best female metal voice this world will have forever.
Thanks guy, for this video. Great female fronted bands that i didn't knew about
Cheers!
Lee Aaron is always the first metal queen I think of just because I know a guy who was one of her roadies. :)
Cheers!
I like Warlock and Girlschool. I've seen Doro live once but it was after she left Warlock. I will have to look up some of those other bands and find their albums.
Cheers!
Great list. Some others worth I would like to mention are Deathslayer, Syren, Malibu Barbi, Blacksmith,Fahrenheit, Sapient, Trop Féross,Vixen (Marty' sFriedman of course)/Aloha/ early Destiny, Rough, Plattform, Blitzz, Carrie, Monroxxe, Warbride, Malisha, Oral, War Machine, Witches, Abaddon, Wardance, Xandril, Killerhawk, Caress, Jade, Jaded Lady, Flying Vision, Valkylie, Velle Witch, Virgin Killer
yes! that would be for next year then. ;) Cheers!
oh yeah, I forget Blacksmith had the gal, yet their "The Fire Within" album had a dude singing.....crank it higher....make it louder than HELL!
Great list! I'd add Ordained Fate (early 90's speed / thrash) in the honorific mention list
Cheers!
Great video! Can i suggest a video ranking the Napalm Death albums? Really want to see that
I don't listen to them so I doubt that will happen. Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT well, i try at least. Thnx anyway! Cheers!
Yeah TAIST OF IRON!!! BLACK KNIGHT, BLACKLACE and ACID totally rules! And I like that you have featured HEATHER LEATHER - all the years I thought nobody loves this 7“ besides me lol.
I dig it. :) but it's a rather obscure release. :D Cheers!
I would recommend re-doing this video with lots of pics and videos of these ladies. I looked up some of them and they were good looking.
Would be too hot for UA-cam. ;) Cheers!
Zed yago. I loved that band. Loved Jutta who i understand is the oldest woman still singing metal. Love her, she's still gorgeous 😍🎉❤
cheers
And here I would add Malisha, Jaded Lady aka Leather Queen, Aphrodite (Sweden EP 1986) and Rosy Vista.
Cheers!
I've listened to 6 of these 15 bands.
After watching the full video, Budgie and Jaded Lady were the bands that came in my head first. :-)
Budgie? that's a guy singing.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Bruh indeed! What the hell was I thinking when I wrote this? XD
There are so many bands in my head that I ended up confusing them. Hahaha
Take it easy with the drugs. ;) haha Cheers!
@@RuthlessMetalYT no drugs for me, dude! Just Metal. ;-)
Ps: I know you're joking, I'm joking too. Hahaha
hehe. Cheers!
I'd add Rough to the list, it was fronted by Anny Wichardt and they recorded the album First Cut in 1988. One of my favorite albums of all time.
Cheers!
Great music, amazing album art, kick arse riffs. What more could you want?
I'm not sure. ;) Cheers!
Awesome mention to Maryann Scandiffio and Black Lace. Loved that band
Cheers!
Jutta Weinhold was the front-singer from the Band "Breslau" and their Top-Album - "Volksmusik". (From the beginning of the 80-th's.)
ah cool
As one of the girls that heard Lee Aaron way back in about 1990 when she put out Body Rock and then Some Girls Do .. it wasn't for many years after that i even knew she had albums before either of those records...
Chastain is something i heard on an indy radio station that has various music shows covering a lot of genre's... A progressive/speed/traditional/heavy metal show called Screaming Symphony played her solo stuff, but brought up Chastain as well... Been collecting her solo stuff and Chastain's albums as well.. All on cd..
I do have a suggestion for a female led metal band that sits in amongst the traditional with a dash of aggression . Said band is called "SINERGY".. Kimberly Goss is the name of said singer. She has a very powerful voice.. 3 albums all that are unique in their own ways .
Yeah, Chastain are great. Ok, I'll check it out! Cheers!
Was diggin on that Black Knight tune.
Cheers!
The NWOTHM has some good female vocals too like Smoulder ,Satans Hallow, Midnight Dice, Tower, Savage Master, Soul Grinder, Claymorean, to name a few
Yes! lots of women fronting these bands, which is cool. Cheers!
Hey Dude you had forgotten to show the queen of speed

I love Black Knight, Metal Screams is a great night driving banger
Good stuff!
If anyone else is losing their mind trying to figure out why they know that D.C. Lacroix song "Devils Son" so well, it was used in the 1988 straight to video slasher "Hack-O-Lantern". Sadly it looks like the soundtrack doesn't have a release.

And well deserved Queen at that
Damn, I've been lucky to have seen 5 of these bands in the 80's & 90's. Damn, I'm fukkin old....
damn, I haven't seen any of 'em live. Cheers!
Velvet Viper kicks ASS! Black Knight was also great. Of course Warlock and Chastain were great too. I’m off to crank up more Velvet Viper
Do it! Cheers!
Have you made a Rank 'em all of Coroner's Discography video yet?
No I haven't but I probably will some time this year.
I'm familiar with Chastain. Heard them a lot back in the 80's. I live in Greater Cincinnati.

The Great Kat needs to added, speed metal. Her demo "Satan Says" and debut "Worship me or Die" came out in the 80s and she is still active
yeah, i reviewed one of her albums once and I didn't like it and she got furious with me. hehe. I think it was mostly just image, don't think I've heard anything from her that rocked my boat.
