It's been a very interesting the applications as medium ! I can see so many applications. In the beauty industry when I was in it we paid big $ for algae treatments .

My fantasy is to have a home scaled production set up. I would want to process food and fuel (both for home heating and cooking and transport) mainly, maybe more petrochemical based projects eventually. I would want to also find a way to cap my emissions from using the biofuels around the home (both carbon dioxide and methane) into food for the algae tanks. If I could figure out how I would make it open source so anybody could use it and no one would have to buy gasoline, diesel, natural gas or propane any more and we could take a serious chunk out of the fossil fuel industry. Just wish I was smart enough to actually design and buld it!

It depends on the strain of algae you are most interested in - but it requires a sterile environment and diligent lab techniques, cleaning as you go. Going to a local college (or even an aquarium supply shop) may be a good place to find already subcultured algae strains. A local college may also allow you to use their sterile rooms or equipment (and if you want to learn more about the basics of culturing, doing one class wouldn't hurt while also opening the door to using their spaces in the beginning).
      Here's a pretty thorough pdf:

More than all other uses of algae, algae is a source of biofuel that can be water positive. The advantage of Alage is that it can grow on industrial waste water. The end product of the process is clean water and grown algae. This means you have cleaned industrial waste water, which is an energy intensive process, without using much energy, while also obatianing a major source of biofuel. Moreover, Biofuel ihas a ready market which will be happy to pounce on these to mix it with their petrol and diesel.
Additionally, being carbon absorbants, the algae biofuels are carbon neutral when compared to other sources of biofuels.

Algae aren’t nearly as interesting as cyanobacteria! Spirullina is a cyanobacteria.
Cyanobacteria were the first organisms to photosynthesize back when the earth had no oxygen on it’s atmosphere. Cyanobacteria grew rapidly by eating the abundant sun, and provoked the GREAT OXIDATION, when the organisms that didn’t adapt died of oxygen poisoning.
