In today's episode we begin the long drive from Netherlands to Norway. We pass through multiple boarders, change our plans last minute and when we think we are getting a bargain well…. But that’s the least of our worries. This week we experience our worst travel moment yet!

I know it doesn’t help in a situation like that,but it’s only money in the end. You have your health, a working van, no one has been injured or hurt. It’s lovely to see you smiling and happy. Don’t let something like this spoil your trip.
Is there no advisory when booking the ferry for an animal?( Can't believe they actually charge for a dog to stay in the van). I think they need to make the tapeworm medication requirement very clear before boarding at Hirstals.
Thanks both and sadly not. I know as a dog owner I should be looking up the rules and requirements. I also know some have expressed that it isn't the ferry companies problem. But when a human books a ticket, you get an email which tells you what you need to do and bring. Why not when I paid for Onyx to join, the confirmation email states the requirements too. I imagine it's probably because they want the £600 😄

So sorry for your mishap with the tapeworm treatment. We are used to it going to the UK. What I don't understand is why the ferry operator didn't check that on boarding. P&O or DFDS wouldn't even let a dog board without proof the necessary treatments have been done when we cross to the UK.
Yes, I travel a lot but never to Scandinavia, it was silly of me really to presume Norway was in the EU but I guess you live and you learn and that hefty bill will certainly make me learn quicker 😂. I appreciate it is on us dog owners to look up the rules but when booking the ferry and adding a dog ticket, you’d think there would be a nice little reminder 🙃. Maybe they split the profit 🤷🏻♀️😂
Thanks for sharing, I will also be travelling from the NLs to Norway with my dog in a few weeks and I didn’t know about the worming either!
It’s so hard to remember who is in the EU/ in Schengen but not the EU, so much to consider when travelling. I’m glad our mishap will save you some trouble though 🤗. If you drive through Sweden, you need to register your dog online too, I’ve learnt my lesson so the best advice I can give is check every countries rules and don’t presume like I did 😆

Make sure you get a certificate from your veterinarian for all vaccines, worming etc
I cannot even imagine the stress you went through with having to give Onyx over ☹️ so many rules with travel especially nowadays so don’t feel silly for it!! Really enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing the good and the bad!

In the very north of Norway Lofoten, this is a place where the sun never sets. It stays daylight 24/7. Norway's beautiful.
We are not too far from the Arctic circle now and I can’t wait to see the midnight sun with our own eyes 🤗

Oh my heart broke for you... Our little black pug always barks when she watches Onyx but she didn't when you were saying goodbye 😭 like she knew you were in distress.... Biggest loves ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It was a really crap experience but made better that there were 2 pugs lol. That is so sweet too! Dogs just know don’t they, bet she was like, who’s Ruby and hope he’s ok 😂
I almost got caught out coming from uk to Ireland with the tapewormer,luckily I nipped in to my vet a few days before and they mentioned it. They did check aswell so I was so glad we got it!
With everything that has been going on in the world and all the new requirements to get across borders it’s so easy to make a mistake. Obviously this was my fault but £600 is nuts. I’m glad you realised before you set off 🥰

Onyx is adorable. I truly hope they picked up that sweet pug girl. I hope her family came for her. There's so many different rules I think it's easy to miss one. This made me be more vigilant of them.
They did fortunately! otherwise we may have had to take her with us she was soo sweet! they turned up just as we were leaving. Exactly! we live and we learn, unfortunately it was an expensive mistake, but one we are sure not to repeat now! thanks for watching Lucy.|

I only knew this because I watched the campervibe channel last week. It was good to see how well the authorities handled the situation.
For a really sh*t situation and me being in the wrong, they really did handle it with kindness and I am grateful I learnt my lesson there of all places 😄

We were in Amsterdam for 10 days sleeping in a rental car, and Norway is one of our favourite countries - UA-cam algorithm at it's finest! Norway is incredible. You'll be getting the midnight sun, no doubt? This time of year. Check out Senya in the north if you're going that far?!
Also, Norway will be mega, mega, mega expensive for petrol!

I'm happy that everything turned out well. Sorry for the huge price tag and separation anxiety. Things get by us sometimes, no matter how we plan. It's normal to panic, but no need to blame yourselves. These things happen. I hope Onyx had fun in the water.

