I was thinking monsters from the Id, as per Forbidden Planet. You killed us all off so now all that negative psychic energy is left hungry. And these xeno are on the menu.
This seems like it could be a prequel to a story Agro narrated years ago, about our nightmares coming to a truce with humanity in the stars, they each protect a child and now hunt the ones who would harm humanity's children.
@disneyminus511 I don't remember the name, but it occasionally plays on the radio. It's about pirates who go for the children, and find out they're protected by nightmares.
There’s also one about the denizens of the dark doing the same once humanity was glassed. The vampires, fae, etc needing to move planets and act on their revenge.
Well, that's certainly an interpretation of the things that go bump in the night. I've seen a few stories about the humans experiencing an apocalypse and the things that feed off humanity having to actively protect the remaining fragments in order to actually continue to feed and live, like vampires.

Not exactly. We were the better food source for these demons because of our emotions were strong. They didn't even have to kill for a millenia to be satisfied. But since these aliens killed so many people, they're favorite food source, is gone and must re-populate. In the meantime, these aliens will due and since their essence is weaker, it will take many of them to satisfy the demons. Not to mention since they're weaker, they will die because of it.
Stories like this that bring old world fantasies into the space age are some of my favorites. We get to much "Gods are real blah blah blah" stories can be fun in Sci-fi but they never get the same impact as our monsters being our guardians and that is thanks to our deeper connection to those monsters, only "gods" that ever seem to have the same feel are Gaia(which is insane half the time) or death.
It's not even that the aliens are more tasty. We're just too valuable to risk hunting to extinction, so they'll hunt everything else until we can get our numbers back up.

And just like that, the monster Under my bed, and in my closet are my best friends. Except for the sleep paralysis demon, that one's still kind of scary. We're on Uneven terms.
Sleep Paralysis is a definite MF for sure! I am older, and no one knew what that was when I was growing up. I was often told it was wandering spirits who found me as I was "sensitive" to them...that just freaked me out more!! Luckily I only have a few episodes a year now!
I like it. If you fear humans, what do you make of what humans fear? What do you do with what gives us nightmares? If we're the space orcs, then the spectres of our fears are dreadwraiths.
The monsters from our darkest nightmares, fed just by being near us, kept passive by our dark creativity and proximity. You disturbed the food chain. Nothing is quite so terrifying as a ravenous, unstoppable monster. Good Luck.
Dear me, so humanity in this case is bad-ass in a completely different way: so potent emotionally that all the Boogy-Men and Ghouls of the Universe had come HERE to feed, mostly without needing to kill us to do so! And our near extinction means that long forgotten shadows and horrors, demons of the dark, the Bump In The Night... well... the Shadows now have to use their Teeth again. Don't mess with humans. We're good for something in all stories... even if it's only by unknowingly holding closed the very gates of hell!
You know, these are really good stories. Have/has anyone realized that some of these stories, even though written by different authors, they kinda fit into this vast galactic story. Has anyone thought about doing that.
I remember a short story. Your atomic fires burned the stakes from our hearts . They knew how to handle us. You bred out all traces of superstition from your people.
I love your voice and wish you narrated some of the other audiobooks i have listened to, or tried to because some i could not get through no matter how long i waited for them to be narrated :/
Ah yeah took few seconds but yeah figured out it was some sort if supernatural beings doing the killing. Another great story of human's monsters attacking xenos. I remember another of vampires and werewolfs fighting xenos.. and another of a vampire waking up in the cargo hold of a spaceship. But ah what kinda supernatural being was that??? One that can possess and animate recent dead. Also converse in the native language of the xenos??
