West Brom v Birmingham - Commentary by Hugh Johns
Used to love this fixture, home and away. It was our original East End derby between two clubs formed within 7 years of each other. Special atmosphere back then, and it'd be nice to see Leyton Orient find their place further up the EFL once again. Happy days ⚒
The commentary is sheer poetry compared to today's over-the-top drama. Willie Johnston's V sign to the mocking Birmingham fans is fantastic - such a great player, and a great character.
The debut of an England great. Brian Moore did pick him out, but no one would have imagined Laurie Cunningham would have played such a significant part in English football history at West Brom and then Real Madrid.
God i loved that Tune memories came flooding back there 😢
A bit of research reveals the Texaco Cup ran for 5 seasons and featured teams from England Scotland Northern Ireland and Ireland which hadn't qualified for European competition. It seems incredulous today that teams would play in other competitions. I can remember the Anglo-Scottish cup, the Anglo- Italian cup, the Simod Cup amongst others. I guess back in the day, teams couldn't get enough football. No complaining about fixture congestion for these fellas. 💪
Willie Johnston was mercurial
Laurie was good at Orient and had a verygood game.
Thank you for these great uploads.. brings back great memories ⚒️⚒️⚒️
Ironsss
Laurie Cunningham best 100k anyone spent anywhere !! then to see the maestro Willie Johnston , no one around anywhere like them 2 , great times...
Kenny Burns before Cloughie converting him to top class central defender.
Ok, so West Ham didn’t go on to win this cup, we saved the cup winning for a different one that season. 🤣
Work hard all week, the Sat match place to unwind get rid of all that stress , no politics like take the knee etc., no VAR, ref good or bad created g8 camaraderie after in the pub, all gone now in the name of money., sorry no longer working class game where we could have an outlet after a crap week.
No crowds anymore either, just massive audiences demanding to be entertained ⚒
Laurie Cunningham corner 06:40
Brian Moore was a good commentator, but his lack of knowledge [looking back] was quite shocking..... "Laurie Cunningham, picked up from Arsenal's doorstep" - Moore failed to mention that Laurie WAS with Arsenal, but was released ! When Peter Bennett came on as sub, BM didn't even mention that "Les" was signed FROM the Hammers - and was back at his previous [first] club....... Poor.