Devastated for you guys. We really feel for you, we have two beagles and would have been distraught if we had had to leave them. £600 is a total rip off, but we think you like us would have paid whatever it cost. Try to put it behind you and enjoy this amazing trip.

Oh bless you… this bloody tape worm thing is a nightmare… we take our dogs to France and even our vets is confused with it all and the paperwork, plus we now have the well overinflated cost of the pills that end…. Looks like the kennels were lovely people though and he was well cared for…and you were so gracious owning it as your mistake… deffo subscribing now x
It is all a nightmare! since Brexit everything has been so difficult, especially with Schengen.. the man who ran the pet hotel was absolutely fabulous! definitely has a passion for helping animals, so we felt like onyx had a good night in the cells 😂, maybe another one might have toughened him up a little! thanks for watching!

It was a horrible situation, I’m just glad it happened in Norway over other countries and we are all together now 🥰
I think that this cost does seem high as a Norwegian
BUT vet care is expensive here. Just a consult can cost over 1000nok. Vets actually earn more than doctors here and pets are treated as a luxury. They have to have a vet with the animals 100% of the time and then the costs of keeping the animals. As you saw, there are many animals that have to go into quarantine. I remember moving from South Africa to the UK in the 90s. We were told out dog needed a six month quarantine...and in those days we were looking at several thousand pounds to cover it. I understand the shock, but good on you guys for owning it! I appreciate the way you took responsibility, so few others do that and just blame Norway! Yes Norway nis expensive compared to other countries, but most Norwegians understand that we have an excellent quality of life and the prices are affordable to us. You guys have taken this well, so good on you!

You’re right, it was only 24 hours! but those were not expected for poor little Onyx, he thought he would get a nice warm lord welcome into Norway, the little pig in there was absolutely adorable!

Traveling with pets is amazing, but since Brexit, there is so much you have to research and we completely forgot that Norway was no longer within the EU, with us taking a ferry it wasn’t possible for us to just dip back across the border! Oh awesome! whereabouts in the balkans? we are yet to venture there in the van yet!

Also, certain dog breeds aren’t allowed in all countries, I learnt that when reading the form which I didn’t really know about 😫
You guys are perfect for one another😍 I felt bad for you guys, having to pay all that money & having to part with Onyx. But I am glad that they took such good care of him. I have heard that it can be difficult traveling with animals. But, 24 hours isn’t long, & hopefully that won’t ever happen again!!!

Norway has some absolutely breathtaking scenery! unfortunately it makes it incredibly difficult to enjoy when you have to just experience it through the van window, since the rain was terrible! continuous for over two whole weeks 😂.

Don't miss out on Dovrefjell, I'm not even living in Norway (live in Sweden) but we always took that route to see our relatives in Trondheim.. had some fun snowball fights with my brother in the hight of the summer there 😁 and the waterfalls and myskox(like bisons)
Thank you so much for the recommendation! however, due to the absolutely horrendous amount of rain we received, we decided to scarper! living in a van and being constantly wet do not mix, maybe if we return one day (by flights 😂) we will visit these, absolutely would have LOVED to have seen the wild Moose and Myskox, unfortunately they didnt want to reveal themselves to us :( we tried in Sweden too, even a nature park didnt have them in 😂 the only animal not in its “pen”.

@9:36 Reminds me of a place here in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver BC. The water here at Belcarra Regional Park is the Pacific Ocean. We see seals and all sorts of marine life.

haha we have only ever got the van to 90 on the autobahn in Germany! probably never again, unless we hit the Nurburgring 😂🤘🏼. We’re very conscious of fuel economy now with the insanely high cost of diesel!

A good tip for remembering conversion rates - write them in a note on your phone, screenshot and can make it your lock screen for easy quick maths! :) If you can bear to change your wallpaper from Lord Onyx haha.

