These look wonderful! I've never had a meaty Mooncake. All the ones I had in Changchun were the store bought fruity pastry type. They reminded me of western fruitcake. I can't wait to try these.

I'd like to try making a vegetarian version of this. Do you think radish balls would work here, instead of minced meat? I found a few recipes that use grated radish held together with tapioca or corn starch, sometimes with carrots, mushrooms, or tofu. Or, do you have any other suggestions that could work well inside of a flaky bun?
This moon cake version is different from the sweet one and I don't think I have ever tasted this before, but I like it. It's a good version of the steamed buns. It's also similar to a hand pie. Great recipe! 👍 😊
can i make the doughs with coconut oil instead of butter so it's kosher and can i use chicken/beef/lamb (ground) instead of pork as well for the same reasons?
Mandy, mooncakes with pork ? Most of them are sweet, some with salted duck egg yolks, but i did not heard about pork moon cakes ... You of course know mooncakes better, but for me it is something new.
Traditional mooncake is vegetarian. No butter for the making dough. Only flour and vegetable oil. Inside filling are made from either red bean, yam, green bean and lotus.

Im so excited to make these. I refuse to not have some type of mooncake 😂. I’m not too much of a sweet girl, I prefer savoury dishes
My dad told me last week that traditional moon cakes had meat. All the moon cakes I’ve ever had had egg yolk, red bean, or peanuts. I was surprised.
