The 90s Comic Book Garbage that inspired Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. LMDs - Comic Tropes (Episode 39)

- The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tv show is using robot duplicates called LMDs - Life Model Decoys. I went in search of a comic book that used a lot of LMDs and came across a mid-90s comic book that highlights the worst of 90s excess. Poor plotting, bad art, gimmick covers and killing off major characters. This issue has it all.

If Cosbytron offers you a drink get the hell out of there
Or if he asks you if you wanna see his pudding pop...
Now if you want to see a "GOOD" use of LMD's and a gripping SHIELD story, hunt down the 80's "Nick Fury vs SHIELD" miniseries.
I second the suggestion.
The Crosbytron gag hasn't aged well.
Could be worse it could have made the robot rape joke.
@@hermeus5239 I stilll think that shits funny
I was just about to say the same thing.
I think this video's script was written before Cosby's activities became public knowledge
Cosbytron is hilarious!
Oh 90's comics...the era of over indulgence, where spectacle was prized over substance. Every male character ripped to the max like Mr. Universe competitors, and every female character with the inhuman proportions of a barbie doll. And the plethora of Pouches, crosshatching, over-sized sci-fi guns and nonsensical plots!
You really did find quite the perfect exemplar of that decade. Great vid!
OMG the nineties. The 90s are so painful to me because there was so much potential that was squandered. There was some legitimate art talent on display. The look of comics was being revolutionized. In the early 90s, I think the right people were in the right places. I loved Jim Lee on X-Men (and it still seems unnatural for him to be working at DC). Todd McFarlane's style worked pretty good for Spider-Man. Then, everybody started to see dollar signs. Instead of hiring artists with good fundamentals and unique styles, we got less talented artists who copied popular styles. We had gimmick covers. We had events that were really non-events. We had speculators. All this was encouraged by the suits who seemed to think there would be endless profits forever.
It was a dark time. And unlike the 1950s and the advent of the Comics Code, it was a dark time that the industry brought upon itself.
On the up side, at the time I picked up a few independent comics, and I started to follow Sin City. That kept me a around a little while longer.
As much as I disliked the storylines at the time, I really did love Todd McFarlane's art on Spiderman. His gritty, over detailed style just really fit the comic well.
I was a massive fan of all of the Image founders at the time. Just huge. Their influence was so strong it drowned out a lot of other stuff. Took me a while to really appreciate some of their contemporaries.
Remember the issue of G.I. Joe that McFarlane drew? Chuckles and Zanzibar, I believe.
Sergeant Fury's Howling Commandos would have had this whole thing sorted out in less than one issue
LOLOL CosbyTron totally caught me off guard! :D
In the late 90s, too many comics publishers - and authors - forgot the Iron Law of Pulp:
"The story is more important [worth] than the paper".
13:49 - Should have been a CosbyTron line
This was indeed a painful time in Marvel comics. A better outcome for the Punisher would have been after killing the "LMD" Fury, that SHIELD would have used him in Suicide Squad manner. That would have been pretty damn cool I think.
Would love it, if robots like that started gathering round mine. Hated the 90's for comics - but this review has ensured that I just HAVE to pick up this comic.
wow that's some bad art. but i like the drawing of Patrick Swayzee on the bottom of the page at 11:52. Also I heart the robots!
Uh oh keep Cosby tron away from the boiler and whistletron 😳
I miss those holofoil covers! They should still release one or two a year, IMO.
Keep the bots. Another great stroll down memory lane. When I was immersed in it as a kid in the 90s, it all seemed so awesome. But looking back, it was really indicative of everything that was wrong with the industry. Greed and speculation were overshadowing story and art. The comicbooks themselves were becoming freakish Frankenstein's monsters with multiple covers, holograms, and polybagged shit. Anywhoo, keep the vids coming. Having a blast going through your old vids!
All I could think about at the end with that shootup was that SNL ‘Dear Sister’ sketch 😂
This episode pretty much "bot" me over!
Seeing CT hangout out with a bunch of robots while looking at another silly 90s superhero comic is nothing short of fun.
