- Bbbbrrrrrrrr!!! It was a bit chilly in this lesson to say the least! Fortunately it was just frost on the surface of the arena, not ice, so we could still ride on it and it broke up quickly underfoot. We just stuck to walk and trot to be on the safe side, but it gave us a great opportunity to practice some more advanced pole work! I know this video is super long, but I really wanted you to see how we built up slowly, making the exercise slightly more difficult with each go until it became one longer complex exercise comprising of flat poles, straight cavaletti, cavaletti on a curve, all with lots of walk transitions thrown in for good measure! The point of the walk transitions before & in between the sets of poles was to both keep the horses listening to us to stop them trying to rush through, and to really get them into a collected, bouncy/powerful trot before tackling the more tricky raised poles to encourage them to lift themselves a bit more. Magic coped so well with everything and the fact we built up so slowly meant that he didn’t get rushy at any point, which is his go-to when he finds something hard and just wants to get it over with. The cavaletti/raised poles on a curve is a very technical and complex exercise for the horses as it really makes them have to engage their core & hind end to lift their legs high enough, whilst maintaining momentum, rhythm and bend through the curving line. Considering this time last year Magic couldn’t do even basic trot poles without trying to canter through them, and point blank refused to do walk transitions before/after them, I think it’s fair to say he’s really starting to get the hang of this more technical sort of thing now! The fact he now has the strength to even attempt this type of work shows how far he has come and how much he has changed for the better, both physically & mentally. Not gonna lie, I felt so proud of him after this lesson because it’s so lovely to ride a horse who really tries his best, even when they’re finding it hard and not necessarily naturally built for this kind of fancy-pants schooling! 😄

She definitely is! She's the yard manager and only usually teaches a few private lessons and clinics, but she was covering for our usual instructor on this day. All the instructors I have just want the riders & horses to do well and enjoy themselves, which I love!

I honestly look up to u for when I ride! I’ve learnt to be more talkative while I ride and to build a bond with the horse even when I’m riding and grooming them. I watched u before I even started doing riding lessons and I am now doing riding lessons. 💗

Weather's much milder here in Lincolnshire! Just a bit of cloud and a bit windy. I was also practicing some pole work today with my new loan pony, although much more basic. I think she's about where Magic was last year. I had set out some normal trot poles, extended trot poles and some canter poles and it was all so very exciting! Yesterday we could barely stay out of canter and charged round the school many times before we could concentrate enough to trot over the poles. Today we tried again and our brakes were slightly more functional, but still trying to rush everything at 100mph. I love how much she enjoys her work but any tips on getting her to relax and concentrate a bit more?!

I rode Painter on tuesday so we just trotted and walked which was fine by me, I go at the horses pace or my instructors pace or my pace depending on who I’m riding. Though tuesday I got into the building where the indoor arena is to find no horse other than a little pony far too small for me. My instructor came out of the indoor arena and asked me and my carer/friend where my horse was, I said well I was wondering the same thing so she went to find out, she found my horse tacked up with one thing missing, stirrups so she had to sort that out too. Turns out there we’re not allowed to ride stirrupless.
