Yes, the trigger from Obsidian Battle-Axe doesn't target, so it can be attached to creatures with shroud this way.
Awesome! Thank you for confirming. I was very concerned that I'd made a misplay there.
playing hapatra with atraxa on the battlefield. What a madlad.
Me as hapatra in my playgroup, there are 3 other atraxa players, unfortunately (or fortunately however you want to see it) I manage to get into regular games of 3 atraxa and 1 hapatra! Either I go off with snakes wile the atraxa are proliferating each other’s -1/-1 counters or they all go for me first. Guess which one is more common.
Always a pleasure to see Mistform Ultimus on the spotlight.
I find it amusing that Atraxa almost killed everyone through poison because SOMEONE ELSE gave every player a poison counter... :P
Kevin......
I see the rats come out, and wonder "Why would you do that with an Atraxa in the game!" XD
DarkEinherjar I face palmed pretty hard at that lol
Well people didn't exactly make a point of ganging up against the Atraxa player either, they basically just wiped the board to slow him down but that stopped them from actually hitting his life total at the same time so he just rebuilt before anyone could attack.
Yeah... this is usually when politics kick in and people make agreements to take down the most dangerous player, even if it's just to leave each other alone for a while, as long as they don't go out of control as well.
As a Hapatra player myself, there were a couple of misplays that would help Kevin going forward. At 7:17 he should have saved his Beast from Within so that the Hydra would most likely swing at Elspeth and not his face. 14:04 Hapatra IS the deck, If you cast Black Sun or any type of mass neg counters you want her on the field when you do. That play would have wiped the board and given him 12(?) snakes! Hope this helps moving forward, I was hard rooting for Kevin this game!
That black sun zenith play was horrid.
15:00 The axe will equip as it does not target. Its the same as Bruna, light of alabaster
He would not be able to activate it's equip ability for your commander as equipping it DOES target. But it's attach trigger does not target, it just happens.
@@knytetech7732 Well that was what i meant, but yeah could have explained better :D
Chump block with Deepglow Stake what?
Exactly ! Missblock
Exactly the same reaction
Yeah, baffling. "I've got this card that can easily win the game later on... better throw it in the trash."
I predicted that Hapatra would die to her own counter as part of a misplay right away when I saw the thumbnail.. Giving her the first counter is a risky move anyway, but against an atraxa deck? Really?
Dude, your Mistorm Ultimus deck is silly. I love it.
It was a pretty close game, if Sam would have drawn a sacrefice outlet he would have won the game because of a infinite combo
I wonder who made that amazing intro? 😜 I love seeing your Mistform deck, it looks so fun! 😁
That big booming British voice is unmistakable!
I'm told two very handsome fellows were paid large sums of money to make the intro.
You are too kind good sir! 😍
Affinity love your content I love you guys collaborated on this can we get a live game with you all please
Thanks Matt! We appreciate your kind words! 😁
Just found you while looking for cards for gonti and watched your all black commander deck episode. I dig what you're doing, keep it up!
Drops a deep glow scate as a blocker...WHAT?!
Atraxa building around creature synergy is pretty cool, IMO. I have one, and it's really awesome.
Kevin made a huge mistake with that black sun. He let hapatra die for no reason in combat when he could have gotten a bunch of snake tokens
As much as I love Hapatra, she performs wildly differently depending on how the first 3-4 turns play out. If you can drop her on turn 2 (and didn't go last), get a snake on turn 3 (and not have to put a counter on Hapatra), and then get a second one on turn 4, you're in good shape. But if something like what happened in this game takes place, you're usually stuck playing from behind the entire game. It stinks that the gameplan is so fragile, because when it works it's incredibly fun.
I really don't like how the deck simply doesn't work without her... I usually avoid decks that rely too heavily on having the commander on the board all the time. :/
@@DarkEinherjar hapatra is an exception where she costs 2 so the tax really doesn't hurt much until you're casting her for the 4th or 5th time.
I've found once you get going you don't need her anymore. You have Nest of Scarabs and/or Flourishing Defenses as backup versions of the effect, which I usually tutor for at the soonest opportunity. The problem is the early game. Losing Hapatra early on is a huge tempo loss and unless you draw into something insane like Generous Patron + Soul Snuffers you're probably gonna fall behind.
