Great video. These ideas are great, and are made more likely to be possible when the Federal and State governments are not dictating policy from above. This idea of social entrepreneurship is the engine under which "laboratories of invention" operate. Testing to see if they work is addressed in Jim Manzi's "Uncontrolled". I love this video because it shows the community of American people, through our own efforts, want to wrest the controls from the politicians and statists to try new ideas.
Awesome video. Disappointing to see so many negative comments. I get the skepticism, but let's at least give ideas like this the benefit of the doubt. It's not good to just downplay any possible need for community-oriented business ideas.
At first I was like, "Sounds like BS." Now I'm like, "Sounds like BS, but at least they're on the right track." I like market driven people. They seem to think a lot more clearly.
These are really excellent entrepreneurs! Although I lean slightly left-libertarian(VERY slightly) the underlying principles of both movements are the same. Big Business and Big Government have failed their moral obligations and it's time for individual citizens to spark change!
FINALLY some really cool, exciting shit getting covered by Reason. I'm so sick of political squabbling among fucking greybeards. Time to just sidestep them and make our own future. Fixing government on the State and Federal level is a lost cause. But trying new things on the neighborhood and city levels is totally viable and actually lays the groundwork for a more sane society down the road.
it always pisses me off when people talk about profit, and non-profits, because the only difference is that in non-profits can't distribute their profits to share holders, where as for profits can. profit means total cost is lower than total revenue, and what non-profits do with their profits is raise costs with bonuses ect.
social enterprise is actually sounding a lot like socialism to me for some reason, it might be the share and share alike tool shed idea that they funded.. I need to read something about these guys. Reason, you got anything for me?
I don't know whether to think that this is wonderful because creative people are solving the problems of others quickly and making a profit doing it, or whether to be sad because they will be paying taxes that perpetuate our dysfunctional and evil governments. Should I feel like John Galt, that the best these entrepreneurs should be doing is shrugging? I'm just not sure.
"How big a house does one man need?" As big as he wants it to be! ;)

Wouldn't be hilarious is DC became the center of entrepreneurship?
