Mercedes certainly did the best presentation and explanation. It was a cinematic experience where Audi looked like a powerpoint presentation and BMW looked like a cartoon with corny James Bond type background music. I was expecting to see a South Park character behind the wheel. I do give BMW props for retaining the iconic lighting signature of the headlights. Audi came in second on that note. In my opinion the best overall was the Mercedes even though the headlamp design was a totally new one. The next question is the life expectancy of the LED, cost to repair when the warranty runs out and when this car is 10 years old on a used car lot would it be worth buying?? One headlight could potentially exceed the value of the car. I still put my money on Mercedes and I am an Audi owner.

Interesting! All three have such different ways of doing the same thing. I really like Audi's implementation. No moving parts and better light output/coverage. Although all three are great and can't wait for the tech trickling down to cars I can afford. ;)
Audi has most moving parts for the reflector movement.
@@bomiao1984 Exactly what do you mean by moving parts? The reflectors literally don't need to move. BMW is the one that physically moves whereas both Audi and Mercedes are static and the LED's are the ones that just simply turn on and off. BMW's implementation is the poorest because it can only move to one moving object and cannot individually dim zones.
BMW is the only one here that actually shows real footage on the streets. Audi and Mercedes only show 3D-animated graphics to prove their superiority in light-systems. That fact alone speaks for itself.

the sign at 6 mins leads to my home town (Lippstadt) this is the place where Hella has settled itself (the leading car light producer in the world). It makes me a little bit proud to see that they still connect to their hometown :)
The funny thing is: almost all the lights (at least the high end ones) of AUDI, BMW, Mercedes or Porsche are developed and manufactured by the same company from Germany.

I have a AMG E43 with the multi beam LED and its awesome. one thing to note is that most of these systems are coded not to work in the US because of regulations. I had to get them coded to start using as they were intended.

During the last 2 years i've driven several cars with all of those "Selective-Highbeam-Systems". In my opinion the best one is Audi Matrix LED (in the new A4, the A8/A6 Versions are between Mercedes and Opel), then Mercedes, then Opel/ Vauxhall and the worst one is BMW's (and i can say that because an F31 LCI is my daily driver). BMW's system doesn't work as smooth as all the other systems do and sometimes it grades you down to the lowbeam, when the other Systems still would light the road. But that's a technical issue. BMW does not use several LEDs but 1 LED with several lenses. And thats the problem. 2014 you could do this, in 2017 you have to come up with something better.
You do realize, that the F31 is a design from 2011? The LED-headlight-design of your F31 is from 2015. Of course it is the oldest system and therefore actually should be the worst system (when compared to the all new A4 and the all new Opel Insignia).
It's in the bloody video - BMW laser light technology. Seems feature wise it's more advanced then the other 2.

honestly if you say BMW thats probably because you love BMW or just own one. its obviously primitive compared to Merc and Audi. Merc and Audi seem to use the same system, but somehow Audi has theirs more effective. Merc used to rule but now Audi has the stage, I mean even on the road Audi cars are ripping the mercs apart.
You're right, but this video should have contained BMW Laser lights, since the others showcased the best offerings from Audi and Merc.
No some of us will say BMW because it is the truth here! Benz and Audi had the best representations than BMW with very good 3d edit and other necessary video stuff. Whereby BMW started with showing the old type of headlight tech and with the new laser light which was obviously live representation and would've been better if it was like the other two videos rather than live recording
otherhand BMW like the only one has the video from real condition from the road. And it works perfectly.

Wow. Seems like Audi/MB are in a totally different league compared to BMW. BMW uses motors to move the headlights rather than adaptive arrays. Seems like they were really caught off guard here and this was their temporary solution.