I don't trust my luck... sometimes I can end up in a game like this, where someone board wipes every five minutes, so she'll never stick on the board.
This is why I go for resilient commanders, who can protect themselves in some way, or try to make sure the deck can still work without the commander.
He did mess up by putting the counter on Hapatra herself. He cast Scooze after combat. He shoulda cast it first and put the counter on it as it can shrug them off by eating a creature from a yard. What I woulda done anyway.
My manz said “with great shame, I pass my turn.” I felt that
That Griffin Canyon came out of nowhere! Always fun to see all the mixed tribal mechanics just to see Ultimus become OP! Haha great game
I like this video in particular and find myself coming back to it every now and then. I blame Hapatra and Mistform.
Also wow, the nostalgia at seeing the old video overlay!
EDIT: Watching this makes me miss in person games so much more. Hopefully things will improve soon.
Muddstah upload and my lady Hapatra in it = immediate click! Nice game! The more I watch your Mistform Ultimus deck, the more I'm tempted to build one myself!
Regarding Hapatra and referring to some other posts: I have a deck myself and love piloting her, but yeah... there is seldom a middle ground: either it performs outrageously good and resilient, or you cannot capitalize from her ability and then it's just a mediocre Golgari deck... But I think it's the same with almost every deck that follows a rather linear strategy due to their commander - it's a "hit or miss" type of game :-/
So, Kevin: consider rebuilding and trying her! She'll be rewarding your endeavour ;-)
Keep it up!
I think Meren still makes the most resilient Golgari decks because of the value she generates.
@@DarkEinherjar sure thing! But Meren simply performs in an entirely different league than other Golgari legends...Hapatra is less obnoxious, although she's able to do mean stuff
when i was really young I had a friend also named Antoine who played Magic. I didn't at that time, and he moved away in 5th grade. : ( haven't seen or spoken to him since
I really enjoyed this video! One of the best games on your channel, keep up the good work!
Equipping equipment normally will Target so it would not but the effect from obsidian battle axe does not target so it works
5:50 the +1 counters already being on a creature cancel out -1 counters being placed on it, the +1's should still be removed, hapatra shouldn't trigger however.
Edited to comment on how the third time hapatra got cast only 1 time commander tax was paid
Rule 121.3 says that if both exist on a card, they are removed as a state based action. The -1/-1 counters are still placed and Hapatra still triggers
This game is the epitome of a great edh game
Sees video time -> Sees that Atraxa player has kept Ugin -> Assumes super friends -> proceeds to have diarrhea from the very thought of going through a durdle game with a super friends deck
Make sure to stay hydrated.
17:44
Edgeform Ultimus
you were right with the battle axe trigger, you can equip it cause it´s a trigger without a target
Do you have a Coat of Arms in your deck there Muddstah because that could potentially help you win faster? Which is why I will soon be making a Karona the False God commander deck around changeling tribal.
Some of the most interesting games start with bad opening hands. This was a good one!
You used less competitive decks, but it was refreshing to see this duel, I really like it.
Duneblast as part of resolution of the spell you choose the creature to live then destroy the others. You have to beast within before the choice is made.
13:58 kevin taps a land, and then moves to combat, making his mana go away right?
Yes that is right but he was only tapping it because he was able to untap two lands. The mana still empties from the pool when he goes to combat.
What did you tutor for with long term plans?? I just can't help but think that was turning point for you🤔
Galecaster
Parabéns pelo vídeo! Hoje e sempre
Ok, so i'm 2 years late, but you are awesome just for playing danse macabre
Did you edit out the Unesh trigger at 7:45, or just forget to resolve it?
That would have been me missing the trigger =( It was my first time playing with him in the deck. Good catch!
Nice game, but nobody noticed that kevin cheated on the commander tax at 7:32 ? He played her for the 3th time by then. At 4:34 he also payed 4mana for Hapatra
Just came to check comments, thought no one else saw it
Probably not cheating though, it's pretty common to missplace the tax dice
That’s why most people use a dice to take track of the tax. But I did the same, since most people only noticed the forgotten unesh trigger that happened right after.
