I was there in June 2013. Stayed in the only guest house in the village, kastel i think it was called, where they filmed the opening sequence and the barrage sequence. They were just starting to put the water drains in. No running water. The owner of the guesthouse was actually in the movie, when he was aged 4. He can be seen as a young boy pushing the jeep at the end of the movie. I arrived in the bank village, Vizinada in the late afternoon after driving from Salzburg, toured the village, didn't ring the bell, , found the 30cal and BAR locations, "stay there" wall, "pull it" hole in the wall, "that's paint", "so the Germans cant here us", made the spaghetti western walk, shame the bombed out building had been rebuilt. All the blown up stage props were gone, buildings, walls, cornices etc. Then climbed the hill for the tree and the hero scene and even found the bend in the road the tanks come around in the rain. Picked up a big bottle of wine and had a coffee with a local girl. Arrived Kastel to drink the wine. Got talking to the guesthouse owner and at midnight he walked me around the village telling me what he remembered. I was the first visitor he had met who had seen the film, the warriors, i think he called it. Well that was a long time ago now. Still, waited a long time to find it and it is still my favorite day of all time.
Mateusz, great job on the three videos. KH is one of my favorite war movies, and you did a great job showing fans just how much the filming locations in Yugoslavia/Croatia have changed since summer/fall 1969. Thanks for your hard work on all of the videos and still photos.
I spent few years in finding unknown filming locations, analyzing google maps satellite and google street view, although a two of them is still missing(barn and pillbox scene), they were probably taken somewhere in Serbia. Serbia (former Yugoslavia) was also involved in making of movie (Beocin, Vrdnik). It nice to hear from you, such a kind words. Thanks.
@@mateuszciszewski2613 thank you from Pennsylvania USA I also appreciate your hard work. Ive loved this movie for a very long time. Probably my Favorite !
Your looking back with rose colored glasses. The US back then was fragmented as well with anti Vietnam war marches and race relations not the best as well as unions having to always struggle. We made it through that and we'll make it through this. It's what happens in a country that has so much diversity and freedoms in which to voice your differences. Hopefully it will only make us stronger. It is encumbent on each of us to be a decent person though and adhere to higher principles if we want things to be better.
Two villages, kastel and Vizinada and the surrounding area. The depot, convoy and column of Shermans coming over the hill were also filmed near Vizinada. The minefield isn't far either, just over the hill down towards the valley a few kilometers away. They also filmed closer to Belgrade at a different time for the farmhouse scenes at the beginning, the opening sequence in the rain between the village and the farmhouse and the HQ scenes. The railroad crossing is also not near Vizinada, i forget where, but there is a swimming pool there now. The tunnel was fake.
One of my favorite movies since I saw it for the first time over twenty years ago. I spent an hour in Vizinada via Google Streetview and compared it with the movie. They have really destroyed half a dozen historic houses in the center of the village. I guess today this would be unthinkable.
I saw Kelly's Heroes and the Dirty Dozen in a drive thru when I was like 7. It left a profound impact on me at that age and I have loved both of those movies ever since but Kelly's is my favorite of the 2.
I think you may find that they haven't destroyed any buildings. The buildings you think were destroyed were only set props built for the movie. The bank, brown building, extensions to buildings, cornices etc. Anything that was damaged in the movie was fake. They didn't fire real shells. It wasn't a real Tiger. They built fake buildings out of plywood and plasterboard and then made them look like they blew up. Sure there has been some renovations, some modifications, heck they sealed the roads and built some new homes. But what do you expect. People live there. What I liked was the sounds were the same as in the movie. When you are there it sounds just like when Kelly walks ahead of the Sherman to scout a position. You can hear chickens and dogs, and they are still there. Cats too. Its kewl.
The video are great but imo it would have been better side by side. One of my fav WW2 movies and Burning Bridges one of my fav songs. Such a great cast. I still use the "Stop with the negative waves" when someone goes all negative like Captain Oddball Stubbing , LOL
Oddball said many things but never that. Most famously "Why don't you knock it off with those negative waves", but also "oh man, don't hit me with your negative waves so early in the mornings" and "see what sending out those negative waves did ....." and "more negative waves". And Oddball wasn't a Captain, he was a Sergeant, same as Big Joe. The Captain wanted to get that old yacht into the hold of a B17, if you remember. Unless Cpt Oddball Stubbing is an actual Cpt that you know.
If you love the older war movies I have two more good ones for you. 1) 'Shout At The Devil' starring Lee Marvin and Roger Moore. This one is based on a true story from World War I in 1913. 2) 'The Devil's Brigade' starring Cliff Robertson and a multitude of stars. Lots of funny moments in this one. Enjoy!
Why not? Countless foreign co-productions were filmed in the former Yugoslavia. Especially since there were remnants of WW2 equipment (both Russian and American) for war movies.
Money. In fact they filmed many movies there. There was some arrangement with the Yugoslav govt and they couldn't take money earnt there out of the country, so they just kept ploughing it back into new productions. I do know that the production company was Avala Films who were Serbian, Yugoslavian back then. Plus there was a ready supply of WW2 weapons and cheap extras to put in kraut uniforms. They modified 3 old T34s to look like Tigers which went on to be used in other movies, I've seen them over the years, can't remember which movies. I'm 55 years old now.
I served in two wars. Stuff likes this happens...more than you think. It portrays an Americans' innate deep seated attitude toward the insanity of war.
I did, but you don't drive, you walk. Both villages are tiny. Well the parts they used for the movies are. Both villages have expanded now. But they only used 4 narrow lanes from each village, tight shots from various directions, but all right close to each other. If you think about the final battle, if you stand where the BAR was you can see the brown building and bank straight ahead, to the left is where the 30 cal was and the hole in the wall made by one Tiger, to the right is where another tank got hit by paint and to the rear is where the two trucks were and the kraut got his throat slit. Its all within yards. Straight ahead also is the door little Joe went through with fisher to cover the windows. And except for some new paintwork its all pretty much as it was.
Also, The germans walking up behind it are looking right at it as they pass by, Even in the dark with thunder and rain you should be able to tell what it is. 0 points for realism, 10 points for being funny. I thing they did it this way just to be funny, This would never ever work irl.

