Beautiful dog, and great owner willing to work and learn. Tom, I am always in awe at your ability to communicate with both the owners and the dogs, getting results in a short period of time, and giving them enough confidence to continue to work at home. Great video once again, keep them coming!

This one was SOOO hard for me to watch. Atlas looks so so much like my intact male just barely 8 years old that I lost a couple months ago to a very aggressive cancer. I saw so many characteristics Atlas and Ruger shared. I'm on my end saying out loud POP POP encouraging his owner to pop the lead as he started to build. Rugers "tell" was that he'd start to shorten his stride just before you visually saw the build. If I could pop the lead on the second shortened stride it'd break the eye contact, the gears stopped turning and he'd look at me. Took awhile with a schutzhund trainer and me handling to spot that stride and know when to pop the lead but once I had that I could take him anywhere. Atlas and his owner are well on their way, you did what my trainer did, observed his small body language subtleties that once pointed out were so obvious to me where that shortened front stride wasn't before. Then life with Ruger was such a breeze. I miss that boy more than words can express, no matter how challenging he was. It was just how he wore it.

I also have a working line nudered German Shepherd that I rescued at the age of 2 years that was wild out of the gate. It took a lot of work to undo the damage that was done from the previous owner but I pushed threw every day working with him, and he is the best dog I have been blessed with. I truly believe we rescued each other. Always thank you for putting out these amazing videos.

Atlas came in carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, and he left part of a team that can help carry the load. What a great pair this owner and his dog make, with much better understanding between them. I hope they continue to make good progress so that Atlas’ owner can reach the goals for them that he has envisioned.

This is so satisfying to watch, I have a 10 month old female working line GSD and I had a similar sort of problem but it wasn’t reactivity she just wants to greet every person she see’s. Like most working line GSD’s high prey drive and using her ball exactly like this she in conjunction with an e collar has worked perfectly.
Also watching the videos where clueless owners with a dog they have no business owning always annoys, the guy in this video seems to be the opposite of that. Seems to me like he’s done everything right with his dog and has a great relationship and is a very good owner and good at training his dog. What this video I think shows really well is that you can be a good owner and know exactly what your doing but can still come up against issues that are a struggle to deal with. Always learning 😊

  • @LadyGeckoFoot

I love how you teach handlers that corrections are ok and that a dog is what it is. An intact dog is inherently going to be more territorial and dominant than a dog that is spayed or neutered. However, being intact doesn't make the dog a dominant jerk, but it can make it worse. Well done on teaching the owner that each dog has its own currency.

I find myself finding something useful and applicable in every single one of your videos. Thank you for showing and explaining so well the work that needs to be done to ensure a great relationship is had between the dog and owner. My dog was so reactive to people when we walked outside and now I know how to effectively ensure he is engaged with me and not focused on things that he may find fearful. I am still working with him on dog reactivity (he doesn’t seem to do well around other male dogs) but we are miles away from where we started. Thanks, Tom!

Hi Tom, Im from the Netherlands and watching your videos since I got a rescue Malinois 3 months ago. We call him Buck. His historie is he had 3 different owners in his 18 months of his life. He had dog training with his first owner but sadly way to agressiv and he didnt learn social skills at all. The second owner didnt know anything about these dogs so they spoiled him first and when Buck got to pushy they locked him in a crate day and night and he was rescued from this possition by the third owner/handler. These people just feel very sorry for Buck and didnt try to correct anything. We got him cause I have had dogs and like shepherds and a Malinois in my intere life and we have a horse farm with lots of room and next to a forest etc. Buck has been pulling like I've never seen before and he was all over the place all the time. His only social skills are humans and cats. He has a lot of respect for cats. He doesn't know what to do with other dogs but he is not agressive at all. All these things we can manege so far and he has come a long way already. We have two big issues. He is very agressive towards the horses and even tries to bite them. He goes crazy around them. When the horses are in the stalls he just runs up and down the aisl like crazy as well. If I need to put him inn my office/cantina by himself he goes crazy as well and is out of control trying to break through the door. If my husband or son are in the cantine he calms down. But they aren't always around. Im often allone at the barn. I'm training on the leash and need a prong collar to correct him. He has so much strenght developed in his neck on pulling the way he did before. Walking him now works very well. Buck is a very sweet dog and other than his issue with the horses and being allone he is coming along very well. I'm training him now by walking him in our arena with one of my horses loose around us. My horses are very correct towards me and I hope to teach him that he doesn't need to do anything with the horses. They are not his job. He needs to watch me and listen to me. Can you give me any advice?

