I guess if that pad was totally gone forreal, the only way to fix is was to steal power from somewhere else to power the fan constantly, not the way it's supossed to be but would save the console at least, that was some nasty broken traces, you did an amazing job
If that were the case you could use an ohmmeter to find where that circuit is (hopefully close by) and run a trace to wherever you find it. Not ideal but it would work.
Words cannot describe how much I love this channel. Great job on this as an electronics engineer I have major respect for you finding a way to make fixing stuff profitable!
If ever anyone deserved to break a Million for Christmas it's you man. The moment you realise exactly what they did to break the console just sets off the internal screaming. This was yet another great fix though. Also props on that ultra zoom. new camera? don't think you've gotten that close up before.

Findet alles online statt.
I replaced the Fan on my PS5, too. There are many PS5 with bad Fans that are very noisy and you can order the good variants online. So I ordered one and replaced it. Absolute silence now. EDIT: The Nidec Fans are the bad ones, I replaced mine with one from Delta. Those are silent.
Yeah, I honestly thought something else was going to be going on with this machine and the fan connector was just the seller's cover story. I mean, props for fixing it, but it is a straight soldering job, seems strange that they wouldn't get that fixed.
@@csgowoes6319 It's extremely small, Steve just makes it look easy, because he's good. If you're not that good it's probably best to sell it and buy a new one, considering how crazy the prices are at the moment the seller might actually make money.
Apparently this ps5 was not quiet enough as advertised, so they had to tear the fan off. However, the perfect amount of thermal paste can fix the connector.
With the caveat of never having repaired a connector like this myself, I really like Phil's / TheCod3r's idea of using a piece of solder wick to build up new anker points to more securely affix the connector.
I liked this video, even as of right now the ads are playing. And I haven't even seen the first frame yet. I already know this is going to be a good video from Steve.
One good way to save space is use an external hard drive for all ps4 games, and ps5 games you don't play often (Astro's playroom). The transfer speed is decent, and a 4tb usb-c hard drive is cheap.
I bought one, i had the adata xpg s70 Ssd but it was not reconized by my ps5. So i sent it back to Amazon. I hope this one works. Keep up the good work😃
I was actually watching this exact PS5 on eBay hoping the seller would lower the price as it was the only thing holding me back from purchasing it. Imagine my surprise when i clicked on this video and recognized the PS5 and listing description lol. Glad it went to someone that was able to fix it and it didn't end up in the bin.
I installed the new Sabrent heatsink and a 2TB SN850. Also, I just have to say, I’m sick of these people breaking their console because they don’t have a clue what they’re doing, then having the gall to still scalp it.
If I’m being honest this looks mad fun bruh I just took apart my ps5 to do some clean just need to put the fan fan back in once I compress air it. U should of seen how much enjoyment that brought me
I think I might have just run a jumper cable and put a new connector between the fan and board taking most of the stress off the board. Like you said this could be a one and done if you have to take the fan off again and then you will be in for a lot more work. But none the less it is a runner 🍺
I've done this once for my friend on a ps3 he was trying to open it clean it because it smelled horrible and the notorious fan connector ripped off. I was scared to do it but if you're gentle and careful it sure is a satisfying fix.
add a short cable extension from the board to the broken socket connector and stick it on the plastic case, no more fuss on how to create new mount points to solder it back on the board
when I was in the Marines and we had to repair damage like that We, had copper sheets or different weights to replace a pad if it need replaced like you have here. than we had a high strength glue that would glue the new copper trace down. Some times we even had to repair a burn spot in a board we had to scrap a way every thing to clean board and rebuild it.
No, solder mask would add nothing in terms of strength and you are right to be nervous ! surface mount connectors are just to be avoided unless you can see mechanical mounting points that are 'through hole' if you do have to do it try to get something to hold the bottom part as well and be very slow and wiggle very gently and you will be ok, most problems occur because people don't have Steve to show how it should be done and just rip the bloody things off, now that you're aware you will have no problems at all !..cheers.
1:28 For this type of connector, these days, I usually just tug from the wires. As long as there isn't some kind of corrosion or substance causing the connector to be really stuck, the connector will always release before the wires do.
That's what I was thinking, it's prefer to break the wires that the entire motherboard haha I was thinking to replace the fan and connect directly to another 5V/12V PSU and it can be a fast fix for this (but it's not the great one)
I saw this on eBay back in October. Made several offers on it but then it sold. For the full asking price of $600. Shipping to my location would have been another $106.75. The seller broke their system and still made money on it. Ridiculous. Console repair is literally not worth it these days for small scale opportunists
Nice fix Steve. I was just browsing ssd for ps5. What zoom was your microscope at? The only reference frame I could gather was the flux tip that looks like a 6 inch metal bar.
I don't actually know. It's a new microscope so I'm just learning how to use it. It's a digital scope so it's all new to me. I can say that it was zoomed in quite a bit.
I never reized how easy it was to install an ssd expansion til now, now I need to get a driver set and an sad for my ps5, lol. Thankfully I know just where to get both thanks to you
I think it would be better to remove the connector from board, attach it to 10-15cm wire cable, the other end of wire solder on the board and glue the cable to the board.

i use the Aorus 7000s and it's been great. I recommend it often to those who have yet to take the plunge on adding an SSD to their PS5.
The skill is incredible. It's only when you see the connector zoomed out, that you realise how tiny the pads were. Great work.

Got the same ssd storage added to my ps5. Easy instalation huge heatsink. Works great with ps5. No loading times all fine. Amazing ssd drive.

Was any solder mask used over the pints to protect them and get them on the board nice and solid? Or is there a reason why that would be a bad idea?
Solder mask isn't for strength. In this case solder mask isn't really needed. The fan connector has exposed pins from the factory.
These videos are so satisfying to watch even though I don't know most of the vocabulary being used.
So glad you like watching them!

Easy: just cut the cables and make a new connection /junction
Solder mask wouldn't help too much. I'd probably use epoxy in this scenario on both sides of the connector.