That is criminal and they ripped you off. I feel so bad for you. My dog is my family, my child. I cannot imagine the stress and sadness of being in that situation. At least it's for one night only.
It was a crazy 24hrs. I appreciate I didn’t get the tape work treatment but the options given, the price, all of it was quite drastic in my opinion. I’m just glad to have Onyx back with us safely and happy 🥰
Grass must cost more there? We have grass everywhere here. I dont think theres any yard in Red deer that dorsnt have a grassy lawn
Oh my goodness, it was traumatic watching Onyx having to be quarantined! I'm glad it all worked out.
Also, as someone who lives in drought stricken Southern California, that grass looked amazing and I wish I could roll in it!😁 I never would have made it on that hike though because I have Meniere's Disease which affects the equilibrium. I'd have to belly crawl through the trough and I'm just picturing splinters galore. Yeah, no! Lol

That is ridiculous to make you choose putting down the dog or pay a ransom! It's not a lot but sent you a small thank you on paypal to help towards that.
They gave us some crazy options! I really do appreciate there needs to be protocol but for an honest mistake it was very hefty and very much felt like a ransom. That’s so amazing of you, you really didn’t have to but it really means a lot! Thank you 🥰🤟🏼

The burger story reminds me of my time in Sweden, the cheapest burger was 25€, and I literally ate it for about an hour and I was crying, cause back then I had no money and no savings, but I was still traveling like crazy :)
😂 yesterday we shared a pizza and chips, surprisingly was a decent portion for 2. I was crying trying to finish it as I wanted my moneys worth. I’m glad it didn’t stop you travelling 🧳

When travelling from the UK to 🇧🇻 do Fjord line stipulate that your dog has to have the tapeworm treatment at a vets in Denmark before you travel to Norway? as we are looking at doing the same route with our 2 Spaniels 🐶

Omg how can they do that, that's horrible. I have 2 dogs now I could not be parted from them. My eldest dog who was 12 and a half recently passed away it was nasty, she passed on 2nd of April it still feels like yesterday. Hope he's OK when u get him back xx

Oh I cried so hard when Onyx had to go into quarantine. I imagined if it was my sweet Penny, would have broke my heart.
It was a crazy experience, glad it’s over and done with and now just have to hope I’ve learnt my lesson 😩

Camper Vibe had their pets treated for tapeworms before entering Denmark very recently. You should watch their videos. They are so thorough.
They are a few weeks behind us on their trip, if only they were ahead so we didn't make this expensive mistake 😥 But also you don't need Tapeworm for Denmark, we got through to Denmark perfectly fine 🥰

I watch loads of travel blogs because it's something we used to do in the 70's. THEN AS NOW, every one gets robbed in Scandanavia, esp Norway. ( would love to know the % of people who've been once, actually go back again ? )
€14 for a burger is standard across the nordics unless its a maccyD's type of place where its cheaper. Keep a look out for elk, venison, and/or reindeer burgers.
It was £14 so maybe like €16, in the UK minimum wage is £9.50 if you’re over 23. It makes me sad that it would take 1.5hrs to afford a burger with some plain crisps 😫
@@nicroams I use to live and work in the uk, now live in northern Finland. Berry season will be here in a few weeks, I recommend you check the rules for collecting and eating them as they change depending where you are in Norway. But if you come to sweden and/or Finland you can collect as many berries and mushrooms as you want.
It not your fault alot of times they don't tell you this until you get there. We almost lost our dog when we got stationed to Germany with American air force.

What, 600 quit for a one day quarantine! Wow, that must have dug a deep hole in your budget.
I would have just turned around and went back to Denmark! Given the cost of everything in Norway and 700 on top... But it'd be the shock of parting with my dog on top of that... I wouldn't want to stay in the country .
Unfortunately we couldn’t as there was no ferry back. So we were only left with the 2 options. If we could have returned I would have to save on the money 😢
@@nicroams He looked well when you got him back and you had a lovely day while he waiting for him so it all ended okay... Apart from that horrendous charge! I guess travelling, one can balance out the really inexpensive countries with the super expensive ones. Tg it was only a one night quarantine.. wow but what a shock for you. I laughed at the cost of the burger. But I remember a few years ago I think it was in Switzerland seeing the price list for Burger King and the cheapest burger meal was 18Euro ! In Ireland at the time that meal cost 7Euro. Ay least you got a decent sized one for your 14 pound!