Great work!! One of the best movies ever. I could watch it 100 times.
I have.
Great job! KH has always been one of my favorites.
Amazing that half a century later, so many of the buildings are recognizable.
Love all your Kelly Heroes movie stuff. It’s one of my favorite movies.

Telly Savalas ... legend
His brother was Mulligan.
vanilla Gorilla yeah who also played Stavros in Kojack 👍
@@vanillagorilla8236 I just realized that while looking at the names of the characters after having seen the movie many times.
Woof woof!
love that opening scene, All the other troops are dummies, Even the one that noticed the jeep, He only noticed it after walking by it a second time.
In my opinion, one of the 10 best movies ever made. "Make a deal! Maybe the guy is a Republican!"
"A deal deal. Maybe the guy is a republican".
Nice!
Crapgame: Try making a DEAL!
Big Joe: What kind of DEAL?
Crapgame: A DEAL, deal!
Well done - That took a lot of effort nice to see the locations
But a commentary would make it more educational.

Wonder how they got permission to film in Yugoslavia?
Why not?

I've been wondering about that for a LONG

Is this Italy!?
No, the bulk of the movie was filmed on the Istrian peninsula in the former Yugoslavia, today's Croatia.
Istria today belongs to Croatia but once it was a part of Italy, I guess 1918-1945.
No
What's the name of the song?

Burning Bridges. Mike Curb Congregation. It was a big hit at the time.

Alright so it's a beautiful day, now let's get down to cases
How are we supposed to see the location when they are on the screen for such a short time?? Rubbish
The film was made on location in Yugoslavia. The town still exists. With some screen grabs and exploring the town it's entirely possible.
