I live in Punta Gorda. Unless you work remote, are in IT/Service/Medical or you are TOTALLY retired, don't move here.
This is mostly an old people town where everything is busy from 6am - 2pm. You can go out, but be prepared for things to close earlier than your Ft. Myers/Sarasota places, where they close at 10pm-12am at most.
Fisherman's Village/Gilchrist Park/Ponce De Leon is crowded in the months of November-April. They close early on weekdays.
Boca Grande is nice if you can go right before sunset. But note: the island is in LEE county, NOT Charlotte, so be prepare to pay a toll to go over the bridge.
Past that, this is also a seasonal town/city. Once tourist season is over, you are most likely going to be let go of the job, unless you have seniority.
You NEED a car to get to places here. If you live next to your Walmart, please have your stuff delivered, because most of the time the stores are overly crowded in tourist season, or get in the stores by 7am at most. If you can get out to the stores at night like I do, then that will be your best chance to shop in peace. Most people are in their houses by 7-8pm around here, so it gets real quiet.
Unlike the city places, Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte takes forever to get things in stock, so if it is out, sorry buddy, order online.

I've lived in Punta Gorda twenty years too long. There is NOTHING to do here. If your a young family with children, stay away. Not only will they be bored out of their minds, but the school system is awful. Most people are NOT friendly. In fact, they're quite snobbish. We have more car dealerships, and auto part stores than restaurants, and that's okay by me since the restaurants are nothing to rave about. Punta Gorda does not have heavy traffic even in season. That's a plus for us atleast. Off season there are times I'm the only car on the road, and in season you might have 10-20 cars ahead of you. Far cry from big cities. Luckily Sarasota and Ft Myers are just a short drive away if you want to experience better eateries and shopping.

We moved out of PGI before Hurricane Charlie hit. That was a God Send! It is the kind of town where they take the sidewalks in at 7 p.m. Fisherman’s Village has restaurants that will sell you amberjack and claim it is grouper. The Celtic Rey is a good place to hang out. That is if it is still there? There are a variety of people there from the NY Snobs to the local Crackers. Fishing in the canals was marginal. To much chemical runoff from lawn fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides. Though the humidity was less stifling than that up in Illinois in the Summer. The Gulf Coast breezes tempered it. But - go inland and things change Quickly!

I ;lived most of my life in Michigan and used to hate the heat and humidity. I lived for a time in Ft Lauderdale and found the humidity was very bad there year round unless you lived on the intercoastal or ocean it was miserable. Here I find it only bad during June through the beginning of October. They spray for mosquitoes here and I haven't been bitten by any. The fire ants can be a problem outside but other than that I've had not bug infestation in the yard or house. Oh yea, last May the lovebugs were heavy.

Now some words from someone who has lived in PG since 86, Punta Gorda has horrible leadership. The Sherriff shrugs off his officers breaking the law, The police chief refuses to listen to concerns from citizens dismissing them with "Do you even live here". Now they have an ordinance stripping the first amendment away. Unless you need RV storage ( Close to six new facilities in under a year) stay away from Charlotte county and Punta Gorda.

Everyone drives 10mi over the speed limit here youre not worth a ticket. Perhaps if Flroida's roads wasn't so shit people wouldn't be forced to stay in the left lane to make a turn and we all know that no one is going to let you lane change. Lets be real you almost always have to drive a mile or more if you want to change directions and the roads are some of the smallest lanes in the nation.

I live in Punta Gorda specifically a Deep Creek resident. I strongly disagree with a lot of these things. Port Charlotte has 60kplus people. I come from a small town. This is nothing like a small midwestern farming village. Temperatures do get down to 30-40 degrees during winter months. Sportsman paradise my ass. There isnt one hunting store in Port Charlotte. Now it does have a lot of fishing opportunities but mostly any good fishing is from a boat. Other than that there are a few hidden gems where you can access the peace river. Any interior body of water that you use a satellite to locate is 98-99% fenced off and unavailable to the public. As far as hunting Florida is suppose to give great access to all year round no limit Boar and Axis deer hunting. The only problem with that is every land that you can actually hunt is owned by an WMA and each section has their own rules, regulations, and times that you are and are not allowed to hunt. So unless youre a land owner dont expect to get alot of free hunting action. That being said Punta Gorda does have friendly people but the customer service is slow and the people dont seem to know alot about their perspective fields. You will get referred back to the original referrer in alot of cases. The food here is amazing and there is a small comedy club life to enjoy. Punta Gorda also features country clubs golf courses and some areas for mudding if you know where to look. Advisory its techniqually illegal to mud in this district but typically its overlooked. Expect to pay $4 plus for a gallon of milk and dairy products are ridiculous compared to the Midwest. Note milk as of this date is 98cents per gallon in my home town. In general just expect a much higher cost of living. Still if you're a retiree this could be a great place to settle down but defiantly expect a different lifestyle than country living. Its true what they say Florida is the only state the further south you go the more north it becomes.