Honestly I thought the headlights in my 2016 DS3 w/LEDs were brighter than my current 2016 BMW 4 series w/LEDs. Noticed that first time I got my BM.
I'd say BMW is over shadowed with the old mechanical tech (even my 2004 Golf mk5 has a vertical auto levelling based on the same mechanics) and Audi and Merc are pretty much on the same level but on an ergonomic stand point the Audi's better because each cluster of LEDs is mounted on an individual electronic board with two screws (watch 7:42) and has it's own chip so you can replace a single board if a LED goes wrong but if it happens in the Merc you're flucked XD and it still has a mechanical part which will go wrong eventualy (talking from experience), lastly, let's not even talk about the price because the Merc make Audi's parts look cheap LOL
abd bach don't forget MB used 84 LED lamp on each side but Audi 25 led lamps . MB also has advantage of anti glare system that is practically very smart while driving on the rain.
@Comments: Yeah. At least, Mercedes says so.. The W213 E-Class glares at oncoming traffic quite a lot. Way more than the Audi matrix-LED-systems.
i am no expert, but i have a BMW with this tech. It is quite amazing. Also what is important is, how it helps you not to think, oh, ok, now i need to switch to low lights. Then again high lights, then low lights. You just drive. Simple.
@@retrogamesmaniac I agree. I recently bought a 530D F10 with this option and it's great, but objectively, Audi and Mercs matrix systems allow for more coverage of the road without blinding other road users. My Bmw sometimes dims the whole left side area when oncoming traffic gets close enough.

I have seen all versions of the tree different manufacturers in real Traffic multiple Times. The Audi and the BMW versions work very well at my opinion. But the Mercedes Version is blinding me Almosen every Time.

Why doesn't my x6 2013 have this lighting effect? Mine is also the original car adaptive led, and only the automatic far and near lights are turned on when the adaptive mode is turned on.
The Matrix LED trumps it up
All above technologies of different car companies seems work on same principles and giving same results which is good for people. On the contrary sad thing is they are available at very high cost. Common people can't afford such a high cost of vehicle. These should made available at a moderate costing.

AUDI. Their newest vehicles even have dynamic turn signals. I have a 2018 Audi and the full LED and dynamic turn signals look really cool and unique on the road! I'm not biased as I've owned a 2015 Mercedes and several of my friends drive BMWs and their headlights are recognizable and iconic. But right now, Audi just has better exterior lighting.

You're wrong there Doc. The BMW Adaptive LED on the F series use motorized servos that move the lenses mechanically. Maybe do a little research before making statements like that.
I'd say the one from Mercedes is the best.
All of those headlights (except the BMW auto switch from high beams to low beams) are illegal in US thanks to government laws from 1968

Let me add this comment as well. I am in the US and this technology is battling with our local laws to be allowed here. I see all kinds of potential in the technology and hope our beuarocrats get off their ass and see it as well. Just the performance in bad weather conditions and safety to other drivers would be fantastic. I live in a very wet and rainy climate and the roads take on the look of glass at night making the markings difficult to see compounded by oncoming drivers with high beams on or incorrectly adusted lamps.

Those systems only make sense if they also don't glare truck drivers. For example: Most of the systems detect the lights or the reflections of traffic, roadsigns etc. On a german highway you can normally drive with high beam and you'll not glare any car drivers, because the crash barrier will block the line of sight. It's not because any of the systems detect a situation to switch to low beam (or only because you're lucky and a traffic sign is near). A truck driver sits much higher and still sees the high beam and gets glared by it. When they flash somebody with their headlights, the system recognizes it, switches to low beam and right away to high beam, so they can decide to glare the oncoming traffic or to get glared by it. And such systems are really a pain in the ass for those truckers. And 'til there is no solution to prevent those guys from the side effects, none of those systems is really complete.

All brilliant but Audi win this battle from my experience
The Mercedes System is the highest developed one. You dont even see the LED parts anymore by full light. The Audi seystem is also advanced with its functions but you still notice every part of the system in the headlight design. The system of BMW is a little bit retarded because the light still needs to move physically to both sides and in some situtations the light is turned of and on again so you don't have the brightest view.
But it's no wonder because the E-Class is the newest car and the 7er isn't the latest one.
