- This video is a narrated walking tour of the Secrets Akumal resort shot in late October 2017. This resort is located along the beautiful Akumal Bay of the Riviera Maya, in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico - about an hour south of Cancun. I used a GoPro Hero4 camera mounted to a Feiyu gimbal.

Comparing Secrets Brand to Excellence Resorts
We have stayed at two Excellence resorts (Excellence Riviera Cancun and Excellence Playa Mujeres) and four Secrets resorts (Secrets Capri, Secrets Marquis (a resort in Cabo that is no longer affiliated with the Secrets brand), Secrets Maroma Beach and Secrets Akumal). We tried to break away from these two brands a few trips back when we stayed at Iberostar Grand Paraiso. So, I think we have a pretty large sample size to compare the two brands. (NOTE: We have not stayed at VIM, so I cannot comment on what that resort is like).
We enjoy the higher end, adult-only, all-inclusive resorts - and both Secrets and Excellence brands fit that bill. We value our beach time, good food and decent entertainment - and each property varies in how well they deliver that experience.
I think the best testimonial to how we rate the properties is whether we would like to return for another visit. Our list of ‘return-to’ candidates in order is: 1) Excellence Riviera Cancun, 2) Secrets Maroma Beach 3) Excellence Playa Mujeres. and 4) Secrets Akumal.
I like ERC for the total package - the traditional Mexican architecture the building, my favorite swim-up bar / jacuzzi area of all of the resorts that we have stayed at and I remember how much fun we had partying with the other guests there (that is not really a fair way to judge a resort because the vibe/mood changes with the folks who are there at the same time - but I still recall that vacation with great fondness.) The downside of ERC are the balconies in the standard non-Club rooms - they are small and are sparsely furnished.
We both love the beach at Secrets Maroma. They are remodeling the rooms (the remodel started last year and I think they are due for completion sometime before the Fall this year). There is a different line-up of restaurants at Secrets vs. Excellence. Both of them are good in my opinion. I like a change-up, so I would like to not do two of the same brand back-to-back. I especially remember the outdoor bar at night time near the dart board, putt-putt, etc. at Secrets Maroma. There is a very cool swinging lounger that has our names on it that I cannot wait to return to. I guess the downside to Secrets Maroma is the price. I know it is worth shopping and changes based on the time of year, but I know that one day we will return.
EPM has the best rooms of the four resorts above. The balconies are very nice and comfortable. I believe the rooms are also larger that the other 3 properties. We loved the entertainment staff at EPM - probably our favorite group of staff at any of the other properties - they remembered our names after the first day - and we took part in many of the participation activities because of them.
Our Secrets Akumal vacation was our most recent trip to Mexico so I am not inclined to want to return there so soon. It is the farthest away from the airport. It has the prettiest beach of the four properties, but it is very much a public beach. The other three are more secluded resorts with not so easy access to the locals to spend time on the beach. So if you value your privacy and want a quiet beach experience without kids running around, you may want to skip Secrets Akumal.

Thank you, for your reply. We just came back from Secrets Akumal and were blown away with the service. I am Excited for a long weekend at ERC in the fall.
Are they strict on dress code for men? Do they allow short sleeve button down shirts, nice shorts and sandals?
Great video! Do you prefer Secrets Akumal over Secrets Maroma?
We enjoyed both properties, but I prefer Secrets Maroma. The beach at Maroma is more secluded that the Akumal beach. There are lots of locals at Akumal especially on the weekends because there is easy access for parking and walking in to the beach area. It seems like the Maroma beach is mostly used by guests of Secrets Maroma and other nearby resorts. In most respects the properties are nearly the same. Akumal is a newer property, but Secrets Maroma is going through room renovations (I think they are due to be 100% done during the off season later this year). We are planning a return to Secrets Maroma in the Spring of 2019. We also love the Excellence resorts and have booked ERC for the Spring of 2018 and will plan on a return visit to EPM in the late Fall of 2018.
We have been to Secrets Maroma six times and would really like to try Akumal, but I heard the beach is very crowded..... I guess we will be going back to Maroma again this year. : )

@@lukeg6859 It is frowned upon to listen to your own music without headphones/earbuds. I think the staff will ask you to turn off your music or place headphones on.
