If they spend precious minutes to explain what is seaweed, alga and cyanobacteria, the audience might get bored

They don't want to solve the problems they invent, their goal is to use these problems to find new ways to control the population.
I like this video because, biologists and volunteers are utilizing tech the RIGHT way; to help the environment

35 years ago, a fellow gardener (UK) told me he used seaweed on his allotment as his sole fertiliser. Collected it in bulk in his truck, washed it, dried it, dug it in or used it as a mulch around perennial crops. Excellent vegetables.
Whenever I go to the beach, if there's an excess of seaweed left high and dry on the shore, I do the same. It is good and I'm not surprised the UK has already started seeing a use for the Sargasson Algae.
As I am some distance from the beach and don't go there as often as I'd like, I have started using types of pondweed in the same way. If you get a vigorous type, you've got a great source of easily compostable algae to help build soil levels.
Doesnt it contains salt that could harm plants?
Using seaweed is a quite old practice. It's interesting to know that people still use it! And also use pondweed!

we need more of such videos. and if there is a way to show these videos in more public places to spread awareness , the better. Its not that people dont want solutions, people are not aware of solutions. If it becomes easily available farmlands across the world can use it. A lot of countries are already into organic farming. knowledge of algae in farming needs to be promoted.
Except the most obvious solution. Reduce the worlds population. That will have a direct and immediate impact on climate change. But instead they promote policies that increase the global population at every turn.
@@brianlevine249 true. Each one of us can contribute to it consciously. I for instance always carry cloth bags for grocery and produce shopping. its similar to ziplock bags just that instead of ziplocks it has drawstrings. each bag is the capacity of 1 kilo for dry grocery like lentils and beans ect. for produce i have larger bags. the bags are made of muslin material which weighs almost nothing. I empty the contents to glass jars when I come back home, wash the cloth bags and keep them ready for my next grocery trip. I never buy more clothes or shoes than I actually wear. just 2 pairs of party wear shoes is my luxury !! Ive stopped using shampoo and conditioner for a long time and am experimenting on Enzyme water with natural ingredients like Shikakai and Reetha (soap bean and soapnuts) for laundry and dishwashing. Im trying not to use detergents unless its an emergency or an absolute necessary. no matter what companies want to sell, its ultimately our own conscience to follow or not follow them and do our bit.

@Lori Anderson the world population is only expected to grow so much. The predictions are for 11 billion people by 2050. That's a lot, but thats expected to be the highest point we'll reach.
These companies need to go public and be more aggressive with their marketing efforts to really get this technology going. This has a lot of potential but most won’t go for it unless you begin showing higher profits or steal market share by utilizing a consumer base that wants to be more eco-friendly in a cheaper way.
Yes, I definitely agree. How many times do we see good ideas that could make a difference, perhaps even a significant difference - but never seem to see them get past a short video on UA-cam?
@@debbiehenri345 I hardly ever did. So they need to. I would totally buy products like algae things and it be good if people start learning more about it so they can also tell the consumers after they learnt bcz I never knew about it before, just recently.

It's plastic you can eat, the future is bright. It's content like these that make tomorrow seem hopeful. Imagine being able to drink the soda and eat the can like an ice cream cone: amazing.

Algae can be grown even faster then normal exterior conditions if you use a photobioreactor. Think glass tubes that suspend algae in moving water and give more light on each side. They would be a triple powerhouse of food production, oxygen production, and carbon sequestration.
lol, you were probably watching Pokémon the last time this article made the rounds. This is old stuff writers keep rehashing every 10 to 15 years. When I was a kid they promised by the mid 1990’s all cars would run off of bio fuel made from algae grown in huge glass tubes. It wasn’t new then either.
@@williambrandondavis6897 Biofuels in the 90's were being made with corn and didn't work out because they were taking up so much land any environmental gain would be moot. Algae while more efficient are still nowhere near as cheap as oil already in the ground which is why biofuels continue to fail. But he wasn't talking about fuel he was talking about using them for food and oxygen.

