I have never heard of them before, but I think it’s very interesting watching your videos
Glad you like them!
What a fantastic item to have on display. The grand children would love it. I should make one and place it on the table at my market booth. It might draw people in....maybe a way to make extra money on slow days...lol
Great videos. Love the project. Great result.
Thank you, Noel! Happy Turning!
awesome project! I will not be making one, ha ha That's a lot! But that's for the inspiration!
In the Mall atrium between K-mart and JC Penney back in the day, the Red Cross had a monster coin funnel. So fun to watch this project and remember those days.
Yup, there you go. That's sounds familiar. Small world. Wonder where all those funnels are today. Happy Turning!
I need a non-stop 6 hours coin sping video
The vase is absolutely beautiful. I have never been able to justify to use of resin in my work. Wood is such an environmentally sound choice if harvested responsibly but plastic is its polar opposite. Watching your channel has convinced me to purchase a Record Power Regent. Taking my old Grizzly to my son-in-law and picking up the new machine in a couple weeks. Good luck on your move.
I vividly remember those big coin funnels! The ones in my area were made of yellow plastic and were at least 3 feet across. Big enough that kids couldn't just reach over and try to fish coins out through the hole.
Yup, Miles, yellow and huge. lol All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you for a gift idea for my niece, I will use marbles instead of coins for sanitary reasons. Also turn a bowl to catch the marbles in after they go through the funnel.
That's awesome, Kent. I'm impressed.
I appreciate that. Thank you, Archie! Happy Turning!
Even though you used a couple of machines (lathe and drill), it's still hand precision. Impressive.
nicely done Congrats ✌
Wow fantastic. There was a coin funnel in the Abram's planetarium on the campus of Michigan State University back in the mid 90's. Thanks Kent
Great job Kent. What a project to under take. I remember there being a coin funnel at the old dollar store downtown back in the '60s.
Great idea Kent and well executed, I have turned a few coin funnels, although truth be told, they were supposed to be bowls! 🙃 Jane ❤
Thank you for writing and sharing, Jane! We've all done that. ;)
I'm glad you carried on. It's such an amazing turning. Congratulations.
Kent that turned out awesome thanks for sharing it with us…..Now you just have to put together a little shindig and we can all come and send $10-$20 in coins down it and it will pay for the whole project and probably have a little left over to get yourself a little something nice lol……can’t wait to see what you do next Brother
Hi 👋, T A W B , you are going in to deep, 😂, Event Horizon. And never coming back out again, 😂, 🕳️, there was someone last year or the year before, that made a table out of segments, That looked like this it was amazing. It took him a long time to build., from the moulin,
Wow, hardwork finally paid off. The concentricity is crazy on your lathe.
Congratulations 🎊 👏 💐 on a big project, never seen one before, and never gonna make one tho. YET I picked up some tips,
Thank you for sharing and look forward to future videos.
Cheers 🍻

Kent, are you finally capitalising on your "Lost" character lookalike?? 🤣
Tremendous project. It's wild to see you experienced turners crack on with projects like this. I'm always scared when I put a large bowl blank on - like 10x4”. This was giant!
You can do it. Start small and practice, practice, practice. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
FUN!
U R incredible! 🤩
Thank you so much!! Happy Turning!
Very cool 2 parter - thanks for sharing your work with us
Glad you enjoyed it, Phil. Happy Turning!
Bravo, great videos on the Vortex Bowl!!!
Turned out awesome!!
❤well done!
Thank you, Audie! Happy Turning!
awesome job, how fun - and it worked!
Thank you, Mark 🤗 Happy Turning!
Great work.
Thank you, Brad! Cheers!
There is a big one at Hartville Kitchen in Hartville, Ohio
Thanks for another well produced, informative video. What are the design considerations for the shape of the funnel. Can you share and explain your design. Thanks.
Very cool! Where can i find the template? I dont have the graphing capability. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Ivan
Very cool!
