Hey Guys, another great vlog. Noticed your water tank is different to ours as yours has immersion heater, we fitted one on ours to give us that option. Also great graphics.
Thank you! I'm not sure we'll get much opportunity to use the immersion as I don't imagine we'll visit many moorings with electric hook-ups. Have you found many? xx
To be honest we haven’t used ours much either except when we have shore power when we have booked the boat into a marina when we have needed to go to Kent. We have also used during the summer when we had loads of solar which was the original reason we fitted it. We haven come across any mooring s with electric yet. Xx

I do love the drawings they were fantastic, I am not sure what you used but it is pretty cool. I am not sure if I could get use to the amount of water you are carrying. That would be quite change to get use to. I suppose you need to stop to top off fairly often. But then you do need to stop often to change out the toilet cassettes so it would all work out in the end. Great explanations. Thanks for sharing...Vic
Thanks Vic. We can usually make a tank last a week, so it's not too much inconvenience.
Are you going to lag the pipes? Where the hot pipes run next to the cold pipes the heat will transfer to the cold pipe making the cold water warm. You’ll also loose heat from the heating pipes which is not very economical as you want the max heat running through the rads. Looking good though boys!!

Thats great, really good to see simplified. So I guess I do not need to use copper pipe at all? My one misgiving about plastic pipe is that a leak may develop, less likely on copper with olives I guess

So much easier these days running plastics pipe and fittings. Also easier to repair or add to the system should you need to. Can you isolate the heated water to the radiators so that in the summer when you don’t need radiator heat you can run the boiler just for hot water?
Hi Colin, Yeah, the water that heats the radiators is a separate system from the domestic hot water, so we can just have hot domestic water and not heat the heating system water.

The water from the shower and sink goes into the canal - we’ll use environmentally friendly detergents. Toilet waste is held in a tank and emptied at ‘Elsan’ points along the canal :)
@@FoxesAfloat : Hi it's me again. Where did you drill a hole through the boat's wall? The waterlevel of the canal is surely much higher than the showeroutlet. Do you use another waterpump? And where and how did you instal the poo-tank? What diameter do the tubes have?
The shower waste is pumped out and the toilet tank is under the toilet. If you Google Cassette Toilet, you’ll see what I mean :)

OMG whenever anyone gets technical my brain sparks out! I know you didn’t mention it but I get confused about the hot and cold when it comes to the antifreeze. If the heating and hot water both run from the calorifier, am I showering in water containing antifreeze. I wouldn’t think so but I’m not sure how the two systems run separately with only one calorifier. I bet I’m missing something really simple and sound stupid ☹️. Anyway it was another great video. I loved the diagrams. Were they your drawings and instructions or was it generated by computer, then you added you hand above. It was so neat. If you did do it yourself it was amazing. After watching this video maybe when your boat is finished you should do a visual manual for boat owners, plumbing, electrics, engine maintenance, greasing the stern gland 😳 etc. Thanks as always.

Okay... Imagine the hot water tank (Like an immersion heater). It fills up with water from the main cold storage tank (at the front) and it gets heated by either an electric element (like an immersion heater), but we only use that when we have shore power. The engine heated water runs through the calorifier in a coil, so it stays separate but passes through. It's the same for the Eberspacher which heats the radiators. The hot water runs through the calorifier in a coil. So it's three different systems. Engine, Radiators and domestic water (clean).

Colin, I've heard you call the bed sizes on boats as both full-size and king-size, and I keep thinking there's no way a king-size bed would fit in a narrowboat.
So I looked them up, and here are the dimensions of various mattresses, in cm.:
Full: 134.5 x 190.5
Queen: 152.5 x 203.5
King: 193 x 203.5
Cal. King: 183x 213.5
Yeah, we ended up with a king size.

Hi Colin and Shaun. I've only found your blog after reading Part 1 in WW mag (now subscribing) and have now watched all your Foxes Afloat vlogs to date. We are seriously considering a narrowboat investment too, not as a liveaboard but extended periods of cruising at least and have hired a couple of times. Our research to date has been through the various mags and publications so finding your extremely well made and detailed vlog with your experiences, decisions and build processes is gold-dust! Narrowboat Silver Fox is looking GOOD!
We have so many small questions of detail and layout but your personal choices are close to our own in many ways so following your journey is so informative, along with your professional delivery.
Could I ask 3 questions here please.... ?
1.Did you consider hybrid engine power? Its something that we'd seriously consider unless you have found a major issue?
2.Your backwards facing bed I totally get and had also considered the pitch of the boat for this, but is it possible to build a bed base that slopes in counter to the boat pitch so it's higher above the floor at the head end than at the foot end? Had you thought of that or does it pose other issues? (We'd like to have the view through the forward doors while in bed - as well as the tv!)
3. Both doors and side hatches appear to be steel faced (I guess the insides will have a wooden finish). On the hire boats we've had so far the doors/side hatches have been fully wooden. What are the pros and cons here, please?

