I've watched this show from the beginning 1979- I still watch today. I was so hooked on Mr. Kuralt voice and how he delivered the news. What a great man and good spirit as well. Rest Mr. Kuralt - RIP.
One of the greatest shows of all time. Charles taught me to love everything about our world and everything about life. Hearing that trumpet made me cry. Thanks UA-cam for being a time machine.
CBS Sunday Morning holds a special place in my heart because my parents would watch this show every morning before church. Every time I hear that trumpet song, I can still smell pancakes, bacon and coffee being cooked and I can still feel my church necktie choking me. Sweet memories
I am very happy that the 1979 debut was uploaded onto UA-cam. I was at first worried that something was very wrong with either my tv, or that somehow I was thinking, it was the wrong day of the week; Laughing to myself. I have gotten so used to watching the Sunday Morning show throughout my life, that it has become my weekly habit. So even though, I am happy to find the Sunday Morning show on UA-cam, it saddens me to think, that I might be part of the last generation to really enjoy and appreciate a good intelligent news show, that does not only focus on entertainment news.
“Here’s something new…and it starts right now.” Wonderful stories and introductions to beautiful places and fascinating people. Charles Kuralt is so missed…one of the best storytellers that ever lived.
8 months 19 days later, on october 16, 1979, we came to america and always love watching sunday morning, until i joined the us navy on July 13, 1987... until July 1, 1992. love this show, my top ten!
Mr. Kuralt was a one-of-a-kind journalist. In many ways, he was made for this show. Or, maybe, the CBS brass made this show for him 😊. Despite busy Sunday mornings for me, I always watched when I could. Thanks for posting this memory.
Fond memories of this when I was a kid, I loved watching this with my parents every Sunday. Then a great Roast Beef diner later that day. My Mom was the Best Cook Ever! The good old days, life was so much simpler then. Best part I knew I had it good and enjoyed every moment.
I went digging around on youtube to try to figure out the instrument because I couldnt from memory, and thought it was some obscure regal horn but then hearing was like...wait is that trumpet...
Nothing against Wynton's version, but I prefer the original 1979 version without the extra flourishes at the end (as well as the slower pace and less political nature of the whole show.)
All I can think about is My Grandma and Ma getting me ready for the church and me closing my eyes and hearing the intro for the first time! I would further fall in love with music! Peace!
0:26- "Good Morning! Here begins something new." You're right Charles Kuralt- it's a new kind of beginning- a beginning where one is proud to listen to what is happening or what is expected to come in the week ahead.
My dad used to watch this show every single Sunday morning when I was a little kid (I was born in 77). He still watches it. I watch it now too. Great show, I hope it lasts forever.
My father does the same, too, when we're getting ready for Church- in which our mass starts and hour from when the show's done for that Sunday- 9:30am.
I understood him pretty well, despite some grammatical mistakes, technically speaking. We could all point out the mistakes of others, and surely, that would make this world better, right? Some try to rise above such pettiness, others do not. I guess you must feel a great sense of accomplishment for your insightful little comment here.
Thank you so much for posting. As a child, I used to watch this every Sunday morning with my Dad. Amazing how rewatching this truly took me back to my childhood. Thanks again.
Back then, my dad used to make sure my older sister and I got up on Sunday mornings to eat breakfast and then get ready to go to Sunday School and then church. We had this NuTone intercom system and he would turn it on just before Sunday Morning came on with that trumpet. We had to sit apart during church because she would get me to laugh and my dad and mom would have me sit on the end of the pew away from my older sister :) lol
Osgood carried the torch of Kuralt through the years very well. Very very well. I fear for the future of Sunday Morning since it will no longer have any objectivtive journalism.
If only the show would stay as it has been for decades: this calm, nice, smiley face, warm fuzzy, family show. Recent episodes have, in one case, spent the whole show on personal finance. Not my idea of a way to chill on Sunday morning. Last week, the show opened with a story about prostitution in America. Not a good family morning around the pancakes sort of sunday morning entertainment. I really hope they fix it. This is starting to suck. Hard.
I think Jane Pauley is great as the host, but you really don’t see much of her talking like how Charles Kuralt is doing here. She pretty much just seems to introduce the next story and that’s it.
I remember watching this show when I was a kid in 1982 when I was 7. I never understood what the news was talking about and what was going on in the world, but I was mesmerized by this show as a kid, and watched it all the time on Sundays with my dad.
My favorite news anchor as a kid from CBS. I watched this guy every Sunday. His speaking style was perfect. Also liked brothers Robert and Peter Jennings during the weekday evenings. Also the long running host of Good Morning America on weekday mornings. Back when news was interesting and worth watching. But nobody beat Charles on Sunday he was great.
[4] Although it is popular (even for me) to say that the decade begins in a year ending in 0 and ends in a year ending in 9, technically, the 1970's began on January 1, 1971 and ended on December 31, 1980. The 1980's then began on January 1, 1981.

I know exactly what you mean because I swear I watched this as a little kid premiering in the late 60s and I guess I must have it confused with Charles kuralt ON THE ROAD .. but I really do find it hard to believe this premiered in 1979 because you're right.. it seems that was much earlier than that .
Because, initially, Sunday Morning was part of a CBS News project that started in 1979 where Charles Kuralt would be on the 90-min. This is the theme to Sunday Morning, composed by Johann Gottfried and called “Abblasen”. This music has been used on CBS News Sunday Morning for many years, but only since 1998 have they been using this version performed by Doc Severinsen, the former Tonight Show bandleader. Since 2004 they have been using a version of Abblasen by Wynton Marsalis. CBS Sunday Morning is anchored by Charles Osgood and focuses on the day’s news as well as on arts and entertainment. Being a successful morning program, CBS News executives attempted in the early 80’s to transfer the Sunday morning format to weekdays with anchors Charles Kuralt and Diane Sawyer. So this theme was also used on the weekday morning show for a short period of time
