It's what happens to them when they are finished on the track that concerns me. I am sure they are cared for when they are useful.

@@christinakurtz7755 Sometimes. Churchill Downs and other racetracks support and partner with aftercare facilities for rehoming Thoroughbreds. But because of the vast over-breeding that goes on, a lot are sent to slaughterhouses overseas. Of course, many people take time to purchase them before that happens, and give them a new life. But it all depends. Sometimes there are too many.

There are now a lot of barriers to ensure TBs get good homes, but unfortunately some horrendous people willingly sell their horses in slaughter or kill pens, even with barriers like The Ferdinand Fee and TAA. Its extremely upsetting and those people need to found and punished. This also happens in every horse sport sadly. Its a huge systemic issue that needs to end and horse racing is just one industry that could lead to that horrible ending for horses but its the one that is highlighted the most. Thankfully as for what I'm seeing most OTTBs are getting good homes and more recognition is being put into these animals.

Anyone that made a dollar in the sport, spent thousands to get there. I have worked around horses and for the most part . The people I have been around. Have cared and loved these horses. Like they are family. Say what you want but I have never met more people with true intgreraty in all of the people in other walks of life.

When I was 11yrs old my mother took me to riding lessons equestrian and fell in love with horses. Im retired dental laboratory technician crown and bridge laboratory. I also am a retired professional exercise rider. Owners and trainers used me to do full work outs. I was the perfect size . 5 "1' weighed around 123 . I started off at Suffolk Downs racetrack which is beautiful racetrack. Now the casino was built in Everett ma. Suffolk Downs has simlucasting. I went to other racetracks in the winter of 1985 Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Florida.

@@sarcasticdrag0n603 It all depends. I love horse racing, and at it's bare bones, the concept is fun and exciting. But in order for it to go all the way, and truly be a better sport, people need to quit drugging, cut over breeding, ban whips and start Thoroughbreds at an older age. No hate to everyone in the industry, of course. There are some genuinely good teams.

@@lorraineclark5028 Some people send them to Thoroughbred rehoming programs (which racetracks like Churchill Downs support with donations). Others place them in claiming races, and they're bought by new trainers. Sometimes the horses do better with a different running style, jockey, tack set, etc. A lot of times, when Thoroughbred's are sold to slaughterhouses, the owners and team involved never find out. It's swept under the rug. They don't have anything to do with it (normally). It happens illegally quite often. Others buy horses straight off the track, take them to their stable, and retrain them. It wouldn't happen as frequently if they'd just stop forcing stallions to over breed. But, that's greedy people, they want to find the best of the bunch, use 'em for a few short years, and sell 'em to stud.

The tie up is a bungle cord with a snap on each end (like a dog lead). There is a screw eye in the wall to attach it to. It's much safer than tying a rope around a post or something. Forty-five is still young.🙂

I have an OTTB and her old owner when she was racing still breeds and races horses and if you look at him online he seems like he absolutely loves his horses and they look beautiful and have a beautiful property but I can see everyday the trauma she has from that bullshit place. Just because things look nice doesn’t mean they are nice. There’s no reason my horse should have been raced at 2 years old. That’s not healthy, they didn’t just ride her at 2 they raced her multiple times. her body wasn’t even developed yet. Horses can run fast but they aren’t meant to be pushed like that. This is what they want you to see, you don’t see them not giving the horse food after they don’t place in a race which is very common and why so many ottbs have problems with food and freak out if you’re 10 minutes late because they think they aren’t going to get any at all.

    • @cincoslife3036

@@cincoslife3036 nobody on tbe track sends them to slaughter. when horses retire from racing or they dont enjoy it they are sold to non racing homes to do another job like jumping, dressage or to be a lesson horse (hence on the sale ads you see "sold to non racing home only"). horses end up in slaughter long after racing if one dipshit sends them there and that has nothing to do with racing. Please educate yourself before speaking.

@@marymartin8763 Exactly. Horse racing at its bare bones is a fun concept. Horse and rider rushing to the finish. But the Thoroughbreds involved in the sport have too much strain on their legs, because they are so young. They need to be raced at four or five, not two and three. And drugging, with some owners and trainers, seems to be a big factor. Alongside over-breeding and whips. Although they typically tap their shoulders, it can become aggressive, especially if you are keen on winning. They need to be banned. If people would focus on these things, and improve them, it could be fun for everyone...

  • @joannabrites9857

It’s a shame most end up for slaughter. This is an old barbaric sport that needs to end. As humans I had hoped we evolved past this but no! There’s money to be made so no! Don’t let these people fool you, when there done racing off they go for meat. I see it every week at my local horse auction. Don’t support horse racing. These horse have life long emotional and physical damage.
