i grab cookie sheets and other steel / aluminum cookware ect from the goodwill . Old dvr , home theater electronic, metal boxes for a dollar or two apiece as well, good metal, sometimes they are already the right size for projects. And im not to good to pull a TV or a appliance from a dumpster for the parts or sheet metal, for home projects either. lol. Refrigerators , microwaves r great sources for thin workable sheet metal . I gotr a bender from Harbor freight ...
Good show, nice RV! I like the reasoning behind the use of the mag mount - but I'm a little skeptical that you're meeting that goal given the direction of the coax to the mount and the current amount (or lack) of slack in the coax run. If you hit something (driving forward), I think the mount would just slide a bit, taking up what little slack there is... and not fall over. Just my engineer-calibrated eye's opinion. You're good to go when driving in reverse though! - Gary KC3PO Love your shows, keep it up... and bring on the female(s)!
Hi thinking about doing this also afraid of drilling a hole in the roof . Unless you could tell me it worked very well and was worth doing with a plate on the roof. Looking Forward to hearing back from you thank you.
what mount the base of the 5100 under the floor next to the electrical connections, and just run the face / control panel into the cab? that would be pretty awesome.
Bob - about to try a similar installation on my coach. What is the approximate size of the steel ground plate, and what VSWR does it deliver? Tanks, Chris KL4C
Hi Bob, I did something similar a couple years back on a van. How did you ground your ground plane sheet electrically to your common point ground? Was there a ground wire or strap I missed? Or is that in the future episode? 73
Hi why on the roof? I've got a 1999 Beaver pusher and have the IC-5100 but was thinking of using my driver and passenger mirrors with 2meter antenna on the drivers side and the 440 on the passenger side. Also I'm going to put a screwdriver antenna with a motorized lift which I can put it down when on the road and up when stopped. Rick N1HID
Why not just take a thin piece of steel (1/8") that is 12" x 12" and VHB tape it to your roof. Then just stick the magnetic antenna to it? Way better than drilling holes in the roof of your motor home. This is how I have my solar panels mounted and they have stayed in place for 2 yrs now with no sign of letting go.
Bob on your plastics use 303 protectent amzn.to/2pK7goK , its like sunscreen for plastic. It also can restore the plastic will keep it from cracking, awesome stuff. Also how was the SWR on the mag-mount? did you calculate the size of the ground plane as it is the other half of the antenna? 73!

Years ago I did the same on my RV for GPS and XMradio. My HF ham antenna is off the ladder with a Flagg pole mount. Very easy to take it off and on.
I've used that exact antenna for years on the mirror brackets of semi trucks. They are great and perform well wit very little ground plane.

Have been thinking about doing this to my TJ wrangler.

It works great still up there and going strong.

Thats kinda a cool idea.
lol, had not seen episode 50 yet, the way u ended up doing it was better, better enviroment , temp wise for the radio. Thanks for your videos bob.
Where did you get the square plastic piece that seals the hole through the roof?
We made it.

I made a 1 ft square plate. you can use an antenna that doesn't require and external ground plane.
A 2 m 440 quarter wave Hustler antenna mag mount stuck to a baking pan that's one thought

+yucaipaham no electrical ground. From everything I've heard it doesn't need it.
It does
How was the SWR?
SWR is fine. The Mag mount is isolated from the antenna.
You could have just used a big strong magnet on the underside.

Because it needs to be invisible to my wife.
Ok you need to get her licensed
No SWR test to see if you have a good signal at UHF and VHF frequency? Lets see what the results are.
once I get the radio in place, I'll cut the coax to length, put a PL259 on it and test it. Everything got be fitted and hidden first.

OOPS, forgot the important part, don't you already have a TV antenna on your roof? IF you do run the coax with it instead of drilling another hole.
Iuse the same ant on my file cabinet in my office its worth it kg6mn

How much did that "free ground plane" cost you?......LOL
+NWHiker it doesn't leak so it doesn't matter.
Walmart? just go to the scrap yard for peat sake
or that. Around here, walmarts closer and probably cheaper.
