3T Strada Due: A yearlong review over Belgian cobbles, Italian gravel and Colorado dirt.

- Road racing and gravel are colliding, and the 3T Strada Due suits the racer with a broad definition of ‘road’. Ben Delaney enjoyed piloting this aero-meets-wide bike in Colorado and Belgium and Italy over the past 12 months, from riding the actual cobbled Koppenberg in the Flanders sportive to racing Colorado’s dirt Koppenberg, a favorite local event. He raced it in criteriums and brought it along for a memorable week in the Dolomites that ended in the hospital. (Doh!) It’s a special bike that he recommends with only a few caveats.
Delaney also weighs in on his experiences with the SRAM Red eTap AXS group over 12 months, on various surfaces, and through exhausting a number of batteries.
biggest loss to Bike Radar and best bike reviewer on UA-cam! keep it up BD
Thank you, Alexander.
Thank you, Ben, for the virtual commiseration, the great cycling content, the bike porn, and the perspective. I'll probably never buy this bike, but just happy for the content and hope that you are recovering well.
Thanks!
Mr. Dalaney, are you alright? Did you have to be hospitalized with the cracked pelvis?
Still, thanks for the excellent review.
All good now, thanks. I did get to enjoy the hospitality and food of an Italian hospital. :-)
Great review, Ben. 3T makes great bikes but a little out of my budget. I appreciate the trickle-down of the technology or adoption by other manufacturers of aero on gravel bikes, especially when lots of the riding is sola or on faster pavement to reach gravel.
So with the coin cell batteries in the shifters - how do you know when it's time to change them? Certainly not when they run out I hope!
great review... just traded in a De rosa.. for a 3T due at Pros closet.. 5600k so.. good deall thik 3T dumped a whole bunch of bikes and PC bought them seemingly bc they have alot of these well.. less now..
Great in depth review.👍
However I do understand you can't feel the speed of an aerobike when you mount such a big bag on the cockpit. All the aero gain are lost
😁
The moment I saw Ben I was happy to stay. I remember his funny review on the lauf true grit. Don’t lauf at my fork 😂
Nice review, but you should have mentioned that on the red axs powermeter crankset that the chainrings are not replaceable once they're worn down. You literally have to throw away a perfectly good crankset and buy a new one. Blows my mind that they went this route...
You can reuse the crankarms, but the powermeter/spider does have to be replaced which I agree is quite dumb. Sram offers a 50% off trade-in for owners, but at $400 is still pretty steep for a set of chainrings.
Really nice review. I borrowed a 3T 1 x 12 last year and was very impressed with the bike. Yes, the 1 x 12 is a bit limiting so the Duo is going to be better for sure. Next to my Cannondale Supersix Evo Team, the 3T is nearly as fast over my 30-mile road course which includes about 1200 feet of climbing.
So good the aero bike is slower than your supersix ? New supersix or old?
@@brody5211 Previous model. It's about 3 years old. I've not owned or ridden a bike as good and I have owned and ridden a lot of bikes including some custom frame hand build made to measure bikes. Almost as comfortable to ride as the Synapse, but significantly better in every other area of performance.
Seat clamp on the Strada was the biggest weakness , well known to vroom and all at 3T. . It’s essentially a piece of crap that should never have been released, continually tilts down... The bike itself is pretty cool though
Nice review Ben. Actually am considering a Strada at the moment. It would´ve been interesting to have seen a close-up of the tyre clearance when you had it fitted with those 28mm Schwalbes which plumped up to 33mm. If anything I feel like the roadbike sector is turning towards even wider tyres, the Strada might not have enough tyre clearance for, say, nominally 30 or 32 mm rubber. That was a large size Strada, how high was the saddle set at if you don´t mind me asking? Trying to gauge if a M or L would fit me better.
#VeloNews , @velonews, I would also like to understand for fit and purchase what the bike size was and the saddle height from bb...please? ;-)
Size large, 76cm saddle height. Full review here: www.velonews.com/gear/road-gear/3t-strada-due-review/
VeloNews Thanks, I too sit at 76cm
Thanks for the review! I was looking at a 2020 3T on Pro Closet and ended up buying it after seeing your review.
How do you like it I am looking at one now
@@xavierbrown6289 love it. You won’t regret buying this wonderful bike.
@@TheChaznw how’s your seat post clamp tilt ?
@@brody5211 I broke he original seat post clamp and had to order a new one from their office in Canada. You have to follow the UA-cam video closely when installing the clamp. It has been a year or so now without any problems.
@@TheChaznw yeah it’s a piece of crap - a deal breaker for many . There is a new one out that uses a ritchey clamp
Great review Ben, I like the idea of an aero frame with road focus but with off tarmac ability. What tyres would you recommend for dust gravel on the Strada?
BTW i live in Estes PArk.. Ill take this one on old Fall river rd .. after the tourists are gone... sept./oct
one word of warning about the batteries. I had some health issues and then only rode my gravel bike for a couple of months. So, my road bike sat for about three months. I fully charged the batteries after I rode it last but when I rode my road bike for the first time in a while, the rear battery went dead very shortly into my ride. I did move the front battery to the rear and left it in the small ring. So, the battery can die just sitting on the bike. After that, I do make a point to check the battery level before rides.
This bike is NOT avail in rim brake right?
Nope
@@brody5211 That sucks like a Dyson
this guy could sell you sand in the desert
What is the curb weight of the bike?
Thanks for the review. Any practical use for the cage mount on the seat post? Can a bottle fit there for adventure days without rubbing legs?
Thanks for watching it. You know, I never tried putting a bottle cage on the post, but in recent weeks I have used rear-mounted cages for long days without stopping. It can't hurt!
I run eThirteen 9-44t on the rear, and a 44T xsync chainring on my 2018 Felt VR4, I love the 9 tooth.
A well done card is on the way lad
One of these is not like the others. Who cares about colorado dirt or american cycling
Watch your tongue. Colorado dirt is amazing, and there's a reason why so many WorldTour cyclists have made Boulder, CO their homes. You can't ride up to 14000ft elevation on pavement anywhere in Europe. Euro-snobbery like yours is one of the reasons I quit road riding/racing.
Thanks for your display of ignorance for everyone too see. We know what you are now. Cheers.
Did that sound clever in your head?