LMD=Lorchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
Am I too late for the comments? Sorry CosbyTron gave me a drink, and I just woke up. The 90s had spectacular leaps in technology. It was like the leap to HD. That gave the artists some amazing tools. The amazing artists were dragged down with some of the same bad writing with added dark grittiness... because 90s. I bought too many worthless #1 issues because who knew what was going to be the next Superman! If the adults were doing it surely it was a great idea!
You're like a comic book Alton Brown!!
I liked Daredevil's armor. :(
RobotsPajamas makes two of us
Eww
Cosby-Tron, lol!! Nicely played, sir.
Fury will never run out of LMD's, hell i bet the Fury on the moon is really an LMD
Anxietytron is my favorite.
The moment that I knew that this was inked by Jimmy Palmiotti: The words “Ash” and “22 Brides” graffitied on a random building. 90’s ahoy!
The absolutely best LMD story is collected in the 1980s trade paperback 'Nick Fury vs SHIELD'.
I can't say much about it because of spoilers but it's a superb Sci Fi story, comparable to 'They Live' and the Pod People.
Also, what on earth happened to Nick Fury (and Cpt America) being semi-immortal due to exposure to the super-soldier formula?
The whole LMD in Agents of Shield feels like Marvels atempt at the Jocasta story arc. i'm sure others have stated the same thing. I missed out on all the 90's comics, the fairer sex had caught my eye by then.
I dont get one thing about the 90's crisis. Speculators have pumped sales to the EXTREME level. Than it collapsed.
But why didn't it just come back to the normal level? Marvel ad DC should have had lot's of money aggregated after super sales.
Why were they at the level of bankrupcy?
Ron Perelman was looting money from Marvel while he owned it.
What a great episode of comic tropes! Lobed the infotron familly
the robots messing up the flow of the content just my opinion tho
15:06 Is that...a TEC-9...with an infrared scope on it? And wait, how does he see the scope glint, the suns just coming up... Also I'd like to point out that using random commercial tie-in like Grape Nuts Tron also seems like a 90's reference--remember Comboman from Marvel? Trope-Ception...?
I actually liked Daredevils armor, maybe im the only one but meh.
So no one is gonna talk about how in the episode infotron is introduced he states the water heater is his cousin?
Everyone at the family reunion should watch their drinks if Cosbytron is there there is gonna be a lot of sleepy robots
Cosbytron just killed me!! :)
I'm glad we don't hear too much from Infotron these days...that was rough.
Hahaha this episode is great! How did I miss it before! Love it.
Comic Tropes: Age of InfoTron!!!
Flying battleship? The Giant Claw!!!
Dude, crazy mad number of robots you got there--you put Dr. Who to shame! LOL.
AND OF COURSE: DUM DUM DUGGAN was an LMD the whoooooole time LOL
I’d say that even worse example would be the Spider-Man “Maximum Clonage” books. Which also guest-starred The Punisher, as I recall.
Dude I love your Channel so much. Bring infotron back pls!!!!
Question I am Just wondering if you can cover clone conspiracy since that story uses way so many tropes that it ain't even funny
Yes, it's absolutely something I will cover but I also have the calendar booked pretty solid for a few months so it may be a while.
okay take your time man no rush
That Garth Ennis Steve Dillon Punisher is so damn good
5:40 flying battleship... so shield headquarters is the giant claw?
I wonder how Infotron is doing haven't seen him in a while
I just discovered this video... five years late. First, I wouldn't call the art "subpar." It's stylized and over-the-top (especially with all the male characters' bodies), but the only part of it that seems subpar is the storytelling. And why complain about Val's unique suit when "DOO-gan" had been wearing a derby with his uniform for decades?
Lol. At 1:15 hes talking about 90s garbage and has a shiny metal cover. That is 100% 90s right there.
We need infotron to return! It’s been so many years
Yikes. Cosbytron? Hope you kept an eye on your drinks.
Great job with the slide whistle though.
PS. Cosbytron might be able to help with that water heater date.
And yes, I know I’m like 2 years late on this video.
Wasn't the a book called something like live wire in the 2000 that was about lmd's?
I actually enjoyed 90s comics. There may be some bad ones, for example, the one you used in the video, but there are goods ones too. Some examples of good 90s comics include Jim Lee's X-Men, Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man, and Rob Liefeld's New Mutants / X-Force.
