Someone recently sent me a question asking how #Christianity can be true if #Judaism is false because isn't Christianity contingent upon Judaism?
You might be thinking that Judaism is a cause that eventually led to Christianity and in a causal sequence, if you remove an earlier cause, you don’t get the later strands of the sequence, right?

Protestant here regarding the jab against us around 2:00. Protestants do not deny the necessity of the church for passing along the scriptures, but we do deny that she possesses in herself infallible authority. The church of course can pass along the words of God, which are infallible, without having the same authority as the holy spirit that inspired them. Like a child who writes down a message from her mother to give to her teacher, the child is necessary for transmission but is not causitive of the note, nor does she possess the same authority that the mother has. Hope this provides some clarity!

Nothing is technically wrong with this explanation, but it’s the typically wrong framing a convert-seeking religion would impose on a system that is not concerned with conversion. When you grasp this you realize it’s apples and oranges. Rabbinic Judaism is not concerned with the things Christianity is at the deeper theological levels. That’s the place to start. The purpose of these two systems are different. Christianity is for saving the world for eternity. Rabbinic Judaism exists to save the Jewish corporal people (successfully I might add) for the Eschaton.

The problem is in how we define Judaism.
If by Judaism we mean the Faith of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, etc, then no, Judaism isn't false, it's clearly true. I would argue that it did not in fact end, but continues today in the Catholic Church in an unbroken continuity going back to the the Patriarchs.
However, if we mean the claims and practices of the sect of Jews who rejected, and continue to reject, Christ, as opposed to those who accepted the fulfillment, perfection and telos of the Faith of Abraham, et al, then yes, this thing called Judaism is a false religion as it refuses to come to it's logical conclusion in Christ.

  • @Know_The_Truth1
    @Know_The_Truth1 2 години тому

I think even though it started one way it's ending much differently. I would say that one religion accepts the fact and the other does not, ultimately you cannot say those collective people have done necessarily good things for other people in fact a lot of what they're doing is hurting people. God in his infinite mercy is Jewish and became Jewish to fulfill the prophecy, this is actually one of the conversations that I would like to have with God. I would say the people you know of the past are not the same of these people of the present these are two distinct different ideologies that form a collective identity.

It would seem to me that your portrayal both of "Judaism" and of "Christianity" fails to grasp the essence of any true religion through the vague and inconsistent use of these terms, for example this video does not stand this litmus test:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5: 17-18)
Or again, St Paul writes in Romans 11:
"I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am an Israelite...
God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew...
Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous.
Now if their transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full number.
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them.
For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch of dough; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place and have come to share in the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support the root; the root supports you.
Indeed you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."
That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief, but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in awe.
For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you either.
See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.
And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back into their own olive tree.
I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise in your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in, and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn away godlessness from Jacob; and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins."
In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs.
For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy.
For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!
"For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?"
"Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?"
For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen."
Is this not a sounder teaching with more effective analogies?

The Church didn't give us the bible. God did, through.... *drum roll* NOT THE CHURCH, but THE PEOPLE WHO WROTE IT DOWN. The Church as an institution is NOT the same thing as the collective body of followers of Christ. That's the fallacy of Catholicism. Shared Faith in One God: The Jewish faith, like Christianity, is monotheistic, worshipping the one true God, whom Christians recognize as the same God revealed through Christ. Catholics see their faith as a continuation and fulfillment of the Jewish faith, not a rejection of it (CCC 841).

Rabbinical Jewish teaching on King David's adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah is quite different from the Christian view of this powerful story of sin and repentance. For Rabbinical Judaism, David did nothing wrong; Bathsheba was technically divorced while her husband was at war and Uriah deserved death for disobeying the King's order to go sleep with his wife. If you doubt this, go look it up.

I’m not an expert and I could be wrong, but from what I have studied, supersessionism makes more logical sense than fulfilment theology. It’s also worth noting that the Catholic Church regarded supersessionism as valid and true all the way up until Vatican II.

Interesting. Never knew about this distinction before. I guess, in the end, the outcome is still the same. I would maybe guess that fulfillment is more "diplomatic"?

@@bushy9780 I think Vatican II can be a controversial topic among Catholics, but it does seem, to me at least, that the Church abandoned the supersessionism position for the fulfilment theology position to be more politically correct.

      @@gameover_LGOr how about theologically correct?

    • @gameover_LG
      @gameover_LG 6 годин тому

@@johnphipps4105 it very well could be. But then one would have to admit that previous doctors of the church like Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas, as well as previous popes and church fathers, were wrong over the past nearly two millennia. But like I said, I’m not an expert, and maybe upon further research and prayerful contemplation, I might come to change my mind. However, in this moment, supersessionism makes the most sense to me.

How can it be false ?
If so Christianity must be too.

Um... "the church" did not create the Bible. The Bible comes from time before the split between Orthodox-Catholic, followed by the further split of Catholic-Lutheran-Anglican-Presbyterian-Protestant....

The books of the Bible were compiled together into one book by St. Jerome in the fourth century. They were written in the first century by the leadership of the church

It is NOT clear the Josuha's in the Talmud are Jesus. They often appear either a century before Jesus or a century after him. We know from acts there other teachers named Jesus whoa re heretics.Acts 13:6-12.

Rabbinic Judaism is Old Testament Judaism as it comes from the Pharisees whom Jesus said succeeded Moses. The issue is NOT Rabbinic vs Old Testament Judaism which is the true Judaism(which is really a Protestant mentality if you ask me and a Protestant distinction). Rather the issue is does the New Testament succeed and fulfill Judaism and shouldn't Jews believe in Jesus? That answer to that is yes.
