How to Open Garage When Power is Out - Open and Close Garage Door Manually During Blackout

In this short video, I'll show you how to open your garage door when the power is out. It's really easy! Just find the red cord hanging down from the track. I'm sure you've noticed this here before. Just give it a firm pull straight down and the door will be disengaged from the motor. At this point find the aluminum handle at the bottom of the door and lift it up.
The door can feel heavy so definitely get some help if you're having trouble opening it. And just be aware that when it's open the door sits a bit lower than it normally would. So take a look before backing your vehicle out especially if it's a truck or SUV.
To close the garage when the power is out, just grab the handle and pull down. And only use the handle to avoid pinching your fingers in between the moving panels! When the power is back on just activate the motor and the door will automatically reattach to the motor trolley. That should solve your garage door problem when the power is out.
But what if the power goes out when the garage door is open? It's basically the same thing. Just locate the red cable hanging down from the track. Again pull straight down to detach the door from the motor. Then use the handle on the bottom panel to pull the garage door all the way down. Like before, only use the handle to lower the door to avoid injuring your fingers!
But here's something to watch out for. Sometimes the latch gets stuck in the down position on the door arm. To fix this just wiggle the red cord a bit until it flips back in place. When it's stuck in the down position there's no way to get the garage door to reattach to the motor. Usually this isn't a problem but I did run into this issue while shooting this video. And the rest of the process you should already know how to do. Just lift the door until it clicks back into the motor trolley. The garage door locks automatically when using the opener and remote. when you open manually during power outage, does closing manually lock the door?

The door will not lock automatically when you open the garage door manually. But you can keep someone on the outside from opening it by placing something on both sides of the track in a couple of openings. Some garage doors have a locking handle in the middle so when you twist it, metal rods are extended into 2 holes in the track to prevent the door from opening. Also, as long as the garage door arm is connected to the motor in the closed position the door will essentially be locked. But again, if the door is detached from the motor the door will freely open.
