  • Another lovely lesson out in the paddock! I started off on Herbie, warmed up in the school, and then popped a few fences out in the field - he felt super and we had the best rhythm we've had so far while jumping, it felt like something clicked a bit between us and I finally worked out what I needed to do to ride him more effectively 😊 Halfway through the lesson I swapped onto Callie as he was being a bit naughty, and after a sticky start, he also went really nicely and overall it was probably the nicest I've personally felt him out in the paddock! I swapped back onto Herbie at the end just so that Callie's original rider could take him over a jump a couple more times.
    Just a note on the growling/vocalisations when riding Callie as I know people have a lot of feelings about it - you guys know I think the whip can be a perfectly valid training tool when used correctly and I do use mine when I believe it’s necessary, but in a lot of cases I would much rather try my voice first than immediately resort to using the stick (I also know from experience that being vocal works particularly well on Callie compared to other ponies, and because of this I didn’t have to use the stick at all on Callie in this lesson). I got on Callie in the first instance because he was being naughty and refusing the jumps with his rider, and so it was my 'job' to make him go over everything, hence why I was being quite strong with him. By the end of the lesson he settled down and actually started enjoying himself over the last few fences (and got lots of praise when he did a good job)!
    Also please ignore Herbie's scabby face 🙈 - he caught it on something in the barn where he has recently moved from a stable and got a bit of a scrape, and so has cream all over it - it looks worse than it is fortunately 😊
    Question of the day: Who would you rather ride, Herbie or Callie? And why?
    Ponies/horses:
    Herbie - 16.1hh bay gelding
    Callie - approx 14.3hh dark bay gelding

    I'd love to ride Herbie, but seeing that I only ever ride Iceland Ponys I would probably be horrible 😂
    I am also very vocal when riding, both with naughty and nice Ponys, because I find mostly all of them are pretty responsive to a good growl :D

    Sitting back slightly and sitting deeper in the saddle, and really using your seat to encourage him to keep going forward to the jumps, to encourage him to that way to using stronger, constant leg pressure, using your voice to make sounds the horse understands are serious, intense, encouraging, etc...these are a few ways to convey to a horse that yes, you mean business, you do really want them to jump that fence, and no, you're not going to let up until they do what you're asking them to, and then as soon as they do it, letting up, and rewarding them immediately by using your voice in a way you know they really like, touching them in a way that they really like, going on to do something you know they really enjoy doing, etc...is all it takes to get a horse to do something and to learn that doing it when you ask them to is the way to go, because they always like where they end up whenever they do so. All animals respond positively to things they like, including humans. Kindness, caring, appreciation, respect, all these things go far with other living creatures, and we would do well to learn this before or instead of learning how to use something that causes fear, pain, intimidation, etc...to get what we want regardless of the fact that these are negative things, and potentially, become even more so down the line, because it requires little effort and no skill on our part, and therefore, it's easy, the response we get is typically immediate, and often seems like what we want a horse to do although it occurs for negative reasons that can have even more negative ramifications down the line.
    I think it's wonderful that you used your voice, because you know it works particularly well with Callie, and stronger, more constant leg before doing anything else, such as using a crop on Callie, to get him to jump every fence you asked him to. He figured out very quickly that you meant business AND that he was rewarded for doing what you asked him to do.

      Lauren McLain Thank you, I really appreciate your comment. It’s very easy to judge people’s techniques around horses, as everyone rides differently, and it’s especially easy to forget while flicking through UA-cam videos that the horses aren’t clones of each other. There are some horses I just wouldn’t bother using my voice with as it would be pointless, I would try something else I’ve found works instead. As you say, they each get their ‘special treatment’, whatever that may be, followed by a pat/scratch/‘good boy’/canter/whatever else they like as reward when they get it right :-)

    I would ride Herbie because I would probably squish Callie. I went to Nunney International Horse Trials today and I got to see Mary King compete in the showjumping! (There was Showjumping, cross country and Dressage going on) William Fox-Pitt was there too! But unfortunately i didn't realise his name was in the programme to compete today until I got home, and we left after the class before his finished.
    Once again an amazing video! Keep up the good work and amazing riding! 💖

    I‘d rather ride Herbie because i like horses who are a little bit faster and Callie seems incredibly chill and rather slow😂 Btw my own horse is a gelding named Callie🙆🏻‍♀️ But he‘s a few hands taller than the one you’re riding😁 But he’s also a bay, even though a little bit lighter in his coat color and overall more excited to jump (most of the times he gets overexcited and just starts to go through the course at full speed, but we‘re working on it)🤗 I really enjoy your videos and you‘re so kind to the ponies!☺️❤️

  • @sue-jd5bo
    @sue-jd5bo 6 років тому

    I'm sorry I just had to say that you make them canter almost right before they jump the jump which seems pretty difficult for them to do. I recommend starting up the canter earlier and before the horse sees the jump. That way you just think about maintaining a canter and getting them over the jump instead of worrying about getting a canter and getting them over the jump. The first horse you rode you rode very well though. Good job.

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  6 років тому +3

      sue1109 I cantered in plenty of time to all of these jumps given the fence height and experience of the horses, however I was not letting either of them canter down the hill or round the tight corners to stop them slipping on the longer grass, which is why I don’t give them a ‘run up’ to some of the jumps in canter. The first horse is an incredibly experienced ex eventer and knows his job well enough to pick his own stride and canter where he thinks is appropriate in front of the fence, even if you actually ask him to canter much earlier (which happened a couple of times here). The second horse has such a short stride that he can easily get himself out of trouble if we happened to be on a bad canter stride in front of the fence, but as he has a habit of bolting you round in the canter and then running out, and it was my ‘job’ to get him over every jump this lesson, I wanted to make sure I was lined up to each fence steadily and correctly before asking the horse to jump it. :-)
