Establishing a Reliable Painting Practice

  • Jordan Wolfson, a contemporary painter and teacher, speaks about making certain decisions in order to establish an ongoing painting practice:
These last weeks I’ve been thinking about my role as a painting teacher and about what to offer you all that would most easily help you move into your own deeper, fulfilling and authentic painting practice.
I was reflecting back onto my own journey as a painter and the years I spent gathering my tools and skills and influences - and the deep frustration I felt from the longing to paint, but not knowing really what I wanted to paint, or - more importantly - how I wanted to paint. I really didn’t even know whether I was a representational painter or an abstract painter - and in some very real way this was a kind of identity crisis. I wanted to dig in deep - but I just didn’t know how.
One of the things I’ve learned - and this isn’t true for all makers, but seems to be true for most of the painters that I know and that I’ve taught over the years - is that we learn by doing, by going, by marking and making. We don’t really know ahead of time what kind of painter we are and what kind of painting we want to do. We find that out through painting.
A lot of you have taken a good number of courses over the years - with me and with other painting teachers. And that’s invaluable. It’s very important to get lots of influences from different sources. But how do you go from being a student to being an artist? How do you begin to discover your own authentic path as a painter? How do you turn that crucial corner and move into a deeply fulfilling engagement? How do you establish a reliable painting practice?
With that question in mind I put together a free video. Same title as the question: “Establishing a Reliable Painting Practice”.

Jordan, as always, you have great words, great advice for painters and about painting. I love that you connect the simple act of mark-making to a feeling of vital meaning. There have been times recently when I felt that I had nothing to say as an artist, and I specifically felt that I was not a "painter". (You have alluded to this feeling elsewhere.) But simply by making the marks, by doing the painting, I again feel that I AM an artist, I AM specifically a painter, and it creates meaning in my life that is worth sacrificing other important things for. Bravo!

oh my gosh thank you...what a gift finding your channel yesterday. I stumbled upon you while researching Morandi's work thoroughly enjoying the entire webinar. I thrifted a Morandi print a few years back and it possessed me, a fav that always finds a prominent spot in my small spaces. The metaphysical aspect you brought up in his work resonates so deeply for me and reinforces my need to paint that haunts yet evades me on a daily basis. I feel that finding you will be the key to open up the flood walls that tower so high over my intentions. By the way you need to check out Dr. Mark Vierra a science of mind teacher his center in North Hollywood joined the youtube world during covid what a gift. I kept thinking as I watched you that you seemed so familiar then I realized voice mannerisms ideals all of it you may be brothers from another mother...or if you're adopted as I am hmmm who knows haha. Anywhooo you have a new sub for life in me and I think your incredible. Trisha in San Diego & Kentucky ;)