Thank you, Victor! Happy Turning!
Nice. Curious, why choose the bowl gouge v a scraper for the very light shavings toward the end? I’m trying to learn, not questioning the decision
Good question, Vincent. The bowl gouge cuts and a scraper would rip out fibers. Happy Turning!
It's a neat project but I never accumulate coins. I give them to the street people I meet.
Awesome project! I always wondered about turning lumber. Now I know. Are you going to make a base for it?
Thank you, Ron! Not for now. It sits anywhere quite well. Happy Turning!
BRAVO Kent. An question: On the inside of the funnel i did not see you use a shear scrape with the swept back. Is there a reason you did not use that on those convex surfaces? Thanks.
The endgrain was tearing easily so I needed to make cleaner cuts with the gouge edge. Happy Turning!
We actually still see a lot of these in the UK normally for charity fundraising. Brilliant project absolutely love it
Andy, very cool. They are so fun, to have around. Thank you for writing and sharing! Happy Turning!

Very neat idea. If you ever want another large challenge/unique idea, I suggest a Battlefield Chessboard. It's a Chessboard with a non flat surface that you may or may not be able to find by googling in combination with "One of a Kime". It's something I developed and I normally powercarve the surface with an angle grinder to get the unique terrain but I think you could make a really cool one with a sort of raindrop on water terrain with a lathe. I'm not brave enough (and don't have a big enough lathe) to do it, but I think it would be a good one for you (I'd also just love to see my idea get out there some more).
Sounds very cool. Thank you for writing and sharing! Happy Turning!
I wish I could get the long "swept back" wings on my bowl gouge like you do. I have a Sorby Pro Edge. It only goes to 50 degrees, and the way it rotates, it only allows me wings half the length as yours.
You can do it! I cover exactly how in my Tool Sharpening course and I have a specific Pro Edge section. Check it out www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/sharp All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Hey Kent, thank for all of the videos. They've been immensely helpful in my journey to become a better wood turner. I do just want to point out one thing I've heard you mention a few times which doesn't seem strictly correct. You say that as you approach the center of the bowl, it's turning more slowly so you need to slow down the speed of your cut to compensate. While it's true that the wood is moving more slowly relative to the cutting tool, you are also cutting less wood. It is in fact exactly the same rpm no matter where you are on the bowl (as I'm sure everyone knows) but it seems like maintaining a consistent cutting speed whether you're out toward the edge of the bowl or toward the middle seems to make the most consistent cut. Actually, even when I watch your tool making the cut, you seem to have basically the exact same speed the entire way through, as when you're riding the bevel it just kind of dictates itself.
Thank you for writing and sharing! Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/qkAwPg-fPN8/v-deo.htmlsi=sjOHJSTlmT2KNnHl Happy Turning!
Kent, I just received an outrigger for my Nova Orion. I plan on making a 29inch bowl just for the experience. I plan on using the basic techniques you have showed here. What advice outside of what you have displayed in this video would you give me. Cheers!
Last place I ran into these was at Science based buildings. San Francisco, Seattle, Tokyo, and Arlington.
I really enjoy Kent's videos. His explanation makes all the difference. Instead of making us wonder what is happening, he TELLS us. That makes a lot of sense and helps us understand the project much better than the videos with no explanations.
Pretty neat project Kent.
That was freaking awesome
Amazing job. Not something I'll be doing any time soon but this was great to watch.
Thank you, Homer! Happy Turning!
Pretty cool
Awsome job
Now THIS was a Happy Turning! A truly nostalgic item from the not-so-long-ago past that brings back fun memories.
You did a great job on this project, Kent, and your explanation of what you were doing and why you were doing it that way is always so very educational.
As the Number 5 robot would say, "More Input"!😄😄😄😄😄🌳
Nice work. Way to take advantage of the full swing of your lathe. :)
Nice job Kent.
I wonder how many others on this platform are now gonna attempt this project.
