Doug was referencing Jem & the Holograms. Literally the worst adaptation of a movie from an 80's cartoon. So much so, that it was pulled from theaters in *TWO WEEKS*. Doug reviewed it and I highly recommend his review
If you're confused by the ending musical number, it's their parody of the _"Girls/Boys of Rock'n'Roll"_ musical number from that animated _Chipmunks Adventure_ movie they kept referencing throughout the review.
14:53 Jem & the Holograms is a 2015 movie based the 80s cartoon of the same name. It’s hated by critics & fans. Hated by fans for being such an unfaithful adaptation & hated by critics for being a bland by-the-numbers drama. It had a 5 million dollar budget & it didn’t even make half of back in the box office (2.3 million). NC made a review of it & it’s definitely worth watching over the movie.
I definitely think of the 1987 movie, as well Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein/The Wolfman. I recommend Nostalgia Critic retrospectives on Fox Kids, Disney Afternoon and Toonami. Also his review of Superman Returns and his tribute to Siskel and Ebert.
There's some amusing irony with a single line from the Real Chipmunks Movie song. Yes, there ARE sequels to the animated Chipmunks movie; Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein and Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet The Wolfman. No, I'm not kidding. Those are movies that do exist. So when that line "where's YOUR sequels?" comes up in the song, the answer is, "Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein and Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet The Wolfman". The line's meant to be a "ha. We have sequels, you don't" kinda gotcha, but falls flat immediately if someone hearing that knows of the 2 sequels. Granted, the CGI Chipmunks do have 1 more sequel than the animated versions, but that's not what the line was meant to be a "gotcha" for.
So, Duck has begun his journey of NC’s squeekaga (hey, it’s no better than the pun-related titles the sequels have). Also yes, one of the movies was released alongside the newest Star Wars film of the time, and since there hasn’t been a sequel since then, even after Disney bought Fox, I’ll let you interpret how well it did at the box office.
Ya know, I actually find the first one to be a fun movie and it brings me fond memories due to me seeing it with my mom and brother in theaters. Also there were cartoon Alvin and the chipmunks movies that were honestly entertaining and better than the live action movies even having some pretty good songs
All the alvin chipmunks movies except the animated one from the awsome 1980s is the best on the live action ones are direa puke ear bleeding bad extremly bad.
It cracks me up every time i see that clip from Troll 2. OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! Watching that again really made my day. Thank you duckgoesmoo and Nostalgia Critic!
14:52 Reference to Jem and the Holograms. A movie adaptation of an 80's cartoon that pissed of fans, and had backlash just as bad as DB Evolution and Last Airbender. Possible bigger cause it was pulled from Cinema'sin just two weeks. Highly recommend Critic's review. - Also recommend the Fantastic Four reviews. (Or Fant4stic as the reboot likes to be titled) And see how badly they screw up Dr Doom - The other 2 with Critic are Rob Scallon (blue) who's has appeared in other reviews and even wrote some songs. yeah~ the girl he mentioned he did a co-review on the OG movie was the now retired reviewer and LOONG retired of her old internet name "Nostalgia Chick", Lindsay Ellis. she did use to do reactions on her own time and mainly talking about literature and looking deep into movies, both good and bad. the only reason she became Nostalgia Chick was due to a contest for Doug to find a foil and gender counterpart to review the more "girly shows/movies" of the past. personally i think she's pretty good as a reactor. she's just had a LOT of drama but that's not the point.
When visiting some relatives, I saw the younger kids watching an animated show based on these movies, and to be reminded of how annoying it was, was... something else.
Alvin and the Chipmunks has a such a rich history believe it or not. They were created by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958, had a cartoon The Alvin Show in 1961, then a series in 1983 starring his son Ross Jr. and his wife Janice Karmen as the voices of the Chipmunks, Chipettes and Dave, and currently a Nickelodeon series on at the moment with Ross and Janice reprising their roles with involvement from thieir kids Michael and Vanessa. It's a family business. The shows are worth a watch in my opinion. These movies are my guilty pleasure as a huge Chipmunks fan.
When I think of Alvin & the Chipmunks it probably the cg movies since I know people will know them for the modern day. I do think of the 2d shows and movies generally, though I grew up with those cg movies actually. Well, no matter what generation, I've always thought their songs were a creative, harmless idea. This video just makes me laugh..

There were probably at least into the teens of the “original chipmunks” movies, if not into the twenties, they did a lot of adventures, crossovers, retold stories and such. Plus they had… i think 3 separate tv show runs? Sadly the modern version was just so much more visually in your face and was so much more spread due to modern advertising and such that many people forget the original one was ever a thing unless they grew up with it.
Nah, when I think of the chipmunks I think of the old cartoon version. Now when I hear "Squeakual" (or however it's spelled) that when I think of the CGI furballs then I cringe. But no, the cartoon movie the Critic showed isn't the only one, there are quite a few and are better than the CGI furballs.
At the beginning you might be referring to terribly made Nightcore "remixes" of songs where all they would do is speed songs up. A real Nightcore remix has the higher pitched voice, with the song remaining the same tempo, but with usually an added EDM beat added into it to turn it into an actual remix. But yes, very similar in concept to the way old Alvin and the chipmunks versions were made, so easy to mix it up.