3th. 3TH!?
3th
Turn 10 Kevin casts his commander for 4 when it should have been 6
Then wrong again Turn 13 paying 6 when it should have been 8
6:46 how did you lose 16 life?
He lost 16 from the attack that was gonna happen on the next turn. He just did the edit on his life early.
wow where do i join the club for Kevin’s with hapatra decks
Hey Muddstah, have you ever considered running Seraph Sanctuary? It seems like your deck doesn't have any way to bounce back from a low life total.
Could be interesting! Mono colored decks allow for more utility lands, so I'll see about adding it.
That life gain is too slow, even in duels, and he doesn't have enough angels he can create (even counting all the shapeshifters) to make good use of it.
The only way I can see the deck gaining enough life to make a difference is by sticking Loxodon Warhammer on an unblockable creature. Or at least Pristine Talisman to tap for mana and gain life.
I've been meaning to ask, how do games work? I like how it's condensed, but what does the introduction mean by "keeping"certain cards. I've seen a few of these videos in the past and never understood that. Love the content, especially when condensed like this. Hopefully Hapatra can get more runs in the future. She's a really fun commander
So keeping is just my referring to what cards they have in their opening hands.
@@MTGMuddstah Oh, thank you! That makes much more sense now, lol.
You should put Elephant Graveyard into the Mistform deck, would be really cool
It's not cheap =(
Adid i miss something. Shouldnt kevin have a 2nd snack due to the -1-1 being proliferated?
It's only when Kevin puts the counters on, sadly.
@@MTGMuddstah I wasnt paying full attention i thought hed placed counter on himself but he wasnt the controller of the Profilerate trigger so he doesn't place the counter on Hapatra, so she doesnt trigger.
That's exactly it! Well put.
I love the mistform ultimus deck ^^
I wouldve exiled that karmic asap with the scooze.
I love hapatra...she can get really nasty if you get a headstart. The only time i ever really run into issues is when i am against low creature decks and when I get land starved at the start like I saw in this game.
Great game though!!
Monday's and Thursdays are best days
Fuck yeah man longer than just 11 minutes.
Love face to face, I order most of my singles from them
They were my go to store for big cards while living in Montreal. It was cool to be allowed to film there. Big thanks to the Store Manager Chris for giving me the go ahead!
MTG Muddstah yeah very cool of them!
Edit: I forgot it’s toughness not power. All nonsense on my end.
I don’t think Sam knows how Bolster works. You can only choose if there’s a tie for the lowest. On turn 14 he put a counter on Alesha when Solemn and Karmic Guide were weaker so she was an illegal target.
Hey! This is Sam :)
Alesha came in as a 3/2 (the red die was just to say she'd been cast once from the command zone that game), and Solemn Simulacrum was a 2/2 at the time, so their toughness was tied. She got the counter on the first Anafenza trigger, and the sad robot got one the second time around.
I probably made a lot of bad choices, but hopefully no rule breaks!
Samson *facepalms* Disregard. I thought it was power not toughness. I’m an idiot.
@@ms.sysbit5511 No worries! Keeping me on my toes :D
Great decks!
You forgot Unesh’s ETB.
like the budget/lower-tier, at least once in a while.
This might be a stupid question but.................. Wasn't there a new rule out where your commander can no longer go into the library? Or was I being BS'd by my playgroup?
If a commander goes anywhere, then you can put it into the command zone.
That's not what I meant. IF the commander goes into the library is it allowed to go into the library or does it HAVE TO go into the commander zone?
You get to choose if it does or not. If your Commander leaves the field (dies, bounced, shuffled, etc) you may have it go to the Command Zone instead
Tuck Rule makes it so if a commander would be shuffled it must go to the Command Zone
@@kylerames126 Not "must." It CAN be put in the command zone as a replacement, but it isn't mandatory. Check the comprehensive rules 903.9
: )
"Budget"
"Ugin"
Well, if it's the ONLY PW in the deck, that can be considered "budget" for Atraxa standards... :P
Well, my second ever fate retorted pack I pulled ugin so...
