Like most bullies Putin didn't expect his victim to strike back. Equally, like most bullies, Putin is aghast and outraged at receiving some of his own medicine.

Putin didn't expect the Ukrainians to do this "offensive"? In my view, Russians made a clever trap for Ukrainians. Do you believe that Russians having satellites, drones and most importantly a big net of collaborators on the Ukrainian side, didn't realize what was cooking up?
In my view, the current situation in the Kursk's direction is like this

Given the lack of defensive preparation on its western border, it's obvious that Russia never seriously believed that NATO was a threat to the motherland but rather to its imperialist ambitions.

Very good point. You can be sure that there's probably more preparation along the borders with Russia's 'allies' like China and North Korea than Finland. But there's probably not much there either.

Why is anyone surprised? The two partisan raids into Belgorod, Prigozhian‘s (sp) “Justice March“, the ISIS-K attack on Moscow, and the ethnic minority attack in Dagestan showed Russia lacked internal defenses.
And, yes, it‘s an election year in the USA. If Ukraine fails this incursion (which was always possible before the incursion), it makes the current administration look bad for not providing enough weapons to Ukraine. Ukraine‘s boldness looks bad on Trump for not supporting “the underdog“ so he might have to change his position.

Until now Russia has been slowly grinding Ukraine down with larger numbers of "expendable" soldiers. Absent major new weapons from the West, this the status quo unless something was done to unbalance this stalemate. Ukraine took a page from Sun Tzu and struck where the enemy was weak and inattentive and took advantage of Russian incompetence in a dynamically changing battlefield. Ukraine's success depends on using this advantage until it destabilizes Putin's regime.

Not really. Ukraine has inflicted 3x losses at minimum on Russia. Russia's only got 3-4 advantage theoretically (if in total mobilisation/total war mode ...but Russia is not in that mode, neither is Ukraine.
Russia has 500.000 in Ukraine & they've barely been able to advance in only a few places. Ukraine has been inhibited in that even though they have a million under arrms they cannot apply entire force to active front as they have to guard their whole border even in inactive areas & keep RRF Reserves ready to help support the troops on the active Front lest Russia do to them what they just did to Russia.

Worth remembering that there are 3 key strategic targets for Ukraine.
    1) The natural gas pumping station that still supplies natural gas to mainly Hungary and Slovakia. And is one of the last major sources of foreign currency Russia has. Ukraine already controls that.
    2) The Kursk NPP supplies power for about 50% of Russias total iron ore refinement, about 25% of Russias total steel production, and almost 80% of Russias total advanced alloy production. Without it Russias ability to sustain the war effort will suffer a severe almost irreparable blow.
    3) The Kursk-Belgorod railroad supplies between 60% and 80% of the total resources to the Russia frontlines inside Ukraine. Cutting it would mean supplies have to take a 1400km detour putting an enormous strain on the Russian railroad system that is already at the brink of collapse because almost all of it was built during the Cold War and has been poorly maintained ever since due to rampant corruption.

Russia grinded to a halt in oblast, so Ukraine are using their NATO trained and geared reserves. Using their offensive NATO battalions campaign troops on a ehhh Campaign. Also logistics are not the big issue when you control roads in perfect condition. They can speed in supply's to the army core centers in hours, doing 100km/hour. I'm not the most knowledgable, but I wonder about the political angle when it comes to the prisoners of war.
From what I've heard, most the Russian armed forces used so far have been from the poorer and more rural regions, and that the folks that Ukraine has been taking prisoner likely weren't ever meant to see combat; where richer and more urban families' kids in military service might end up.
So they could have a bunch folks in Moscow with some real influence getting on Putin's case to end the war to get their kids back.
Plus the idea that they might (safely) knock out the Nuclear Power Plant and leave a chunk of Russians without power.

None of the talking heads have mentioned Ukraines potential to have a numbers and firepower advantage locally whilst taking territory attacking uncoordinated dribs and drabs arriving from eastern Ukraine. Were the Russians to attempt to form up then they can be targeted by long fires or F16, not to mention the logistics train. Where will that come from for the Russians and how will it be distributed to a fast moving frontline without the use of rail. I can easily see this becoming a piecemeal destruction and surrender of the Russian army.
