Jasper is really cute. ❤
Thank you! 😊😊
Pro tip: If you put it in smaller chunks in the freezer than you don’t have to hit it with a hammer. Simply put in the fridge the night before and it will be thawed out.
Thanks for the tip! I started using ice cube trays as well, and smaller portions too. We learn as we go!
@@KatieFleming Totally! Smaller Tupperware also works. Now I freeze enough for three days portions in my large batches. Three days seems to be the limit for how long they like it, and after that they won’t eat it and I have to unthaw a new container. It’s great to learn from eachother. The bird community can be awesome that way. (And sometimes it’s toxic, but that’s another story 😏)
Ha! No kidding. It was definitely a harder decision to start posting about Jasper's plucking for exactly that reason. But there's a lot of great people here too :)
I don't really freeze batches of food like in this video anymore. I started freezing things separately and then making my own mix just to switch it up. I'd say 70% fresh foods, 30% frozen depending what I'm feeding him.
@@KatieFleming Awesome idea. I kinda do the same thing. And I know what you mean about posting about the plucking. I have a rescue plucker and every time I post a pic of him I feel the need to make a big old disclaimer about him being a rescue, that it’s a habit he’s in now, that he’s healthy and we’re doing our best, etc. because people have a lot to say about things they don’t know anything about 😜
Hi Katie, thankyou so much for your video it was great to watch. My wife & I picked up our beautiful baby boy Eccie, Cygnus, yesterday. He hatched in the first week of September so is only a baby & I'm terrified of messing things up. I really want to start harness training & have been watching your videos on that too. All your tips would be greatly appreciated 🥰
Congratulations on your new baby! So exciting. Hope you find my videos helpful - don't be shy to request a video, always interested to hear what people are looking for! The biggest thing for the first couple of weeks is letting him adjust to his new surroundings and letting him come out when he wants to. Don't force it. He has lots of new sights, sounds and both of you to get used to! Talk to him a lot!
@@KatieFleming he flew for the very first time this morning, but unfortunately flew right into the window, slid down the wall & into the cats bed & scared the daylight out of the cat 😂
Oh no! Be careful with windows - they can get concussions pretty easily. You can buy window decals for birds (barely noticeable by us) that will help prevent that. Also I trained Jasper to "touch" the window (tap with his beak) in every room so he knows where they are. Start it early!
@@KatieFleming yeah definitely will be doing that. Poor baby was terrified as was I!!!!
He's ok though thankfully other than being a little more lazy with his breakfast & wanting me to hand feed him while cuddling him (which I gave into for a little bit cause I felt bad, but soon realised it's probably not a good idea & didn't want to start a habit 😅)
@@KatieFleming could you maybe do some videos on your top training tips & things that you wish you had of known early on with your baby to make things a bit easier for you both 🥰
Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. There were several super-useful tips I hadn't thought of in there. A couple Q's: About how long did it take you to make the chop and bag it? Is it all organic or no? (That variety in organic is hard to find here) Also, do you mind sharing your eclectus group? Jasper's personality is so different from our boy's. Jasper is very sweet and accommodating. Our boy is food and cage aggressive but we've learned how to work around it.
Thanks for watching, I know it was a long one! I think it took about 2 hours or so for everything. Bagging goes quickly if you use a measuring cup to scoop the chop into the bags. I only buy organic when it's on sale, if I had a much higher salary then it would be doable. Absolutely I can share the group - do a search for 'Eclectus in Eden' on Facebook. Tons of great Ekkie owners/wealth of info there. Jasper isn't always sweet hehe he's quite possessive of some toys so I do need to be careful otherwise I get a hard pinch from him. It's just about learning their boundaries and like you said how to work around them. We need to be respectful of them too and learn what they like/don't like to have a happy life together :) Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hey there, this video is genuienly a lifesaver! I've been adding in my lentils to freeze and it's been making it so mushy and icky. You mentioned freezing them separately, as well as beets, but may I ask when you add those things in? I may have missed it somewhere but I didn't see it mentioned in this video. Additionally, when do you add the sweet potato in? Do you freeze it as well?
Last question, no need to answer it! But do you find Jasper going for the fruit over the dinner? My ekkie would gobble down the passionfruit and leave the dinner if I served them together. Cheers!
Glad you found it helpful! Yes, some veggies get mushy so I do them separately (and lately I only freeze a couple things now and chop the rest fresh for the week). You want to thaw the portion overnight so it can thaw slowly. Sweet potatoes freeze well. Beets stain and ruin the rest of the food so that's why I leave them on their own without mixing them in.
Yes, Jasper's the same for the fruit 😄 I mix the fruit with the meal so he kind of has no choice but to eat the other things while going for the fruit.
