    Great job. I got lucky. After thoroughly cleaning the axle area around both rear wheels, I heavily sprayed WD40 Penetrant into the areas where the shaft and the trans meet, and where the shaft meets the bushings. Moved the wheels by hand - difficult at first - and let it sit all night. Repated the process the next day, and haven't had a problem with it since. Hope someone gets lucky with this process also.

      @Boogie Man I used a leaf blower and a wire brush. No removal of anything. One clean I sprayed the entire drive axle and got into the trans box. The key is letting it sit overnight, then manually move the wheels. At least that's what worked for me. Good luck.

    Great tip! On older Honda SP models the axle sleeve inside the adjuster bracket will corrode and so it's good to shoot some aerosol white lith into the crease to keep rolling free.

    Thank you for this. I had a rear wheel that wouldn't turn so I bought a new wheel and replaced the pinion gear assembly and it still didn't turn. I watched your video about the pinion gear having to face the right direction and that fixed it for me.

    (I’m on my 2nd HRX217HXA and do all my own maintenance.)
    Another related issue is that the two nylon bushings that live inside each height adjuster can get dried out and need to be greased. I did an overhaul on my drive system last year, replacing every component on the rear axle except the transmission itself, including all four of those bushings. Less than a year later the mower became VERY difficult to pull backward. I disassembled it to the point where I could move the transmission side to side so that I could work some grease into those bushings, and now it’s smooth again.
    IMO, the major shortcoming of this mower is the lack of external grease points and it’s dependence on bushings where bearings should have been used. In some areas (I’m in KC), there is no choice during spring and fall but to blast everything out with a water hose. This drive design doesn’t like to get wet.
    If you own one of these mowers, you should consider a good pair of snap ring pliers a required accessory. Preferably a pair with both straight bits and 90 degree bits (Channellock 927 is one good choice).

      @@KSMike1 I use them on .88 acres, once a week. March thru October. Every model has had locked wheels within months. I still use them because they start so easily and use virtually no gasoline for the work load. There's nothing I do destructive, and mowers are kept inside. The first model HRR2169vka rolled best the longest. The newest one, HRR216K10VYAA has only been used this season. I bought it on closeout last fall. Today, it locked up almost completely.

    Great info. I just put a "new " transmission in one of my 217s. Everything is together correctly. I can change these in my sleep. Problem is it will lock backing up intermittently after the oil warms up. Even with cable unhooked it has more resistance than normal to pull backwards. Appears to be too tight from the factory. Set it aside and installed a used one. So its faulty. Problem is I bought it on online from USA to Canada. Shipping not practical to return it. Eventually I will put it in a mower for my own yard. It may loosen up with use. Not going to happen for commercial mowing. Keep in mind that even a new tranny can be faulty.

    @allrock1238 4 роки тому +10

    The core of the issue is the bushings on each side of drive shaft with the gears,, the shaft bearing surface itself needs to be cleaned of any corrosion with emery cloth and lightly greased this shaft needs to spin freely in each bushing otherwise it binds up the wheels when drive is released and the mower is pulled backwards..also make sure the drive cable is not adjusted to tight the drive needs to fully release when you release the handle , the wheels should not creep forward when slightly lifted off the ground with the drive handle released. follow the drive cable adjustment procedure in the manual..

      I was about to mention this, about the bushing bores and axle shaft rust build up. Just here checking to see if the HRX217 has the same drive parts as the HRT216. 9 times out of 10 it those bushings when it won’t roll backwards, but this video would help if somebody had previously put the drive spurs on upside down. Or if it won’t go forward because the woodruffs are stuck in the down position in the spurs due to crud buildup, but if it’s to that point the bushings probably need their bores ran through with the 12GA barrel brush and the axle OD’s dressed anyways.

    I just finished repairing the loss of the wheel drive function on my Honda HRT2162TDA. I thought it was the transmission that had broken ($197.00 for a new tranny), but it turned out tightening the spring that fastens to the hand clutch solved the problem. By shortening the hook on the spring about 1/2 inch, the transmission was again able to engage the rear-drive axle. Since I bought the mower in 1992, I figured that was a small repair for a mower that old.

