I get that a lot. Just today a terrier mix was going nuts at Amber my GSD! His granddad was so imbarrassed, he made a point of saying, "It's my daughter's dog!" while the leash was at full length, the dog dancing on his back legs & crazily barking at Amber who avoided his eye contact & gently wagged her tail. I wish I had videoed the interaction. Amber finally sauntered slowly round about up to him & gave him a chance to get closer to her. Nose to nose, he was intimidating by her size & went non-reactive. LOL You have to teach your dogs how to interact. ❤️🐕‍🦺❤️

I like how she tried to fix this with obedience and eye contact and decided to get your help when she noticed it wasn't doing enough. Most people would feel their dogs are manageable enough and decide not to fix it completely. One of the most common things I hear (and can also agree with regarding some behaviors) is that they don't want to change their dogs personality too much. Thing is, whatever action you take, you're going to affect your dog's personality. Inaction will do more harm than good in that aspect.

That helps with the idea about the tune up at new places you go. And practicing walking by dogs barking through a fence. My puppy was traumatized by our neighbors black labs barking at her (they are there to guard sheep). She’s super reactive on the leash so I’ve been avoiding walking past their house but maybe working with her there will actually help.

Like you say, it feels like he is almost relieved now that I am in charge when he is on the leash. My dog is the exact same. Whines and flails at other dogs just because she is dead set on them. I’m realizing what leash pressure really means and how important it is to have the right gear. Tom said in another video that the gentle leader isn’t ideal because you can’t turn it off, meaning the pressure is always on.
I found that with the gentle leader she walked beside me but as walks went on- the pressure in my hand was always there, and that didn’t feel right. Almost felt like it added to her “dead set moments”...
I ordered a slip collar and I think that is really going to help. Thanks Tom! This is one of my favorite videos, ugh

My leave it command is starting to work better. I am teaching and reinforcing commands to my 2 year old Aussie mix I adopted 5 months ago during our play time. Today she saw a wild rabbit and did not get crazy when I issued the leave it command. About a months ago, she saw another wild rabbit and was barking non-stop and jumping around. It is extremely difficult to teach a fearful dog with fear aggression. You can't be too harsh and yet if you are not harsh they will not listen to you at all. I have given up using any treats. Everything is play, love, harsh verbal punishment, and very strong leash control (but no prong collar). Many working dogs are not food motivated, but play and love motivated.

She has huge reactivity with dogs, squirrels, etc. Very similar behavior to the dog in this video. She wants to get to the dogs to play. She pulls and jumps to try to get to animals a lot more than the dog in this video. We will try some of your tips but the biggest thing is getting her to focus on us which seems almost nearly impossible.

I do the steps but I feel like either my timing is off or my pressure or body language is wrong or something like that. The look is sharp! I thought I was on the wrong channel for a second, or that I was in the middle of an ad. The best part of this video was the owner handling her own dog - not just in the vacuum of a training space or her yard, but out in the wild.

Video quality is amazing. You could put this on Netflix or a cable network right now. But in the meantime I'm going to enjoy your content for free. :)

Wow This was an amazing video! Please continue creating content like this! I have a pitbull terrier mix and just the way Kaia reacted is how my dog Thor has been reacting. I am going to continue working on making sure the relationship with my dog improves. The break command is a very powerful reward command, and I was trying to figure out how to implemented in situations like this!.... Thank you Tom! you're the best!!!!!