Hope this helps - don't be shy with more questions or other types of videos you'd like to see!
@@KatieFleming Hi! i am looking to get an eclectus parrot in the very near future. this will be the first bird ive ever owned so ive been doing so much reading and video watching to see things i want to include with my own ekkie when i get him. diet and food generally is one of my biggest concerns and i want to make sure i get it right. I really like the veggie blend videos you have
i see you say you freeze some vegetables and then chop the rest fresh for the week. i am curious what generally do you like to freeze and chop up fresh weekly? also how do you create variety for your ekkie so he doesnt get bored?
any and all details are greatly appreciated since i am extremely new with eclectus parrots and birds in general. dont be afraid to make it sound like a dummy guide because that would be deeply appreciated.
thank you so much for your time and help
@@shmokes4728 Hi Shmokes, thanks for commenting! Ekkie diets are more complex than other parrots so it's great you're doing all your research before hand. If you can get your hands on a copy of Dr. Marshall's Guide to Eclectus book it is incredibly helpful. Roughtly 60% veggies/fruit, 20% organic seed mix, grains, and some extra protein now and then (he recommends hard boiled eggs with the shell, and even some well cooked non-seasoned meat with the bone sometimes).
Over the years I've slightly changed what I feed Jasper, this reminds me I will do another video soon with his current diet and how I meal prep each week.
I have a paper and I've split it into categories: veggies, fruit, grains, sprouts, misc. I wrote a list of everything under each category and I pick and choose a bunch from each every week. That way he gets a good variety.
Are you subscribed? Keep an eye out, I'll do another video within a couple weeks with meal prep examples.
@@KatieFleming thank you so much for your response and taking the time to write back! I will be picking him up on Wednesday so my current knowledge will definitely be put to the test.
I really liked the idea of freezing up 3 different parrot chops and thawing my servings as I go. I am sorry if this is silly but is there any reason why you wouldn’t want to use a parrot chop blend with your Ekkie? In other words, is it better to prepare meals fresh weekly? Or is there not much difference?
Thank you so much again for your help and your awesome content!
@@shmokes4728 So exciting! Congrats on your new baby. I will forever kick myself for NOT doing this when I first got Jasper - give him as many greens as you possibly can so he gets used to different textures. It's the one variety I didn't feed enough of from the get-go and Jasper is ULTRA picky still to today. Broccoli, kale, endives, etc.
Freezing portions is definitely a time saver. Nowadays I pretty much only freeze the foods that I cook, the rest are made fresh (raw) every week. I recommend meal prepping once a week for the week of the fresh things, it honestly takes me no more than 20 min with a food processor.
Shalom , shalom , Katie, MERCI BCP TRÈS BIEN EXPLIQUÉ, ME SUIS ABONNEE A TA CHAÎNE, BISOUS 😚 MARISA DE BELGIQUE 🥰
Merci boucoup for the sub!
Hi, I have 2 parakeets jack and bea. Is there a smaller version of chop for them. Please let me know. Thanks
Hey! My only experience is with Jasper, but I assume you would just need to chop it more finely for your parakeets. I suggest googling chop specifically for them in case there's any difference in dietary requirements :)
How do you unfrized before serving?
Let is melt or warm up?
I let it defrost in the fridge the day before 🙌
Skip ahead to see the results/Jasper's reaction before committing to the entire video @7:11
which is much better baked before put to freezer or raw?
For this recipe it's raw only (except the ingredients I mentioned I cooked) so you can freeze everything raw. If you want to serve it warm you can microwave individual portion sizes once thawed for about 15-25 seconds, but the purpose of this video was to offer a raw option. If you search through my other videos I have fully cooked recipes as well. Cheers!
Did you use ALL the ingredients you had on the table? How long would that last?
Yes, all! It's a huge batch. I never measure anything so each time is slightly different (and depends how much your bird eats), but anywhere from 3-4 months.
Hi, I am new as a bird owner and I would love to know how you thaw the frozen chop for your parrot. I searched on every platform and couldn't find any answers. Please help
Congrats on your new baby! I take out a portion size the night before and thaw it in the fridge in a container. You can serve it cold or slightly heated.
@@KatieFleming Thank you so much
And quinoa can be given raw
Looks like you are putting Jas on a diet KT
Never, this boy eats well!
@@KatieFleming - No wonder he is amazing
Sweet potato needs to be cooked, otherwise they won’t be able to digest it properly.
Looks like some of his feathers have been chopped off. Pity
He's fully flighted, I don't trim his feathers
Ignorant comment to make; different bird species have different length of tail feathers and varying levels of primary wing feather projection. Many short-tailed parrots, including eclectus, also have shorter primary wing feathers that don’t extend like they do on parakeets, macaws, and other long-tailed parrots.