      Build Motion -- Absolutely a terrible design, that allows -Everything- to get in between the bushing and the axle, that includes moisture, so there will be some rusting going on and all the dirt, grass, etc., that gets in there and also makes it harder to move this machine backwards... If it was not a rear wheel forward drive, we would also notice how hard it is to move it forward, but the engine, belt, etc., takes that load for that...

    fine going forward, but when pulling the mower backwards the rear

      Try adjusting the cable first. If you have the manual, the procedure for this is included. If not a quick web search will get it for you.
      Your belt is the next thing to check if adjustment doesn't work. You didn't specify which sub-model you have but if it similar to the HRX217 TDA then also check to make sure the return spring is intact and connected. I posted a video on the transmission removal that will help identify where this spring is.

      You need to take everything off the axle, remove the bushings, clean them really good inside, perhaps have to smooth down the axle surfaces where the bushings go,, a little lube, and it will work fine until enough dirt, moisture, grass, etc., gets back in between the bushing and the axle, and you will have to do it again, Thank you Honda for this absolutely disaster of a design that should have had some sort of seals on both sides of the this axle/bushing place, so it would not allow dirt, etc., to get back in there again, and make us all have to go through this nosebleed, again and again !!! And yes, I will NEVER buy another Honda Mower...

  • @KSMike1

    I’ve got a weird one going on now. On my HRX217HXA, I service the pinions, ratchets & springs every two years, most recently this past spring. It ran & worked like a new machine all summer & fall. A few days ago I tried to use it to mow up some leaves (after sitting for 2-3 weeks); all was well for about 6 passes, then the RR wheel started locking up intermittently. By the time I got it back to the garage, both rear wheels were frozen in both directions, whether the engine was running or not. It was about 50F at the time, so it was cool but not freezing.
    Tomorrow I’ll tear into it, but I’m pretty familiar with all those workings and I don’t understand how this is even possible. It doesn’t seem like it would be the transmission since the axle shafts don’t even turn when rolling forward with the drive disengaged, yet what are the odds of both sides locking up within minutes of each other, independently? It almost acts like the ratchets both came out somehow and got jammed between the pinions and shafts (not possible, but that’s how it feels).

    • @veteranssmallenginerepair5934
      @veteranssmallenginerepair5934  5 років тому +3

      This is a weird one. I suspect the ratchet key area. Check the keys, slots, springs and pinions for wear or debris. Let me know what you find. My email is in the description. Thanks for watching!

    • @KSMike1

      What a mess. I took the left wheel off first and laying down inside the ribs of the wheel were the outer snap ring, outer collar, pinion gear, inner collar, ratchet, and plenty of metal shavings. Basically all the drive related components on the left side came off. I have NO idea how that happened; again it mowed a good-sized lawn every three days from mid-spring to mid-fall, and never missed a beat. When I service this area I closely inspect the snap rings for wear, rounded corners, etc. and they were fine (maybe even new) in the spring.
      With nothing holding the left side of the transmission assembly in place, the whole assembly moved from left to right, allowing the right side pinion gear to ride too far inboard on the axle shaft (the ratchet was turning normally but it wasn’t engaging the pinion because it was out of position).
      The ribs on both rear wheels are bent and a little chewed up but I think they’ll work fine still. I think the pinions and springs are OK but one ratchet’s corners are rounded over so I’ll replace those.
      The axle shafts still turn freely so hopefully the transmission is fine, but I’m not sure the right axle shaft isn’t badly chewed up. I guess I’ll go ahead and pull the whole thing out for inspection, shaft cleanup, replace shaft bushings in the adjusters, etc. Not looking forward to this.

      The ratchet keys can be installed upside down after repairs and cause this problem. Also the pinion gears can be installed backwards. The correct installation is ratchet key round edge facing into the axle slot and flat areas inside the pinion gear toward the rear of the mower.