@@giraffetownfan8810 I didn't pull anything in a full booster box of FR
@@PlutoDarknight dam that sucks man I popped off so hard and you should be able to pop off twice as hard
Budget is always a weird concept to me. I paid way more for my Scalding Tarns 2 years ago than I did for my Tundras 20 years ago.
My atraxa tries to get the biomancer and/or bloodspore thrinax with a good amount of counters on them out with my conjurer’s closet. Then cast Sage of hours.
crazy to think that this commander game took this long. shame the format has gotten way faster.
Why would Kevin attack with hapatra *before* zenithing. Zenithing instead of attacking would have had hapatra see those counters, giving him a snake for every creature on the board, leaving everyone else clear and his board still full.
I wish my Eugene could survive that long
Karmic guide doesn't die yet cause he didn't have it during his beforehand upkeep... :) just here for the Alesha deck xD
The point on the Atraxa is interesting. The people in my lgs are all playing her with mostly creatures instead of superfriends.
atraxa is a real bomb. and best intro ever xD
have you considered replacing the goblin's head animation with a still image of the logo while introducing yourself? You won't feel the need to justify or explain the animation that way, and you won't need to actively make it less cringey.
I really enjoy your content and I think you've got a friendly vibe to your games that other channels struggle to replicate. I'd love to see some experimental commander-hybrid formats like an arch-enemy format or a 3v3, though I can understand why combos may make these formats difficult to properly implement.
But I like the animation =(
is antoine new?
He and Sam have recently transitioned over from Standard to EDH. I say recently, as in like a few months.
When kevin plays Black Sun, he should have done that with Hapatra in play. He would have gotten a 1/1 snake for each creature on the field.
lately ur havign so much fun with mistform huh 😁
Thrid, I predict Mistform dominates. ;)
Man that was a grinder.
Great game
Antoine should have chosen Dragons instead of Khans off his Citadel Siege. With Hapatra, Mistform and Alesha all wanting to swing, being able to tap down a creature on each opponent's combat step seems extremely strong.
Antonia would have had elite scale guard to help tap down the defending player's creatures , dus removing a blocker with every creature that has a +1/+1 counter on it
Wouldn't Kevin have gotten snake tokens from the Black Sun's Zenith, he put -1/-1 counters on creatures and Hapatra would have been triggered before she died to state-based effects.
Hapatra died in combat before BSZ in the second main phase.
BOW before the god of all creature typeS
That's a lot of damage meme... BUT that's a lot of WRATHS instead!
nice game
It kind of seems that you tried to give everyone a playmat with a commander on it that was almost opposite their color identity hahaha
I actually let people pick. They just so happened to work out like that lol.
Fourth, I predict Alesha wins...
Bigger Dice.!
First, i predict atraxa win
Sliver Hive is too high IQ for me
Oo I hope I win
Deepglow Skate on an empty board...
Yeah, I cringed on that play.
Antoine has a real forte for making questionable plays and winning anyway. (This is Sam)
Wow an atraxa deck won. Huh
Face to face is an unfortunate name of a shop these days....
"Ramunac" My guy, read!
I know this is completely unrelated, but R.I.P Stan Lee.
I literally got informed of his passing in the middle of this video and now I'm too sad to comment anything else.
Misplay on the Commit play on turn 14. The tuck rule isn't valid anymore, you cannot have commanders go into the library. Probably would've slowed down Antoine quite a bit. Not that it mattered a whole lot, though.
I thought you can have a commander go to the library if you so chose.
Actually, you CAN have your commander go to the library if you want to do so; you just don't HAVE to.
The tuck rule, as you recall, was that in the past, if your commander was shuffled into the library, you were forced to put it there. With the rules change, you are allowed to choose whether your commander gets placed into the library or goes back into the command zone. There was no misplay here.
Ooof, yeah I guess I was wrong on the tuck rule. My bad, carry on.
Basically as it stands now, if your commander would changes zones to anywhere except the battlefield (so hand, library, graveyard, or exile), you *MAY* choose to replace that effect by putting it in the command zone instead.