Thanks for the message (and for subscribing). Okay, your questions...
1. We didn't consider a hybrid engine. A few people asked us why and the honest answer is that we don't know enough about them. Our decision to go with diesel isn't based on anything more than it's what we know, and we know how to maintain it well. We got a bit of criticism for that from hybrid fans, but at the end of the day it's our decision :)
2. I suppose it would be possible to build a bed base that slopes in counter to the pitch, but it raises a couple of issues. Firstly, the pitch changes depending on the levels of water and fuel in the tanks. Second, the engineering needed to create a slope would be more costly than just turning the bed around. We don't have windows at the bow, and the TV will be on the back of the shower wall, hence it's the easiest option for us.
3. Our side hatch doors are steel with wood panels inside. The steel provides us with the external security and weatherproofing, and the internal wood matches the finish inside the boat. You definitely want steel on the outside!
These are just my opinions, and other boaters may disagree. What I would say is that opinions aren't always right, whoever you listen to. We've learned that. Go and see stuff for yourselves. We did, and it was the best thing we could have done.

Are the heater lines kept separate from the cold water lines? If not, you'll never get cool water (from the cold tap) while the heater is on....

Love the sparkly shower! Colin you love a good bath - why did you guys decide not to put a little boat bath in with a shower overhead? Seen a few boats with this in (think also in one of your earlier vlogs when you were boat shopping). Are they just too small to enjoy, or do they use too much water etc?
That's exactly right, Charles. They use far too much water.
Do I understand it correctly that all your drain water (minus toilet) goes directly into the canals? Soap, plate scrapings, toothpaste, et al. I'm not familiar with the canals there but I find that surprising.
It does. There’s no other way to do it as there’s no room for storage tanks. Everything we use is environmentally friendly to the wildlife. Water is constantly replenished to the canals from rivers and reservoirs, so there’s no build up.

Hi Guys, very well done video...... I have had this question for a while and never had an appropriate place to ask, this seems like its as good as it gets, one would expect it to last a lifetime however stuff happens is there a way to get the water tank out to replace it without tearing most of the front of the boat out or is it just as it is in a canal boat (same would apply to the fuel tank) ? Also does the colorifier have electric heating elements in it to heat the water for heat & hot water when your plugged into mains?

I’m not sure if there’s an easier way of replacing the main tank out without cutting out the front bulkhead.
Yeah, our calorifier heats via the engine, the Eberspacher, and also has an electric immersion heater for when we have shore power.
I wonder if you kept one size of a pluming pipes or various sizes? Hows pressure work on the pipes? Is the woter enought presurizes?
We have a water pump to keep up the pressure which works perfectly x

I'm curious, do you have to have the central heating running if you want hot water - or can hot water and central heating be operated independently?
The radiators can be isolated so it just heats the water 👍🏻
So does the engine have to be running all of the time do your hot water tank maintains hot water for washing and is that the same for the radiator heating for the boat as well? Do you have another means or a back up system?
The calorifier can give us domestic hot water either by running the engine, using the Eberspacher or the immersion heater element. So we have three ways :)

Did you decide on these systems yourself or did you use a specialist company?
We took advice from a lot of boaters and builders and used a combination of the best options.

Starting my second session of binching your vlogs with this episode (came up to vlog 34 in the first session and still not tired of you two, so thats good ;) )
Seeing the plumbing in progress in this video, i do however have a question about that plumbing . You have cold and warm water pipes running next to each other and mostly flowing in opposite directions. Without heat insulation you would basicaly have a heat exchanger along almost the entire length of the boat... How well insulated are those pipes to avoid unwanted heat transfer?

Does the hot water from your eberspacher pass through your radiators before reaching your calorifier? Do you find that it takes a long time for the water to heat up? or did i mis-understand the drawing? :)

It's a circuit from the tank to the radiators that continually circulates. It usually heats the full tank in about 40 minutes and the radiators are hot within 10 minutes unless we have them switched off to just heat the water in the tank.
Hi, I have a question. Have you ever considered Infrared Heating Panels for your boat? Is the main reason people do not have them because of the draw they have on the battery bank?

@@FoxesAfloat Ok awesome, I referred back to your electric video you did to see how much power they would potentially draw too, for one panel that I was looking at of 350w, running from the inverter at say 240v, on for 18 hours i think was around 26ah a day. Is that calculation correct? and Is that quite a lot?

Not at all. The shell is insulated and the heat inside the boat keeps them well above freezing 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat Excellent! I've heard about people leaving the taps on and such to make sure the pipes don't burst in the cold. That could use up your water supply rather quickly. Of course - I am from Flori-duh!

Are you going to insulate the hot water pipes?... Or will you have a way to recirculate the hot water in the pipes?... I just would think you would need to let a lot of water run before it gets warm enough for a morning shower?...
Hi Kevin. The plan would normally be to shower during the day, ideally while the engine is running so that there is plenty of piping hot water for us both, and then the tank can warm up again to give us a tank full for the evening and next morning.
Is the shower drain facing the bow or stern, bearing in mind the boat will be stern lower than the bow, looks like it is bow facing. Forget this if i am wrong.
Hi Mike. The water falls into the plug and is pumped out of the side. There isn't any drain towards the bow or stern.
@@FoxesAfloat What i meant was is the drain at the lowest point, unless i am seeing it wrong it looks like the drain is on the high point of the tray as the boat will be tilting towards the stern, so you may end up with a puddle in the tray below the drain height.

If all your radiators are all on one side of the boat, don't you risk the metal on one side expanding much more than on the opposite side, doing damage to the hull in the long run? Just wond'ring.
