This is a Walstad Method tank. The credit goes to Diana Walstad for publishing the organic soil substrate method.
Check out her book in the link below if interested.
I made a full tutorial of how I did it. Hope this helps.

The light is an obscure brand Klarmax light. 35cm (14inches) long. It came with a 24W PFL compact florescent light. I changed it to an 18W one. It takes 4 pin compact florescent light, and I couldn’t find a light that was lower than 18W and daylight color, or 6500K.
You can use any kind of florescent or compact florescent. For a 5 gallon tank, 12~14 watt should be plenty. You can go as low as 10W.
The wires and clips and sleeve are picture frame hanging wire and accessories.
This setup is the same as my previous tanks: the 7.5 gallon bowl and the 5 gallon tall.
The only difference is that I will not be starting out with any livestock. Only thing I would like to have done differently is the 18w lamp. I think the wattage is too high. I usually go for 2~3 watts per gallon rule. Hopefully the height adjustment works out.
I’ll be documenting the progress of this tank more in detail until the balance is achieved.

I've been in the hobby a long time and it's really neat seeing how things have changed. I remember in the late 90's early 00's the thought of using a garden soil with compost as the fertilizing layer was a crazy idea for a hobbyist. You have to think, compost is a material that is so high in nitrogen that when a pile in the garden is turned over the nitrogen burn is so hot that it kills any pathogens. I know expert hobbyists have been using methods like this for a long time. But this was before you could find anything on the Internet, it was difficult to share experiences; and a huge percent of what you learned was from monthly subscription magazines, which are loaded with advertisers pushing their products as the best method. Advances in lighting has helped a ton as well. I had tanks with a silly number of t12s and they produced a ton of heat. Oops wasn't planning on posting this much, but it is fun and interesting to look back.

The tank is setup is very cool, and in the long run will work. The only problem with running a filterless tank is that it requires more frequent water changes, and if the balance of light to plants is not correct algae will grow like crazy. Other than that it can be done with success.

This series is so interesting! I've always been a huge fan of small, contained environments like this one. The result of this set up is just wonderful, and I'm watching every update!
And, oh, I'd recognize Erik Satie's music anywhere. Great choices! Kevin Macleod is such a great musician too, he played those notes so good.

Thanks...but I don't think that's fair. He does his thing very well I think. I don't think I could ever build a huge acrylic tank, knock down a wall to install a tank, pour concrete to make a tank, or build a wooden tank. mad respect for the guy.

I agree with ad78. K is seems to be focusing his channel on spending the donated money on fishes. Now, he should change his name to something like king of acrylic and plaster or king of empty videos. Moreover, it is too bad he does not know how to maintain a tank without changing 50% of the water every week.

It's Aquascaping or Aquatic Gardening, I guess. Since it's only a 5 gallon (20 liter) tank, then I would go without any fish.

Until the water is properly cycled and the plant and microbe systems have been fully established, there is a large fluctuation in water chemicals that can be deadly to fish and other aquatic animals. The fish get put in a few weeks to a few months later, once everything has stabilized.