I thought about this for the entire month! Thanks for making this video. Algae plastic could be a game changer because it would not only reduce our emissions but also it would not use forever chemicals that are in pretty much every living being and it would be better for animals if this plastic was to end up in the ocean as opposed to conventional plastics. I hope the EU outlaws conventional plastics soon and makes algae plastics standard. There would only be advantages for both humankind and our environment in doing so.
Is it economic as well? Or has the potential to be in mass production?
History has shown that it's often a bad idea to outlaw one thing in favor of another. Take as an example electric vehicles, it sounds like a great idea at first glance, but it turns out that the electric grid (at least in Germany) simply can't handle more than one electric vehicle charging per street. It would be an absolute disaster if the government decided to make them a standard. While algae plastics sounds promising, legislating its use always comes with a risk.
It should definitely NOT be banned at least as long the algae plastic is only in biodegradable version. That's great for some uses (like packaging), but not for others (like construction) which needs to be durable.
I have fence and compost made from plastic, and the idea that those would rot like wood is appalling. I choose them specifically for their longevity.
@@tony16991 PHB is quite an easy bioplastic to make by bacterial fermentation as well. So yeah, we can make this stuff at large scale on land as well. The thing is, we have all these fancy petroleum based plastics that have very nice properties, and we like them to much to switch to one type of biodegradable plastic.
@@tony16991 People need to really stop to like put a price on things like, even if it is slightly expensive (which this does not sound at all) sounds like people does not want to try, like can you imagine if some government had a sick family members and he or she be like "How much does the treatment cost?" and after be like, no, do not give them then bcz that sounds expensive. Like, maybe you understand what meaning it has, people want to live or not is the question and this even helped in the great depression I think they said. That says it all. It helps!! That is what should only be relevant and yeah, sounds pretty affordable to me, if it is not controlled by sick Greedy people then it be good, bye.
All of my life, science teachers told me that algae was bad. Now I wonder what the heck, thank you DW for shedding light onto this matter
Exactly. I can not remember what I learnt about it actually, but somehow it seems to be similar, but like I said I can not even remember. It also depends on the teachers I guess. Barely remember my school days. Even if it was not thaaat long ago. Point is, many "teachers" are useless, some does not want the kids to even learn I bet. They just there for Other reasons that I have no idea about. Some though I know why they there, looking for easy prey, so. They need sane teachers. Sustainability is important. Vital.

Thanks for the video that was great! Algae aquaculture truly needs to be put in the spotlight. Perhaps you could have talked about algae bioremediation as well, a way to clean wastewater with algae and capture waste nutrients before it reaches the ocean, to produce biomass and cleaner water, then return algae back to land to grow food and other bioproducts. Doing so at scale could fix the world's most important problem which is the pollution of our air and oceans.
Along with making buildings out of mass-timber, this is an area of climate action I'm deeply passionate about. I'm so happy to see this taking off.

@@BALSCOU It doesn't change the problem. Over 70% of farmland in the US is used for growing cattle feed. By using microalgae and seaweed, there is no need for that farmland anymore. With sustainable forests planted instead, it completely negates the emissions of concrete and steel need for conventional buildings.

6:21 When the algae die, I imagine that they disintegrate and release the captured CO2 again. Wouldn't it be better to harvest the algae before they die and transform them into something useful before releasing the CO2 back into the ocean and atmosphere?
Yes, perhaps if you buried the algae deep underground or undersea and waited a few million years, the great pressure and geothermal heat would decompose the cell walls and help the hydrocarbons to separate from the water. Later you'd have to pump out the combustible part of the mixture, and the gases generated through the whole process, and you'd burn them for energy.
I think if the algae die and sink to the ground, they will in time form sediment which captures the CO2. A similar thing is happening for mosses in swamps. The carbon gets sequestered for hundreds of years, unless some human comes along and removes the water and the peat, then it will be all released at once🤪

I am pursuing MSc in Biotechnology at Madurai Kamaraj University. I am also working on an algae project to produce a low-cost high-value product for agriculture. Same as the problem you mention, In India government also spent money to remove macro and microalgae but the high nutrition value we can use as for production of high value.

I not only liked your video, I loved it. Made me think of a young congress member mentioned getting rid of the farting cows. But we might need more. Alan Savory is working on holistic land management where livestock helps the soil and the growth of grasslands and food crops. Using algae for fertilizer and plastics looks very good. We can do things better. Why do we not hear more about this?
All the sargassum problems in the Gulf of Mexico originated after the BP oil spill in the Gulf in 2010.
British Petroleum dissolved how the oil looked on the surface but the macronutrients and the other oil constituents and byproducts remain abundantly there.

You missed out on mentioning that feeding seaweed to livestock has mostly been a failure due to gsatrointestinal issues that the cattle experience
Where's your proof that that is the case here?
Note that this particular study uses a particular species of seaweed and they only supplement the cattle's regular feed with it - not feed the cattle seaweed exclusively.
@@tjslam26 anything you eat will eventually come out in the form of poop though, so feeding the cow algae won't make the carbon it capture magically disappear, it just get transformed. That's why combating global warming is hard, because we're literally taking oil/coal from deep underground and burning them for energy, thus releasing carbon to the atmosphere.

I think you can grow algae really easily by taking a bowl, cup, container or whatever, fill it with freshwater (drinking water) and leave it outside it indirect sunlight. Take some detritus (dead leaves and such) and put a few in, and in a few days you might see some algae!

What they didnt tell you is that oxygen was toxic for the organisms back then and because of the advantage these beings had with photosyntesis, they were the reason for the first mass extinction

Instead of utilizing sargassum for carbon sequestration by bailing it and sinking it to the ocean floor, I believe that it could be better utilized via the process of hydrothermal carbonization which provides many alternative uses such as displacing fossil fuel in cement cintering as well as being able to use the biochar product to displace sand and cement in concrete for long term sequestration.
I never knew me loving seaweed snacks and food is saving the world. Now seaweed taste even better.
