In this video, I'm going to show you the first thing you need to check if your furnace has suddenly stopped working. Most of the time the problem is caused by a burnt out ignitor. And to avoid a large repair bill, I recommend following these steps before calling a repairman.
To start I need access to the inside of the furnace. Typically at the bottom are the gas burners. And the location of the ignitor is in the back in the direct path of one of the burners. This is known as a hot surface ignitor and it's a part that's very easy to replace yourself. I've found that the ignitor is the 99% of the problem whenever my furnace stops working. So let me show you how to check this.
Before proceeding, first shut off the power to the furnace. At this point, find and detach the ignitor's wire connector. Now it's safe to remove the hot surface ignitor. Typically it's held in with a screw but sometimes furnaces might use a retaining clip. Once it's detached, gently lift it out. A used ignitor will have a lot of discoloration on it because it heats up red hot to ignite the gas from the burners. And it's constantly hit with direct flame when the furnace is running. When the ignitor burns out you'll clearly see a break in the filament and more discolorations. Here, my old one looks used but is still good.
New ignitors can easily be found on Amazon and you can usually find a replacement model number on the connector or an attached tag on the wires. But in the middle fo the winter it becomes an emergency, which means you probably can't wait for shipping. So I've learned from past experience to always have a spare ignitor on hand. And I'll list a few ignitors in the description so it's easy for you to find. There's a slim chance you might be able to buy one locally but the one time I tried that, the HVAC company said they only sell ignitors to licensed contractors.
A new hot surface ignitor averages around $35 so it's definitely worth keeping an extra one on hand for your specific furnace. When it's installed, flip the breaker back on and the furnace should run like normal again. And one last thing, never touch the filament on the ignitor with your fingers. The oils on your hand will cause it to overheat and burn out much faster than normal.
