You’re the first person I’ve ever heard talk about The Song of the Lioness and I was SOOOO nervous. Glad you love them. I would leave the Beka Cooper series til last (it’s great but no Alanna). I’d go straight into Wild Magic.

The Song of Lioness has been and forever will be a whole big ass part of my personally. I read them when I was 11 and have reread them every year since (37 now 😬). They’re just so good, and they really hold up so well. Tamora Pierce paved the way for so many fantasy authors and strong FMC’s. I’d love a video just about this series. Also, read in publication order!

Yes to all of this! Pierce's books are still on my shelves for over 20 years now and some of her characters have helped form my life view. (They are all amazing, but Kel is probably my favorite) ( and totally agree on publication order)

I love seeing your joy about the Alanna series! It’s one of my childhood favorites. ❤ I would recommend reading the Wild Mage series next! Daine is very different from Alanna but just as easy to fall in love with.

You absolutely should read the Tortall books in publication order!
    1) You'll get to see Alanna as a side character in the next 2 series (The Immortals, then the Protector of the Small). I have not read the Trickster's Duet yet, which comes next, but I imagine she'll be there too.
    2) The Beka Cooper trilogy (the prequel one) truly takes place 100s of years before, and might make it harder to keep track of the changing politics of the "current" time. Though it is great! All the books are named after dogs :)
One warning tho: Tamora makes 1 bad decision about the main romance in the Immortals, though it only happens in the 4th book.

The Trickster Deut is set a few years after protector of the small series and is connected to Alanna's family

Tamora Pierce’s books were my entire childhood and what introduced me to fantasy. Echo what others have said, publication order is a must as characters from the different quartets will appear and it builds on each other.
So jealous you get to have this experience for the first time

Yesss, would love all of your Alanna thoughts! Publication order is the way to go with the Tortall books, which puts Wild Magic next, although Kel (Protector of the Small Quartet) is my personal favorite.

Ok so yes we all need a Tortall themed video. Definitely read the immortals next starting with Wild Magic.

Even better complications for fun reading of Travis Baldree’s stories : Bookshops & Bonedust minus the epilogue, THEN Pages to Fill (which is generally at the end of most L&L editions), THEN then Legends & Lattes, THEN then then epilogue of B&B. Hehehe, just sayin. Wish I could read them again for the first time in that order. Love love love your channel. So glad to find you. 😊

Nononono first reads of Tortall should be in publishing order. PLEASE go to Wild Magic next.
Literally the Tammy Pierce fandom is diehard we are ALL HERE FOR THIS.

I'm glad the Alanna books finally got a facelift with beautiful new covers. No disrespect to any artists/designers out there, but the old covers made the books like dry and old-fashioned. But they read like something that could have been written today. So glad you've enjoyed them.
Also when you said the Jekua series is like Ash Ketchum and Yuna going on an adventure I had clicked purchase before you even finished that section. I'm in.

I'm currently reading Bookshops and Bonedust and loving it. I think cozy prequels work much better because they are low stakes, there is never a risk the MC dies, so the existence of the 'sequel' isn't a spoiler.
I'm so glad you loved Alanna! Tamora Pierce is one of my favourite authors. I did a reread of the entire Tortall universe earlier this year in chronological order, but for first time I'd recommend publication order (so next is Daine - pronounced Dane, not Di-ane like my brain read it at first - in the Immortals quartet). My favourite is Keladry in Protector of the Small though.
When you do read Beka Cooper's trilogy, be warned that the writing style is first person diary style. A big shift from the other books, but I loved it.
Next year I plan to reread the Emelan books.

Love your how to read Bookshops and Bonedust and Legends and Lattes hack! 😅😅 it’s so odd to me that the epilogue in the prequel would be a flash forward to after the next book. I would have expected it to just be something from the time between the books maybe

I absolutely love Tamora Pierce!! My friend got me into her books in 7th grade. My favorite series in The Tortall Universe is the Tricksters duology books. Though if you are planning on reading The Tortall Universe books in series order, it will be awhile before you get there.

there's a 2 part miniseries of Hogfather! my former partner's family watched it every year. i agree with you on the confusion, but the bits about belief, particularly humans using little lies to work up to big important ones like justice, mercy, etc. have really stuck with me. it's not frivolous to imagine the world as better than it is.

I need all the Alanna thoughts. I usually read them I chronological order which would mean going to the Terrier books starring Beka Cooper. But since you're reading for the first time I would say read them in publication order which means that you want the Immortals series which stars Daine. The first book of those is Wild Magic.

I just discovered you have a UA-cam too! I didn't discover the Tortall books until I was in college and loved them. I still love them and am now trying to figure out how to fit a reread of them and a Tolkien reread in with the never ending tbr. 😂

Not that you need another voice but PLEASE do an Alanna video, and yes The Immortals next (Wild Magic, Wolf Speaker, Emperor Mage, Realm of the Gods). The Beka Cooper books that you were thinking of _are_ great but The Immortals and then Protector of the Small follow on naturally from each other in a single timeline so I think you would appreciate that experience more the first time.

I grew up on Tortall books! I totally agree on the pre-queer vibes there. I ate them up as a kid. Read the rest if you get the chance, they are also delightful!

Omg yes! I grew up reading all of Tamora Pierce’s books and honestly they hold up. I don’t love the Beka Cooper books as much or the Protector of the Small (they’re still good but not my favorites). Definitely read the wild magic books and honestly, they’re set in a different world, but the circle books and their sequels are sooo good.
Anyway you are amazing and I truly love your videos!

    @narflet 8 місяців тому

YES. Please do a full video on Alanna. You go to Daine next (Immortals) then Kel (Protector of the Small) and you'll get more of her story but also so much more. Publication order is what you want (for a first read, anyway 😉). I loved your passion just in this video (one of us!) so I totally want more! We (the Tammy fans) view Alanna as queer because word of god has confirmed that she is gender queer/non-binary but Tammy didn't have the language to write her as such in the 80s. She's such a truly lovely person as well as a lovely author and her fan community is the best. ❤

Tamora Pierce finally got to do proper queer rep for the first time in her Circle of Magic series. It sounds like her editors/ publishers pushed back on a lot of things she wanted to write. Alana was supposed to be one book originally and a lot got cut out thanks to editorial pressure.

in november i read a little novella called the only harmless great thing by brooke bolander - it takes two early 1900s historical events, the radium girls and the electrocution of an elephant on coney island, and combines them in an alt-history/sci-fi extremely feminist story. one of the strangest but most affecting things i've ever read!

I've been meaning to read Tamora Pierce for so long. This has convinced me to get it done.
Random question for you that I've had for the so so long. Where did you get your bookcase? Is it Ikea? I will cry if it's Ikea... we don't have one where I live.
I've missed watching your videos. I credit you with getting me to read for fun again. ❤ I've always loved reading and collecting books, but felt like I didn't have time. Now I just make myself read before bed. 😂
