Macedonia didn't even. It was a Kingdom. And the way of ruling makes you separate things? In Athens there was Democracy. In Sparta, Oligarchy. But there were both city-states. There were both Greeks.

Yes it did. Because the city-state was an organization system and not a political one. That means, that each city-state as an organization system, it can separately have different political system than other city-states.
Athens was a city-state that had Democracy as a politcal system (after the reform of Kleisthenes and later Perikles) .
Sparta was also a city-state that had Oligarchy as a political system.
Last but not least, don't forget that Athens passed through all the political systems. Monarchy, Oligarchy, Aristocracy, Tyranny, Democracy. But it was a city-state, in all of them.

Even the modern Greeks up until the late 19th century called themselves Romioi. In other words the Romans and Greeks had become indistinguishable. This was obviously a Latin name. The word Hellene was resurrected later as the newly formed nation attempted to re-establish a connection with the Hellenes of antiquity. That's not to say that this link is artificial. Who better to make this claim than the Modern people who speak a language derived from Koine (Hellenistic Greek).
But the Byzantines were not like the Hellenes. They were a fusion of Greco-Roman culture with a good dose of Judeo-Christian ritualistic traditions. They were part of a Theocratic State. Athenian democracy had been flushed down the toilet. They had forgotten much of the Ancient wisdom of the Hellenes. They no longer traced their spiritual genesis to the fields of Troy but to a Jewish Adam and Eve. Even the great Hellenic centres of learning such as the Academy of Plato were closed by these religious fanatics.

I don't mind if they use the name Macedonia, because it make sense for geographical reasons, but please don't change history. It's unethical. guys get your facts straight... Eastern Roman Empire had nothing to do with Rome and its decedant Western Roman Empire. Eastern Romans were Greek-speaking , orthodox christians whilst the western romans were latin speaking catholics. They even had wars between them - no one was controlled by foreigners , back at the time Roman was a national identity not an ethnicity. So the residents of nowaday Greece are Greek-speaking orthodox and nowaday Italy is Italian-speaking catholics. So Greece is the heir of the Eastern part and Italy the heir of the western part, simple af.

I am a Macedon (real one) from my father's side and my mother's ancestors are from Constantinople and these guys are really trying to "fade" our heritage because they dont have one. like when they say... Although we know that Macedonia conquered Persia we have huge respect for them because they were worthy and respectful opponents. and they do teach us about civilizations and every thing , we must study history for at least 8 years in school. We identify Macedonians as Greek, just because they were different state doesn't mean that they are not Greek. But really this heritage and history stealing is a huge problem for us now, because of this young countries trying to make up some culture and root for themselves.

What a simple, useless video on any country. 1) Ancient Macedonia has nothing do to with the newly formed nation calling itself Macedonia. Ancient Macedonians were of the Doric tribe direct brothers of Spartans and they spoke Greek, part of Greek culture and expanded their land during Phillip 2 and Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great is Macedonian like Pericles was Athenian but all were common ethnicity based on language and culture. Alexander's empire was from his interest in the Iliad to be immortal like his hero Achilles and take revenge on the Persians for their invasion of Greece when they destroyed Athens during the Greco-Persian Wars and Persian influence on Greek city-states. His empire lead to the Hellenistic age which basically is the expansion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean & Middle East. You don't get more Greek than that. Byzantium was also predominately Greek and Greek speaking populations built and named because of ancient Greek city of Byzantium but the Roman Empire moved the power of Rome under Constantine renaming it Constantinople. Was a mixture of Greek & Roman culture heavily influenced by Greek culture. Again, you don't get more Greek than that. Get your facts right. This is taught in universities all over. The nation-state of Rep Macedonia are of Slavic decent closely related to Bulgarians. Only reason they claim the name because of Tito's interest in expanding into the Aegean for sea access and a small portion of their land historically being a part of greater Macedonia during the Roman-Byzantine eras. Simple as that, nothing more. If they were Macedonian descent then why do they not speak Greek? Why do they relate to Slavs? Also, Byzantine Empire under two Greeks created today what is the Slavic language for them and converted them into Christianity. Again, all historical facts.

The video calls FYROM, a country inhabited mostly from Slavs and Albanians, "Macedonia" and that in the ancient times, "Macedonia" ruled Greece. The video indicates also that the Byzantine Empire ruled Greece.

Anatolia was mostly a greek region that even took its name from the greek ανατολή that means "east" where the sun is rising. Until this day it is still a region and not a country. If turkey decide to call all turkey Anatolia then yes their is a problem to that. And don't get me wrong we don't claim the land. Both Macedonia and Byzantine empire ( for the majority of its life span) were Greeks, using the word "ruled Greece" is misleading as these empires represented ancient and medieval Greece.

It was the eastern part of the roman empire which became independent after the split of the roman empire and in which the greek language and culture was prevalent. Even its name was greek. It was named after the ancient greek city state of Byzantium which was founded in the area of the city that is called Instanbul today. It was the political, economical and social evolution of the hellenistic empire of Alexander the great. Hellen means Greek. Its citizens were greeks. It wasn't occupied by roman army.
It was a occupy, by Romans which means Italian, 'Byzantium' name is made-up by historian for separate typical roman empire, there was a lot of nations under the east roman empire and greeks one of that nation, also Arabs, Armenians, others, dynasty of eastern Rome is Italian, they did adopt greek language because they did build their capital inside of the greek cities and people of the Constantinople was greek that's the way they are speaking greek. So Eastern Roman Empire was Greek-speaking orthodox same as the people of nowadays Greece and Western Roman Empire was latin-speaking catholics pretty close to modern Italy.
