Phil May, frontman of riotous band the Pretty Things who were acclaimed peers of David Bowie and the Rolling Stones, has died aged 75.
He died in hospital in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, from complications following hip surgery after a cycling accident, that are not related to coronavirus.
Born in Dartford, Kent, May formed the Pretty Things in 1963 with guitarist Dick Taylor, who had recently left the nascent Rolling Stones. The band’s lineup coalesced with John Stax, Brian Pendleton and Viv Andrews, with May as frontman.
The Pretty Things are an English rockband who started in 1963 in Londen by singer Phil May and guitarist Dick Taylor. The greatest success came in November 1964 when 'Don't bring me down' entered the Top 10 in England. The self-written 'Honey I need' did a little less at the beginning of 1965, but in March of that year The Pretty Things were the stars of the Blokker festival on the AVRO TV . Their Dutch record company Phonogram Records released Bo Diddley's 'Road Runner' from the first LP and that became the best-known song of the Pretty Things in the Netherlands. The band made a smashing impression on the Dutch beat musicians and they had a major influence on the origin of the 'Nederbeat'.
This unique recording was made at that 'Beat From Blokker' TV performance of the Pretty Things, their first gig in Hollland.
It was broadcast live on 19 April 1965.
In November 2018 the Pretty Things did their farewell tour in Holland.

Great 60's band, the rougher they got the better they sounded.

Great amalgam of Stones, Yardbirds and Beano Blues breakers!

This has been very cleverly dubbed. It's the record we're hearing.
Are you in the habbit of kicking in open doors ? 👍🥴

Very good times 60
This is the studio recording.
I'm the son of Brian Pendleton and I had no idea that Phil May had passed away.
Since your dad hung with him, did Bob Dylan talk about The Pretty Things? Is there a reason he name dropped them in Tombstone Blues?
I was told I could have a beer with Brian in a Maidstone boozer being a big Pretty Things fan since the early days, would be arranged through a mate who used the pub but told Brian wasn't well...sad to say it never happened & Brian was gone..RIP Brian
Your dads a legend phil RIP phil may, brian pendleton, pete tolson & jon povey.
I'm really sorry he did. This was their second best tune after "Roadrunner".
@@finslaw My mother's father Douglas Bell, or "Da Bell" as we called him, served in the Eighth Army during World War II leading Montgomery's march across North Africa. And throughout the rest of his life he would rarely speak about his time abroad fighting for his country. I mention this because my father was exactly the same. Just like my grandfather he would rarely, if ever, talk about his life as a famous musician.
Bowie did a cover of this on "Pin Ups" which I heard in 1973 or so.
Original meathead band - loved to wreck hotel rooms - bring 'em back!
Bowies version off Pin Ups is great
FAB :)
What a great channel ☀️😀☀️
Get doon Holland lads and lassies! nice!
"I need a lover, someone new, and then to HIM I will be true" followed be a cheeky laugh. October 1964. Was this the first lyric in rock music from a gay POV? And with David Bowie taking notes front row, covering the song and considering Phil May "God." Birth of glam!!!
Good quality edit this.....

Phil May.....never forgotten !
👍
Better than Bowie
I met this chick....the other day..........
Oh c'mon. No difference than the Flaming Groovies just different guys
Slight difference ,during this performance the Goofies were still at highschool ? and unlike the Groovies ,this bunch had charisma to spare.