I need to find a comic channel who isn't scared to actually read comics!
Special Guest Star: Fuck-bot 5000!
That was . . . surreal.
holy crap im addicted. Great videos brother
Someone has seen 'House of Cosbys', Theo!
Oh god keep Cosbytron away from the water heater!!!
This shit is why I stopped reading comics. The art is bad, the art style is bad, the plotlines are terrible as is the dialogue. I read the occasional graphic novel now, and most of them are not superhero stories. Superheores really are shit, daft tbh, and this era hammered it home for me.
The Punisher won't kill other SHIELD agents? he'll kill anyone that shoots at him
Is it just me or are half the infotrons having framerate issues
The SFX in this video are seamless! :-D but honestly, i read the over the edge crossover, and i never read the conclusion: i just saw the funeral episode in Hulk. Thanks for the info.
11:08 Nick just doesn't have a hotel Suite on the helicarrrier.... he has a suite from the BUNNY RANCH in Nevada. OUTSIDE Las Vegas. 😉
I dunno about this Cosby-Tron guy, I get some bad vibes from him...
i fucking loved and hated my time collecting comics in the nineties. i was a Marvel zombie and xmen was god. 10 titles a month surely made a big dent in my wallet. WHEW!! but then image came along to ruin it by making clones of the popular mutants and claiming it their own. surely their art and coloring were awesome but every time i decide to read their comics i could always notice bits of pieces of Gambit, Storm, Prof. Xavier and most of all WOLVERINE in their characters. SHEEESSH!!!.
I honestly thought that trenched thug was the 90s version of Johnny Blaze
They forgot to include Wolverine into the mix..
the Blonde guy Samson looks like the guy from Comix Zone, the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive game. retty uncanny
Marvel has no idea what to do with either Punisher or Nick Fury. I'm waiting for another reboot of the Marvel Universe. Leave the Cinematic Universe separate.
They should have given Daredevil a single glowing energy eye.
I like that Daredevil armor (rolling my eyes)
I can't draw better this, but this art is crappy af. Good Vid. Robots,..eh, good cosb impression though.
LMDs are the absolute worst. Just like you said, a crutch for lazy writers.
This ep really needs subtitles.
Ohhhhhhhh the 90s. So much comic booking.
Sweet jibus infotron crashing the episode
Your robots are funny
Bring back Anxiety-Tron!!!
Cosby-tron might be the best part of this video
I love Cosbytron voice
i like to think agents of shield doesnt know this comic exists
or ignores it completely
I'm sure they've never heard of it. And that's ok.
yeah im glad theyve never seen it sounds awful would be great to wipe it from the history books haha
Is it a UA-cam comic reviewer trope to have aluminum foil robots 🤖?
I can't remember a good 90s comic book storyline.
Francisco Mictil the only good comic book storyline in the 90s was spawn and asm issue 400
Age of Apocalypse, Onslaught, Kevin Smith run on Daredevil.
Man Without Fear and The Death of Superman
zack collins the death of Superman is, actually fucking stupid. Since anybody dead comes back, and the whole thing is just... superman dies, bleh.
The first time I saw a LMD in a book was Captain America Avengers Disassembled TPB. I liked the LMDs in the Avengers/Invaders book.
They've absolutely been well used before.
I know this is old but Jake was Nick's brother not son
You lost me at Cosby tron...
Are some of the robots ghosts?
Cosbytron. . . . .lol
Doc Samson= Brock Samson
Due-Gen.
House of Cosby’s
man cosby tron didn't age well
Cosby Tron was a terrible idea even when he uploaded this.
dum dum duegan
Lmao cosby-tron
Tromic copes
I enjoyed the angel story line. I thought it was an intriguing new take on the character.
please, stop using those awful robots
Alejandro Caballero Salas Ouch.
Infotron forever. How about an episode where the infotrons fight each other comedically
More robots please. 😶👌
Keep Infotron, Chris. He's awesome. He's become, ironically, a trope, in a channel about tropes.
Those robots are hilarious
I don’t see how comics today are any better
You say Punisher is a murder I'd say hero
