  • Erin and I decided to drive to Elyria to ride a rail trail we had never been on before - The North Coast Inland Trail. We stopped in Kipton, Oberlin, and had lunch in Wakeman before turning around and riding back. We did 40 miles on our bicycles and were pleasantly surprised with the scenery on this mostly shaded bike path.

    I love how it's a foregone conclusion that when you have a free day that a bike ride will be involved.

    Tim, so glad you got a chance to ride N.C.I.T.,! And liked it! It is where I and my friends ride most often.. You definitely need to check out the rest of it.. Going north to the lake is awesome, then ride into downtown Lorain, ride south on Broadway to about 13th or 14th street to Broadway Mary's. for lunch and coffee---you will love the vibe there! Going west beyond Wakeman is very cool 😎 too. There is camping in Collins at Camp Conley and in Lindsay at Wooded Acres- $5.00 for bikes. Indeed a great trail!

      I'm definitely thinking of integrating the whole thing into a longer trip. I want to see the north for sure.
      A few people mentioned Camp Conley.
      Thanks!

      Awesome!
      I just rode more of it on Thursday last week beyond where we stopped. It becomes very rustic and rural before becoming paved again.

    I have riden this trail from Maumee, Ohio to Bellevue ( I picked up the trail at its western terminus) There are some road sections through Fremont. There is a wonderful Tudor Inn in Bellevue that is very friendly to bicycle touring folk. It is also literally on the trail. It is a wonderful trip for me as this was my "first overnighter". West of Bellevue it is mostly farmland and some green tunnel. However I love WIDE open spaces more than the Cuyahoga valley! 😂 (I love both actually). Riding through Toledo is tough as it is so industrial. Swing south and pick up the Wabash Cannonball trail to go west. Wish I could PM you as I ride daily in the Toledo/Maumee area. Enjoy your trip to Ann Arbor.

    Can confirm my wife and I experiencing the exact same confusion point at those bridges recently! heh. Totally agree with the commenter about the north part be very unique and interesting. Plus - it has some climbing for Tim. Yay! Minor tip - the north trail doesn't end east of town at Colorado Ave like Google Maps suggests. There is a newish section, goes another 2 miles west, right into Lorain. Maybe Strava shows it, though.

    You've only scratched the surface! So much good riding out there. One of my favorite rides is Elyria to Lindsey and then take the farm roads up to Catawba. Almost 100mi exactly. Happy to share the route if interested.

    The North Coast Inland Trail is also part of the Adventure Cycling Northern Tier Route from Fremont to Clyde in map section 9, or at least it was when I rode across the country back in 2011. The ACA route uses the trail for only around 9 miles, but it was a pleasant surprise for me when I encountered it when following the ACA map. The section on the ACA route was all on a paved bike path, well shaded, and out of the wind.

    • @JohnRglmtz
      @JohnRglmtz 3 місяці тому +1

      @@TimFitzwater US Bike routes didn't exist when I rode across the country 13 years ago. ACA maps were the only way to go back then. If not then DIY routes were the next best choice. It was just only 3 years ago that the Ohio portion was added to US bike route 30 according to Wikipedia. Whatever, as the US bike route experts made a good choice including this bike path in their system.

      Awesome. My Dad is from Berea. Such a cool little town. We are out that way for Christmas every year but decided to go out there late last winter and just walk around and get drinks and dinner. I've ridden the Trail there and stopped at the brewery - actually was the day Gov. Dewine shut the state down for Covid - so my last meal out for a while!

      It is funny because I am fairly well spoken but I am a reader. So a lot of times I simply haven't heard things pronounced out loud. Plus there are a lot of localisms - most the cities and towns in Ohio definitely don't sound the way the European cities they are named after do.
      I also just mess up trying to do a voice-over for 10 minutes - its not like I'm a news caster....🤠

    The section north of Elyria isn’t particularly long but is particularly spectacular. Crosses the black river 5 (!!) times as I remember and has a unique L shaped bridge that zig zags across river and then back again. Highly recommend. I ride from Huntington Reservation in Bay Village along lake to the trail to Oberlin and back for a metric century.

    Tim - Webb Ball’s shop was downtown Cleveland. That’s where he got involved with railroads. When shop closed the street clock went into disrepair and the city of CLE let it go. Ball’s original street clock is in Fredericktown. Intersection of Sandusky and Main. Check it out if in the area.