      @@veteranssmallenginerepair5934 You have pointed out one easy to make mistake. I know because I too once confused the direction of the pinion gear when reassembling the rear wheels. However, there's another more profound problem affecting certain Honda mowers and also preventing rollback that was the subject of a Honda service bulletin (#107). The axle bushing in the height adjustment plate was incorrectly sized causing the axle to corrode and bind. This requires replacement of those plates on both sides. (Some people report temporary success cleaning corrosion off of the axle where it passes through the adjuster bushing.) Although the Honda bulletin is from 2017, it only became well known after you posted your video in early 2018. In addition, poor cable adjustment can prevent easy rollback (and the cable adjustment itself is easy to get wrong). So there are at least 3 possible reasons why these mowers might not roll back. As far as I have seen - and I should say that I am just a Honda mower owner, and not in the yard machine trade - the transmissions do not fail.
      I thought your observations and suggestion regarding removal and replacement of the rear wheels were helpful and clear.

      @@veteranssmallenginerepair5934 "toward" the rear, I agree. But in my book that means FACING the front. But I appreciated the clear explanation of the ordering of all the bits. That short bolts holding the plastic plate on is interesting. I don't have them on my 10 y.o. HRX 537. I have just a hole which I too k to be for grease. At a certain position of the lever the hole in the plastic aligns with a non-threaded hole in the metal plate. On one wheel the lever was frozen stuck by rust, hence I thought/think it's for grease. Everything removed (obviously dismantling more than undertaken her), wire-wheeled, two costs of spray paint lightly smeared with grease... But I wasn't sure about the order of all the bits!So this has been most helpful. Thank you!

      @gr8ful4EPdedhed 3 роки тому

      @Boogie Man I saw a video a while back but can’t find it now. I think what’s happening is if the belt is still gripping the pulley just a little it’s not enough to move forward but locks the wheels up. The pulley has to be completely free from the belt for wheels to roll back. I bought the new Honda model last year and already my smart drive stopped working. I tried the cable adjustment and it allowed it to move forward however now it’s locking up the wheels in reverse. I looked at the belt and it looks worn ( I mow professionally ). I must of had to tighten it down enough to make it drive but now it won’t release the pulley. If I tab on the accelerator it will free the wheels up sometime. I’m going to put a new belt on and see if that fixes it

    Flats? Facing? Unclear what you are terming 'flats' which must be 'facing' the back of the machine . Seems to be inside the gear cavity. Is it the horizontal slot? Being horizontal it is perpendicular and doesn't seem to have a rearward or forward orientation. One side of the gear faces the mower deck and the other side faces outward; again not facing the back of the machine. Thanks in advance for your clarification.

    Great video and easy to follow! Do you have a video on how to get the bottom plastic cover off to gain access to the belt and gear box? My hrm 215 sometimes rolls back, but sometimes the wheels lock up and it seems to be when the drive bar doesnt fully return. So I re-engage and then disengage the drive bar and then it allows me to roll it back again but it has a lot of resistance and seems stiff with a lot of effort to pull the mower backwards. I think there might be something hung up on the cable that is preventing the sell propelled drive bar from snapping down and fully returning to the disengaged position. Really annoying! Any ideas on what to look for here or what might be the problem? Also occasionally the sell propelled will be working fine then half way through mowing it will just stop working. Belt looks fine.

      I don't have that particular model but I found some info on one of the forums. 30year Tech on doityourself.com posted the following ;
      "The rear baffle needs to be removed from the mower deck to access the transmission. To do this you need to remove two rear engine mounting bolts as this also holds this baffle in, then there is a bolt pretty much in the middle of the baffle that screws up into the discharge chute area, this bolt needs to be removed (look in the chute area directly above this bolt and you will see a threaded plate that sits in a depression in the chute, sometimes you need to spray some lube on it as they can get corrosion on them). Finally there is a bolt on the left side of the mower deck behind the drive wheel; this one needs to be removed as well as the spacer underneath the bolt. Once these mounting bolts have been removed then you can pull the baffle down and out of the mower.
      With the baffle out, you will have access to the transmission and can rotate the transmission forward to gain slack in the drive belt for removal and installation. There should be a spring that hooks on the top of the transmission and extends back to a tab on the mower deck. this spring pulls back on the transmission to keep tension on the belt once installed.
      Once the new belt in on the transmission then just reinstall the baffle and you should be good to go."