I wish I lived closer to your facility. My reactive aussie needs help...I need help. His trip to the vet 2 wks ago traumatized him so bad my velcro dog wanted nothing to do with me for 8 days. I love my dog so much and his aggression isn't his fault. It started when a teen on a skateboard jumped the curb to grind and was inches from me. My dog jumped into protection mode and has been this way since. It's breaking my heart and so unfair to him. 😢

Hi Tom, thanks so much for all your incredible videos.
I'm 15 years old and a fellow dog trainer in Western Australia. Thanks so much for your videos, shows and more. I've learnt heaps. Although I don't have a business, I help a lot of people with their reactive, aggressive and fearful dogs. I have an issue with my own dog though, which I would like your advice on.
He is a 2 year old intact male golden retriever, named Lucky. Lucky is an awesome dog I can take anywhere in public, and trust him off leash. I got him at 15 months, when he was like a wild bucking horse, but quickly, using dog psychology, particularly the walk, got him to where he is now. He's like a different dog now from when we got him.
The issue is though, that me and my family live on 2 and a half acres and have farm animals. He is fine with the adult goats and other dogs, but tried to kill any baby goat, rabbit or guinea pig. If he was aggressive towards them, I could deal with that the way I dealt with aggression to small dogs, but he believes that they are food, and should be killed to eat. This is pretty much the only thing I don't know how to do with dogs. It's very annoying and also sad, as it's also causing a lot of division in the family, and I have to always keep the animals and Lucky separate. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance :)

Great video! I am sure the tips in this will be helpful with my intact male rottweiler mix. Loved seeing your humor come out more in this one.
Realized recently I need to be even more on top of things and structured with him than I normally am because he has a similar personality. Great obedience but still reactive severely. Checking names and kicking ass as you said. And the prong can set him off cause he is still super sensitive. We had a great walk friday passing many dogs with minimal excitment though.
And he is so intune with my energy it's crazy. I couldn't figure out why he was suddenly alert/gaurding with everyone at work and suddenly I made the connection I was dealing with a super stressful issue with an important payment messing up. Even though (I thought) I was acting the same he must have picked up my energy and gone in to guard mode. I was worried even more he'd get in trouble for being disruptive and wouldn't be allowed back cause I work in a school. He was barking (in his crazy loud deep voice) at students popping in rather than his usual softer alert followed by asking permission to say hi. He adores people luckily!
What's helping his frustration and explosiveness on the prong is just to wear it slightly lower with an extra link. I still have control, he's not annoyed like on a head halter, and walks are going better it seems.

great video Tom. My shepherd is a two and half intact show dog that is not shown....lol. he's wonderful in the house, mostly calm and easy going. when i leave or when someone comes to the house he gets excited. Not mean, he just wants to go with me or wants to see them. problem is, he's big and he jumps. He runs up and down the fence line when i go to leave or when i use my tractor. not sure how to handle that one. I need an assistant on that one i think. thanks again for sharing your videos, techniques and insight. always look forward to watching them.

This owner is awesome, not saying most owners don’t care about their dogs but I think you can tell this guy truly LOVES his. As the owner of a once reactive rescue dog I can tell you it’s extremely challenging and draining, there is almost no part of your life that isn’t made more difficult because your dog struggles in public or with strangers. Proper training and consistent work are important but I would argue that more than anything, dogs like this need love to succeed. There are going to be good days and bad days, moments where you’re encouraged by their progress and others where you feel like you’re back at square one after they act out. You have to love them through It all the best you can, it’s a weird thing to say but I truly believe they know when you believe in them and when you don’t.

He/you made amazing progress with this dog. I wish people knew better how to play with their dogs. I do agility with border collies, and one of my early coaches used to tell us all to be dynamic in your play. It makes such a world of difference. You could see the difference when the owner was a little more dynamic with the dog how much better the dog reacted to both him and his surroundings. Now granted, not every dog will be into the tugging game, but probably most would be if introduced to it properly. Also, when Tom walked the dog, the dog got tons of verbal feedback, which is awesome. Just my two cents.

I have a cattle dog that is obsessed with the ball but when i use it when there is a dog it excites her too much and if i don’t give it to her fast enough she redirects and nips me. How do i prevent her from nipping me but still use the ball to get her frustration out and distract her from her triggers (dogs, runners, bikes, etc)

I wish I could get your help with my shepherd. He has drug me across the yard, pulled me to where I’ve fallen in bushes, or just yanked me in mud and caused me to faceplant in the mud. He’s so reactive to everything. I know he’s like this partly because he tried to protect me from my abusive ex. I just hate that I can’t take him out to potty without making sure no human or animal is outside nearby.

We have a Dutch Shepherd who is 2 years old and very smart. He’s a great dog but he’s so reactive we cannot have friends over or take him with us anywhere. This is especially concerning because we like to travel and go RVing. He has even bitten a neighbor and our daughter. I’m so afraid he will do it again. We love him, but don’t know what to do with him, Can you help us?

I'm no expert but IMO Atlas has the attention, focus and drive that dogs Haz at ShieldK9 work with. With the right work Atlas looks like he could be an exceptional dog.

How long have you been training dogs? Next time I want a fearful dog to blow up in fear and get reinforced I might get you to stare at it. Nice decoy skills.

    Hello Thomas
Can you do a video on this issue?
We have a yorkie . 5 years old. Male.
In the morning my wife walks the dog.
If I am in bed in the bedroom, my wife will come in the bedroom and tell me she’s going to work .
As she gives me a hug the dog starts barking very loud and sort of jumps toward her.
    She is his primary caregiver.
We both walk him , feed him etc.
what is the dog trying to tell us??
    Thank you
    D-Wane
    She will

Sometimes you don’t need to overdrive the Ferrari you just need a gentle course correction at the right time.

What a great job. Basically, this dog needs to be handled like you handle Loki. He's not a pet. How much would neutering affect his behavior? Would it be the 'kinder' thing for him especially if they were not going to breed him?

Do you teach to pet the dog when they look at you?

Is some of this because he is intact?
