It’s definitely a niche market but there are people out there who want it. For example, I’ll be buying one so I can play PS5 games when I visit family for the holidays but don’t want to lug my PS5 with me. Or even when I want to play a simplistic game before bed that doesn’t require quick reaction time. Games like Unpacking, Lego Builders Journey or Telltale games can all be enjoyed while I’m laying in bed.
At least allow the PlayStation Portal to connect to Public WiFi networks by supporting login authentication via browser for Public WiFi networks that require web browser authentication before the network connects. Not being able to connect to majority of the public WiFi networks is just ridiculously disappointing imo as the whole 'PS5 on the go' thing literally falls apart and this is one of the key selling points of the system. Not picking it up until this issue is fixed...

Great watch as always 👊🏿, i like this device but im still kinda annoyed that PlayStation missed an opportunity to just bring a new handheld instead. Coz the portal is useful but basically cant function on its own since its just a remote play device rather than a standalone device like the other handhelds on the market.

Because the steam deck doesn’t require a constant Wi-Fi connection to be used, neither does It need to be used with 10 metres of the PS5 and can play far more than digital only ps5 games

I'm in love with this device! Got mine on the 15th because I pre-ordered directly from the Playstation company and for $200, it's WELL worth the money!! I'm no longer confined to a single space in my house! I've played this in my room, laying on my bed, outside on the porch, and yes on the toilet too! Just bought Cyberpunk 2077 and this is made for that game!! Plus I can commit to that game for more longer times now!
Buying a switch makes more sense even if you already own a ps5 as that will open a while new library of exclusives and you can play offline single games in any corner of the world

Honestly if you could bare minimum install 1 digital game onto it to just play and just swap out and download a new game when you want to play something else while offline, I'm pretty sure this would have better overall reception. As it stands though its a niche product aimed at a very specific kind of person, only works if you own a ps5 and only if you have access to a stable wifi connection (assuming that's possible where you live.). The sad part is that people will fight tooth and nail for it's existence even though Sony could have made this better, but nope, they chose the route that makes people buy more ps5s and forced remote play to said ps5.

Just become available to pre order in Australia. I ordered one, couldn't help myself. It would be nice though if I could take it away with me on holidays and play my library on it. Hopefully they have an update in the future where that will be possible
The ps5 controller is notorious for stick drift. And that is basically their controller split in half super glued to a screen. No Bluetooth support either. If you don't own a ps5 then it's basically a table decoration.
Sold after using it for just two days. Even on 100 MBPS wifi speed, it lags heavily. I have played Horizon Zero Dawn. If idle the graphics are crisp. Once you start moving player, the garphic quality reduces drastically.
If they don't change the price and add these features then I'll be happy: - ps plus streaming directly from the catalog like on PC without a need to own a PS4/PS5 over wifi - Bluetooth headphones support for any headphones I think that's all I need and I'll be happy with it. Just doing remote play alone doesn't do it for me since I already have a PC connected to every tv in my house and I can play remote play or ps plus streaming from any TV or I can just use my laptop or phone as a monitor with a dualshock 4.
I have a tv on the wall for me and one on the unit for the missus. I have one in the bedroom for retro gaming and 2 spares in the cupboard. I have no need for this product yet somehow, I still want it.
At home with a wired ps5 mine works great. It's feasible to be somewhere not home if you use a hotspot, but reallly wouldn't recommend playing that way.

Its not for everyone nothing is really if it works for you it is great.i only have a ps5 for gaming and i work night shifts at place with really good wifi and lots of downtime. it is perfect for me.i can just lay back on the recliner relax and play which is not possible with ipad and controller.
If someone made this controller grips that can go into a laptop tablet like a surface pro then that would be way better than this in terms of functionality
I honestly think PlayStation missed an opportunity to make a proper successor to the Vita/PSP. I understand that the Vita bombed pretty hard, but now’s the time. With the constant influx of indie devs cranking out software, there would never be something not to play. As well as ports of older PlayStation games and whatever else they could get there hands on. I mean, they would really only need to make like one or two first party games a year and the rest would be all set. The Portal might take off, but I’m feeling like people are going to find more reasons not to buy one than to buy one. When it comes down to it, it’s just a smaller TV to play your PS5 on the toilet with… that’s pretty much it. And to be honest, I’m not sure I even trust it for that. There’s going to be latency, I just hope it’s not so much that people won’t play any games that require quick fingers for (like almost every game nowadays). And yes I know, “it’s not for you then” or “just don’t buy it”. I get it, just wanted to please my case for the PSP2 (the Vitas cursed).

It's for households with limited TV's, people who want to play at a friend's house, on vacation, etc. The Japanese market is perfect for it. I'm a parent with 3 kids and one TV. This is great. There's a reason it sold out quickly.
If it also works from a distance over the internet (like me being at my mum's house where I wouldn't be able to plug in any PlayStation older than 3 and my PlayStation still being at my home) then it would be practical. I tried using my Vita for remote play but that one unfortunately oy worked if both devices were no further than one room apart.

You don't need to be within 10m of your PS5, it uses your WiFi network.
